[Royal Treats]: "Happy" Potatoes!

I'm not a chef or anything, but I do enjoy cooking and baking. Even when my experiments do not always work out.

I thought I'd share a few of the better experiments with everyone.

Today I'm sharing a family favorite. Here in UT, this dish is fondly known as "Funeral Potatoes", as this dish is almost always at any funeral or church gathering. But I find that name just too depressing, so I've renamed them, and in my house they're known instead as "Happy" Potatoes.

Be warned--this is NOT a healthy dish. It's comfort food, plain and simple. If you want to make it lighter, go ahead. But I'll continue to live on the edge and enjoy it with all the fat and calories. After all, I don't make it too often. But when I do? There is no such thing as leftover "Happy" Potatoes. :)

Why?

Cover first: *melts* If you are not affected by this one, you must have something wrong with you! :) The pose . . . the looks . . . the flat-out sexiness of it! Oh my.  I want to trade places with the heroine. Desperately.

Now, as to the book... I picked up the first novella by this author earlier this week (psst--it's free on NOOK and Kindle!), and I absolutely fell in love with the writing, the characters, everything. I quickly picked up book 1 and devoured it in a day, LOVED it as well. Book 2 was also devoured and loved. Now I'm anxiously awaiting Sebastian's book. I may have also bribed Marquita for an eARC of it next year. Maybe... :D

If you haven't tried this author yet, do it now! Sexy, sweet and funny, this series is a perfect choice for a weekend of reading!

Kiss of the Betrayer by Boone Brux
Excerpt

Now that Jade had tried to kill Luc, doubts plagued her. She’d never stopped to consider what it meant to take another person’s life, never thought about the cost to her own soul. It had always been: It had to be done. Luc had to pay for his betrayal.

Rell thirsted for vengeance. With each cruel deed she seemed bent on performing, Jade volunteered in her place, hoping to slow her sister’s descent into the world of the Bane. For so long she’d fought to keep Rell rooted to humanity, but never once noticed her own slipping away.

A twig snapped, jolting Jade from her thoughts. She crouched and searched the forest. Nothing moved in the murky grayness. A shiver ran across her skin, the woods’ coolness suddenly feeling a lot less welcoming. Maybe the follower was Rell, or a deer. Jade didn’t dare call out in case someone or something else stalked her. Other creatures lurked in the forest, none of which she wished to encounter. She cursed herself for not keeping the knife she had used to stab Luc. Now her inability to stomach its feel seemed idiotic.

Another twig snapped. She spun and ran in the opposite direction. Footsteps thundered after her, closing fast. She broke through the trees and was halfway across the clearing when someone hit her full force, taking her to the ground. The breath burst from her body from the weight of the person landing on top of her. It took only a second to realize who the attacker was.

Luc.

[ARC Review]: "One Good Earl Deserves a Lover"

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean
Publisher: Avon (January 29, 2013)
Series: The Rules of Scoundrels, 2
Genre: Historical Romance

The second in the incredible new Rules of Scoundrels series from New York Times bestselling author Sarah MacLean. Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she's never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London's most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.

Like any good scientist, Pippa's done her research and Cross's reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion - the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it's more than tempting . . . and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts - and giving the lady precisely what she wants.

My Review:

I'll be honest--for the first, oh, 80 pages or so I was a bit unsure about this one. It just...wasn't grabbing (and holding) my attention. Why? I'm not quite sure, perhaps it was just my mood at the time. Perhaps it was the story. It's hard to say.

But I stuck with it anyway, as I was a little curious about how their HEA would turn out. Pippa was a bluestocking of the worst degree, and while I liked that, I also was annoyed by some of the "scientific" things she would suddenly say. They just...didn't really match her, or at least not the way she was being described. I knew she was smart, great, got that, but her word choices just sounded so awkward. 'Course, perhaps they were meant to be that way, and I'm just easily annoyed. :)

But, since Jasper seemed to fall for it, I eventually learned to accept her.

It took every ounce of his strength to keep from leaping over the table, lifting her in his arms, pressing her back against the wall, and ravishing her. He opened his mouth to speak, not knowing what would come, but knowing without a doubt, that if she said one more perfectly reasonable, rational, insane thing, he would not be able to resist her.

And Cross...oh, I loved his temptation lessons for Pippa.

