[Kame's Review]: "Motorcycle Man"

Motorcycle Man by Kristen Ashley
Publisher: Forever (December 11, 2012)
Series: Dream Man, 4
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Stuck in a colorless world, Tyra Masters decides to chuck her old life and starts searching for something. She doesn’t know what it is until she meets her dream man. The goateed, tattooed, muscled, gravelly voiced motorcycle man who plies her with tequila and gives her the best sex of her life. But she knows it isn’t the tequila and sex talking. He’s it. He’s who she’s been daydreaming about since she could remember.

Until he makes it clear she isn’t who he’s looking for.

Tyra slinks away from his bed, humiliated. The problem is, he’s her new boss. She just may or may not have forgotten to tell him that part.

Kane “Tack” Allen has a rule. He doesn’t employ someone he’s slept with. And he lets Tyra know that in his motorcycle man way. Tyra fights for her job and wins it using sass and a technicality. Tack challenges her that if she hits his bed one more time, she loses her job.

Tyra is determined to keep her job and keep away from Tack. But she makes a big mistake. During their head-to-heads, she lets it all hang out and shows Tack she is who he’s looking for. And Tack has had a good woman slip through his fingers, he’s not about to let that happen again.

Although Tack colors Tyra’s world with a vibrancy that’s blinding, being with him means she has to live in his Motorcycle Club world. Full on, no holds barred. And since Tack’s world, not to mention Tack, is a little scary, Tyra isn’t so sure.

It's Tack's job to convince her.

Kame's Review:

"I didn't know that was what I was looking for. I just knew I wasn't going to settle for anything less, not anything less than perfect. I was going to find the man of my daydreams and nothing else would do. So I never got married because I never found him, no one ever brought that color into my life."

Tyra is invited by a friend to a biker party.  She has a memorable night with one of the bikers.  Her immediate thought was she has found her dream man, until he promptly kicks her out of his bed.  Imagine Tack’s surprise when on Monday morning he is introduced to Tyra his new office manager.  He immediately tells Tyra she can not work for him because of their past, but Tyra fights for the right to keep the job.  Tack vows they will only have a working relationship, but by the end of the week he arrives at Tyra’s house with a pizza.

I would describe Kane “Tack” Allen as a candied apple. He is hard on the outside but sweet inside.  And I was just as surprised as Tyra by his sweet comments.  He is fiercely loyal and lives by a rigid code.  He is a divorced Dad and some of his most character revealing moments are with his kids.  Tyra has some drama in her past and can not handle it any more.  She has decided long ago she would not settle for anyone less than her perfect man. Tack’s biker lifestyle is drastically different than her normal routine, but slowly he gets her to climb on the roller coaster of life. I loved this book - yes Tack can be tactless - but he has a sweet side too.

“This isn’t my know-it-all grin, Red. This is my I’m gonna get me some later grin.”
Still, I shared, “That’s even more annoying.”
“Don’t know shy since me gettin’ some means you’re gonna get some.”

Kristen Ashley wrote incredible dialogue for her characters; I highlighted whole pages of dialogue on my e-reader, and bookmarked many scenes. There were many characters in this book , but not too many to keep track of, this was the last book in her Dream Man series and setup for her new Chaos series. It is a perfect series book, visits past characters (or so I understand from friends) and great for those like me who are coming in at the end and don’t have lots of background. I never got lost or wished I understood a character or past situation.

There should be a rating for a book you can not put down and when you do finish it you immediately go back and start reading all your favorite parts. If you have a shelf on your e-reader named favorites – this book belongs on it – that is where I am shelving it! I am in a book hangover and I am probably going to reread parts all weekend!

I purchased this book on my own after so many of my book friends were raving about the whole series; actually declaring which leading man they liked the best. I am definitely team Tack!

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

I've heard that Ashley's books are pure crack--either you "love-them crack" or "why-do-I-keep-reading-this crack". Either way, I think I need to find out for myself! :) Thanks for this wonderful review, Kame, I'll definitely be putting this one on my list!