"Temptation . . . " He hesitated, and she found herself leaning forward, eager for this curious, unsettling lesson. "Temptation turns you. It makes you into something you never dreamed, it presses you to give up everything you ever loved, it calls you to sell your soul for one, fleeting moment."

The words were low and dark and full of truth, and they hovered in the silence for a long moment, an undeniable invitation. He was close, protecting her from toppling off the block, the heat of him wrapping around her despite the cold. "It makes you ache," he whispered, and she watched the curve of his lips in the darkness. "You'll make any promise, swear any oath. For one . . . perfect . . . unsoiled taste."

But the thing that finally pulled me in completely was the interaction between Pippa and Cross. As she tried her hardest to be ruined (before her marriage to another man, I might add) I found myself smirking more than a few times, and perhaps even sighing once or twice as well. The tension and chemistry between them quickly built up, and I loved every moment of it!

"You have no idea what I could do to you, Philippa Marbury. The ways I could touch you. The wonders I could show you. I could ruin you without a thought, sink with you to the depths of sin and not once regret it. I could lead you right into temptation and never look back."

The words stole her breath. She wanted it. Every bit of it. She opened her mouh, to tell him so, but no sound would come.

"You see? I've shocked you."

She shook her head. "I have shocked myself." His gaze turned curious, and she added. "Because I find that I would like to experience those things."

Plus, who doesn't love to watch the hero, literally, fall to his knees for the heroine?

By the way, I want a hero who does this when he sees me undress!

His breath caught at the sensation and he froze, knowing with the keen understanding of one who had fallen before that this moment would be his destruction.

Knowing he shouldn't look up.

Knowing he couldn't stop himself.

She was clad in nothing but a corset pantallets and stockings, arms crossed over her chest, cheeks flaming-- the rest wash an irresistible promise.

He fell to his knees.

Of course she realizes that she won't marry Castleton after all. Love always wins. :)

"He might have kissed you, love, but his kiss is nothing like mine, is it?"

She shook her head, her reply coming on heavy gasps of breath. "No." He rewarded her honesty with a long lick along the curl of her ear, pulling the soft lobe of it in his teeth, worrying it until she sighed, "Cross."

[......]

"His kiss doesn't make you cry his name."

"No," she said, pressing her breast into his hand, asking for more.

[.....]

"Tell me, my gorgeous, honest girl, does his kiss make you want to lift your skirts and take your pleasure here? now?"

"No," she confessed, soft and strained.

And this . . . I can't forget this:

She looked down at him, blue eyes fairly glowing with desire. "I want you to want me."

He closed his eyes at that; trust Pippa to be forthright even here, even now, even as she bared herself to his eyes and mouth and hands. Trust her to strip this moment of all remaining shrouds, leaving it raw and bare and honest.

God help him, he told her the truth. He wasn't certain he would do anything but. "I do, love. I want you more than you could ever know. More than I could have ever dreamed. I want you enough for two men. For ten."

She laughed at that, the sound coming on a wicked movement of strong hips and soft stomach. "I don't require ten. Just you."

Favorite Quote:

Here Jasper (Cross) is referring to "doing it wrong" during intimacy.

He couldn't stop himself from saying, softly, "Pippa."

Her gaze locked instantly with his. "Yes?"

"If he hurts you . . . " He paused, hating the way her eyes went wide at the words.

"Yes?"

If he hurts you, leave him.

If he hurts you, I'll kill him.

"If he hurts you . . . he's doing it wrong." It was all he could say. He released her hand. "Roll again."

Later, Pippa uses his words against him, but this time in regards to how he's been treating her heart.

She looked down at her lap, hands twisted in the white linen of her nightgown and whispered. "You once told me that if Castleton hurt me, he wasn't going it right."

He stilled. "Yes."

She met his eyes. "You're not going it right."

4 STARS! A few bumps along the way, some slow parts, but overall I loved it, great chemistry between Cross and Pippa. If you love historical romances, Sarah MacLean is definitely the  author to try. I've only read two of her books so far, but I've enjoyed both, and I plan on reading more!

Blog Tour Promo: "The Stone Guardian"

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, THERESA! :)

A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa started her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and features articles to delve into the whimsical world of young adult paranormal romance.

Since then, Theresa has gotten married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and was repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having stepped foot on the soil of over a dozen countries, traveled to sixteen U.S. states—including an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, she will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

The Stone Guardian by Theresa McClinton
Excerpt

“Where are we going?” Ashley asked, walking a few steps behind. Arwan slowed his pace for her much shorter stride. She wasn’t used to hiking in the jungle, but she didn’t want to show it. He found that a cute addition to the many things he admired about her.

Without offering an explanation, he grabbed a stick from the ground. If he told her where he was taking her, it would ruin the surprise. He just hoped the creatures hadn’t taken shelter somewhere else because of the heavy rains.

Soon they arrived at a clearing where hundreds of tall, thin bushes with elegant purple blooms covered the ground. Mature trees formed a canopy overhead, while gaps in the branches allowed the sun to speckle the jungle floor with light.

“I thought you would like it here.” He watched for her reaction.

She inspected the space. “It’s neat.”

Of course, she didn’t know why they were really there. He watched her shift her weight. Did she lie when she said he didn’t make her uncomfortable? It seemed like he did. Every time he smiled at her, her cheeks flushed or her muscles tensed.

Arwan gently took her hand. She allowed him to, without hesitation. It was the first time.

Carefully, he guided her through the maze of shrubs. When they reached the center, he stood in front of her and put his lips close to her ear. “Can I hold you?” She took a small step back. He waited for her to decide and, at the slightest nod, took her hand. “I just want to show you something.”

He slid his hand gently around her waist and drew her close. Her chest jumped when they pressed together. He savored the feeling of her drumming heartbeat. In fact, he could almost hear it.

She rested her hands against his chest, and he wondered if she felt his heart drumming too. “You’re blushing.”

She pressed the backs of her hands on her face. “I am?”

He caressed the silky curve of her cheek. “You’re lovely when you blush.” The stick secure in his hand, he extended it to the side. “Watch.” With a powerful strike, he whacked a nearby bush on its base. Dozens of butterflies launched into the air.

The flight of few caused a chain reaction, and soon they blanketed the sky. Several landed in her hair and on her arms while more flew overhead.

Arwan tilted his head back to the sky. Ashley gasped and stared at the countless array of colors gliding overhead. A butterfly rested on his shoulder, pumping its cobalt blue wings. She gently blew on it, her warm breath caressing his neck.

His chest swelled with longing. He clenched his jaw. Watching her lips form into a soft circle, she continued to blow on its colorful wings. He had never wanted someone so fiercely. She brought something out of him he couldn’t control. Something instinctual, animalistic. He watched her lips, longing to kiss her. To feel her mouth pressed against his. The need surged in his chest and spread throughout his limbs. He tensed and pulled her closer.

He knew he had to be gentle. As much as he tried to conceal the need, it threatened to destroy him if he didn’t at least try. Slowly, he leaned in to kiss her. His lips hovered above hers. Her hot breath broke over his mouth.

Ashley gasped and stepped back. Her teary eyes forced him to look away. He silently cursed himself. He’d pushed her too far.

“I…” The hurt in her voice surprised him. “I can’t. I’m sorry.”

Before he could respond, Ashley ran back toward the house, leaving him alone in the clearing.

He watched her stumble through the trees until she was gone. The jungle was quiet, except for the sound of chirping birds and the rustling of lemurs in the trees.

He turned, balling his fists. What the hell was he thinking? He’d known that if he tried to kiss her, it would push her away. He should have shown more restraint.

Each of his steps pounded against the jungle floor. The birds’ chirps ceased, and the lemurs took quiet refuge in the branches. When he escaped the maze of bushes, he charged his fist into the trunk of a mature tree, spitting layers of bark and redwood in every direction.

My (Mini) Review:

A sweet, quick story of second chances. Who can resist such a tale? :)

He's already broke her heart and left her once. Can he convince her it was a stupid mistake? Will she see that with Chetwyn there is passion--and love---and with Litton there is only cold duty and being wanted for her dowry?

Favorite Quotes:

This---sigh...

“I won’t give up,” he said. “Not until Christmas.”

“Why that particular day?”

“Because your love is the only gift I wish to receive.”

And this one just shows you the wit in the story as well. :)

“…Please return to the manor, Chetwyn. I’m out here alone because I need solitude.”

“Are you rethinking your plans to marry Litton?”

“I’m rethinking my decision to not knock my skates against your thick skull.”

He couldn’t help but smile. “At least you are thinking of me.”