What about you? Have you tried any of Ashley's books yet? What did you think of them?

From the author of Because of You comes an all new Coming Home short story.

My Review:

A quick, but well done, add on to Jen and Shane's HEA, Anything For You will please any fan of the first book. I loved this one, and I was happy to see the two work things out. Scott's humor came through again, especially from Vic (Carponti) while giving Shane a bad times about his vasectomy decisions:

“Jen is going to kill you. You know that, right?” Vic Carponti took a long pull off his ever-present Dr Pepper. “I think she has first dibs on your balls. You don’t have exclusive use over them any more.”

  (And a few pages later...)

“So, back to the more pressing matters, are you going to gift wrap your nuts and put a little bow on them and say, ‘Here baby, for Valentine’s Day, I’ve sacrificed my manhood’?”

Shane shook his head and tried not to laugh. “There’s something the matter with you. You know that, right?”

“Sure. My traumatic brain injury is acting up again.” Carponti turned toward the door as it opened. “Speaking of nuts, here’s my wife. I need to get mine out of her purse.”

Really, I've already said it, but I'll say it again--I'd love to have a novella about Vic and his wife. Some sort of prequel perhaps. Anything. I love Vic and his gruff-ness and humor.

4 STARS! If you haven't picked up Scott's books yet, I highly recommend doing so--you could even start with this novella, you won't be lost, but I would say reading Because of You first will make your reading that much more enjoyable. For funny, yet very emotional, military romances, pick up these books today!

Blog Tour: Interview with Liz Carlyle + Giveaway!

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, LIZ! :)

A lifelong Anglophile, Liz Carlyle cut her teeth reading gothic novels under the bedcovers by flashlight. She is the author of over twenty historical romances, including several New York Times bestsellers. Liz travels incessantly, ever in search of the perfect setting for her next book. Along with her genuine romance-hero husband and four very fine felines, she makes her home in North Carolina.

Where to Find Liz:

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

The_Book_Queen: Hi Liz! When did you realize that you wanted to write? And when did you know that romance was the genre for you?

Liz: I always enjoyed writing and majored in Journalism in college.  But my career path was circuitous and I ended up in a different field altogether.  When I began writing fiction, I did it on a whim and I chose romance because it seemed the largest genre with the most subgenres.  I liked dark, romantic stories with historical settings and a big dash of suspense, so that seemed to fall most neatly into the romance category.

TBQ: Your newest release, A Bride By Moonlight, came out in February. Can you tell us a little bit about this book, and why readers are going to love it?

L: I hope readers will like it because it is a complex story with solid character development and a hint of mystery.  Royden Napier has always been an antagonist who moved around the fringes of my past books.  This time, the story is his, and we get to learn about what drives him.

TBQ: Are there other genres you would like to write about? Perhaps other eras or countries?

L: I can see myself writing just about anything save for science fiction or supernatural stories.  My brain doesn’t go there.  While there is an element of the psychic in some of my books, I don’t consider that remotely the same thing.

TBQ: I know we all hate this question, author and reader alike. :) But I have to ask: What are a few of your favorite books and/or authors?

L:When I was young I adored Victoria Holt and Georgette Heyer.  Nowadays I don’t get to read for fun very much.  I generally read suspense.  I’m slowly ticking off the Michael Connelly titles, and I hear good things about Harlan Coben but I think I’ll save him for retirement.

TBQ: I've yet to read any of Heyer's books... One day, I will though! We've all fallen for a hero (or two, or three, or....ahem).  Tell us one hero that you've fallen for—who is he and what drew you to him?

L: I’d have to say Jamie from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.  What’s not to love?  Boyish charm, Scottish good looks, and extreme heroism at every turn of the plot.

TBQ: *sighs* Oh Jamie. Yes, I think he's the perfect example of a hero! What's next-- Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming releases or WIP?

L: I’m just finishing up a book that will be out in the fall entitled IN LOVE WITH A WICKED MAN.  It’s the story of Ned Quartermaine, the notorious owner of the Quartermaine Club.  Regular readers may recognize the name from a couple of my previous books.  He’s a dark, dodgy sort of fellow who oozes charm and danger, but he is about to meet his match—and his polar opposite.

And finally, tell us 3 unique/wacky/fun things about yourself:

  • I bite my nails.
  • I love hot cars.
  • I’m a cat addict, not in recovery.  My access to cats must be carefully monitored by my husband.

The_Book_Queen: Thanks so much for stopping by, Liz, and please know that you are welcome back anytime! Do you have any questions for our readers—something to spark a good discussion? :)

Liz: Actually, I think EVERYONE should have to list those three wacky things about themselves.  ;-)

A Bride by Moonlight by Liz Carlyle
Excerpt

Napier cocked one hip on his windowsill and crossed his arms, studying her. “Elizabeth,” he said quietly, “why are you not leaving?”

Her satin cords, or whatever they were, having been tossed aside, Elizabeth threw up both hands and looked at him incredulously. “Because we’ve work to do?” she snapped. “Because the sooner we’ve done whatever it is you’ve dragged me off to do, the sooner we’ll be away from here?”

Away from here.

Away from her.

God, he prayed for both—but for far different reasons, he was beginning to think.

Suddenly her eyes widened. She cut a glance at the door, then hastened to it, the green velvet of her carriage dress slithering enticingly over her hips. Then, to his extreme discomfort, she bent over a little and set an ear to a flat spot in the carved wood, providing a delectable view.

It seemed an eternity before she straightened and shook her head. “My imagination,” she muttered. “I’m sorry, what were you saying?”

Napier sighed, and altered his strategy. “Make your point, but be quick about it,” he said. “In what way might you be of help?”

Again, the ingenuous expression. “Why, it’s hard to know,” she said, “when I’ve been told nothing of what brought you home to Burlingame. After all, I am just the hired help—no, the blackmailed help. Nonetheless, I will have time alone with all your maddening female relations—and ladies do gossip.
Moreover, they will take no notice whatever of another lady asking a great many questions. Indeed, given our so-called betrothal, they will wonder if I do not.”

“There is some truth to that,” he admitted.

“And then, of course, there’s Fanny.”

“Who, pray, is Fanny?”

“My maid,” she said impatiently. “Servants’ hall tittle-tattle is the purest form of gossip.”

“True, my man Jolley is invaluable in that regard.”

“Furthermore, Fanny and I are apt to be in parts of the house you will not,” she said. “While you’re closeted with your grandfather in some stuffy estate office, the ladies will likely take tea in the drawing room, or sew in the parlor, or read in the library. Are you looking, perhaps, for a weapon? Or purloined goods? Or what?”

He considered it for a moment, and wondered why he should not take her up on it. Elizabeth was a clever piece of work, and the fact that she made his cock throb every time she drew near was merely a testament to his stupidity.

“All right,” he said, setting one hand high on the bedpost. “I need every bit of gossip either you or Fanny come across, so long as you take no risk to get it. And I need paper.”

“Paper?”

“Letter paper,” he amended. “From every room in the house, ideally, though that won’t be possible. Give it to Jolley, or have Fanny do so.”

He could see her brain clocking along like a well-greased gearbox.

“Someone has written you anonymously,” she said. “Or written something suspicious to someone, at any rate. And you wish to discover if the letter came from this house.”

“Never mind what I wish,” he snapped. “I just want samples of letter paper. Don’t do anything foolish. If you’re seen going through a bureau or a desk, just say you needed to jot down a thought or write a letter home.”

“Yes, to my dear uncle Lord Rowend, no doubt,” she said dryly, “who will need time to plan my wedding.”