“Good God, but you are vexing,” she stated before tromping off.

3.5 STARS! A perfect Christmas novella, one that will get a few sighs from the reader. Easily read in one sitting, this one is great for those few precious minutes you get between the hustle of the holidays!

[ARC Review]: "Demon's Curse"

Demon's Curse by Alexa Egan
Publisher: Pocket Books (December 26, 2012)
Series: Imnada Brotherhood, 1
Genre: Paranormal Romance (Historical)

A fast-paced and captivating debut—the first in the dark and sexy Imnada Brotherhood series about shape shifters in Regency-era England.

A rising star on the Covent Garden stage, Bianca Parrino believes she has everything she wants. Independence. Wealth. And a life finally free of her violent, abusive husband. But when her close friend, Adam, is murdered, and Bianca is suspected in his death, she is unwittingly drawn into the search for his killer, and soon must question everything she believes—about her friend, about herself, and about a world she never knew existed.

A member of the mysterious race of shape-shifting Imnada and part of an elite military unit, Captain Mac Flannery gathered intelligence during the Napoleonic wars. As a result of a savage massacre, Mac and the men he served with are cursed. Now one of them has been found murdered, and Mac suspects the existence of the Imnada has been discovered at last. His only link to unearthing the truth is the beautiful actress who turns up unexpectedly at Adam’s funeral.

Before long, Mac has more to contend with than Bianca’s overt mistrust, his ill-fated attraction to the haughty and beautiful actress, and his ongoing search for an end to the curse. Because Adam’s killer is back, and Mac is next on his list.

My Review:

Reviewer's Note: Writing a review is never easy, but the worst review to write is for a book that was simply “ok”. But, as both a reviewer and a reader, I must be honest. Here, then, is my honest review of Demon's Curse.

Shifters. Magic. England in the 1800s. Yes, please!

I was excited when I first saw the cover for Demon's Curse earlier this year. When I was lucky enough to win an ARC from the author a few months ago, I literally did a little happy dance.

But after actually reading the book, I found myself...disappointed.

It's not that Demon's Curse was a bad book. No, it was good. But it wasn't quite as great as I had built it up to be in my mind.

The main flaw in the book was the lack of character development and world-building; I was left wanting more! I wanted more from Bianca and Mac. I wanted more about the Imnada and the Fey-blood. In short, really, I just wanted more.

What really got to me though was Bianca. Long before the book began, Bianca was married, but her marriage was anything but great. From what little is said, it appears that he was abusive and simply used her. She mentions, ONCE, that she finally killed him, though no one ever suspected her. And then it's never brought up again. Not once!

And even worse, she still suffers from the demons of her past, has a hard time trusting men, and never takes a lover. Until Mac comes along, and suddenly one roll in the bed with him and she's cured of her personal demons. No talking it out, no explaining her fears to him, nothing. She simply goes from flinching when he tries to kiss her to suddenly forgetting about her dead husband's abusive nature.

These two things pissed me off. Really? That's just not right, nor believable, and honestly I had a hard time liking Bianca. Perhaps if there had been more of her character shown to us my thoughts would be different.

However, despite my problems with the characters and world-building, I still liked the story, and I felt that Alexa Egan's writing style was actually pretty good, and I will be coming back for her future books. I really liked the idea behind the book, and even though it wasn't a “wow” book for me, I still enjoyed the journey and I am glad that I had the chance to try this new author!

Favorite Quote:

Her hands unconsciously curled into Mac's fur, her tears falling upon his face as grief spiked painful and bitter against her heart. “Can you change back Can you be . . . be Mac? I need . . . I need arms round me right now. I need to know this will turn out alright.”

Gods, Bianca. If I could do this for you, I would in half a heartbeat. But I cannot. This, you see, is my curse.

3 STARS! Alexa Egan's debut may only tell us the bare minimum about the Imnada and Fey-blood world she has created, but I am sure that future books in the series will truly make the world come alive. For shifter fans who want to try something new, especially one set in a historical setting, pick up Demon's Curse!

Why?

Shifters. Sexy man-chest. Big cats. Oh my! :) I'm a happy Cover Whore today!

I haven't read this series yet, but I've heard great things about it from a few of my friends. I LOVE Ashley's books, no matter the genre or name she writes under, so I'm anxious to catch up on this series. Perhaps before this one releases in June! *fingers crossed*