Napier barked with laughter. “Oh, doubtless.”

It was then that he made the grave misjudgment of looking at her—really looking at her. A grin had curved one corner of that lush mouth and those eyes were again glittering green with mischief.

Napier dragged a hand down his face.

“What?” she demanded.

But the gravity of his situation had returned tenfold. “I made a mistake,” he finally said.

“Oh?” She tilted her head as if to better see him. “Of what sort?”

“Of every sort,” he managed. “Bringing you here. The lies. The clothes. That damned wig. I don’t know, really, what I was thinking. All of it was so … unwise.”

Her incredulous expression returned. “Well, this is a fine time to decide,” she grumbled. “I could have been halfway to the Côte d’Azur by now.”

He grunted. “What, I thought you were bound for Scotland, that last, lawless refuge of scoundrels?”

Her gaze swept over him, dark as the velvet of her gown. “Well, I was bound for somewhere far from you, that much is certain.”

“And would to God I’d let you go,” he muttered.

“Why?” she demanded. “You think me a criminal and—yes, you just said it—a scoundrel. Why would you let me go?”

Her head was still set to one side, her eyes drifting over his face, her full lips slightly parted, and that keen intelligence burning fierce and angry in her eyes.

Well, she wasn’t intelligent enough, apparently.

With one hand, Napier reached out and dragged her hard against him.
“This is why,” he said—just before he kissed her.

She scarcely had time to gasp before he’d captured that lush, taunting mouth in a kiss of long-thwarted lust. Her free hand came up to shove him away, too late. Acting on pure instinct, Napier forced her back against the massive oak bedpost.

She gave a soft moan; a sound of surrender, he thought, and on a surge of desire, he pinned her with the weight of his body, his mouth raking hers.

Though she kept the hand set stubbornly against his collarbone, Elizabeth did not resist.

Not even when he half hoped she would.

Instead, when he drew his tongue over the delicate seam of her lips, she opened on a soft, welcoming sound and allowed him free rein, her reactions almost artless. Napier seized the advantage, slanting his mouth over hers, thrusting again and again, plundering the depths of her mouth.

Dimly, he wondered at her experience, but the thought washed away on another powerful surge—red-hot desire that shot through his belly and drew his loins taut.

Somehow, they slid away from the bedpost and Napier pressed her back into the softness of the mattress. Dragging himself over her, he deepened the kiss, tangling his tongue sinuously with hers, his unslaked need rushing nearly unchecked.

Her hands flowed over him, tentative and almost shy. Then one warm palm slid down his spine, searing him all the way to the small of his back. Silently he begged her to slide it lower, to draw his body hard against hers in that most wicked and suggestive of ways.

He swam now in sheer, sensual hunger and like a man drowning, felt himself floating toward that dark precipice. Beyond it lay a roaring waterfall of need from which there would be no turning back. Because she was dangerous, and would drag him deep. He’d known that.

He knew it now, but the feminine curves of Elizabeth’s long, lithe body molded too perfectly to his, and the warmth of her breasts and her belly pressing against him urged Napier to madness.

They had tumbled sideways across his bed, the down bedding billowing softly about them, and Elizabeth’s skirts slithered halfway up her leg.

Driven by one thing now, Napier thrust again, rhythmically sliding his tongue along hers in blatant invitation. And when she drew up her knee on a soft sound of pleasure, it was as if the heat of her thigh left him shivering.
Napier was so lost, he scarcely realized his hands now cradled her face, or that his mouth had slid over her cheek and along her temple. That he was whispering things: mad words of worship and desire.

One hand went to the swell of her breast, inching the fabric down until the hard, sweet bud of her nipple grazed his palm, sending heat shafting into his groin again.

“Ah, Elizabeth,” he whispered, his tongue tracing the shell of her ear. “Let me—”

“N-No.” Gasping, she at last put her hand to good use, shoving it against his shoulder. “Napier, st-stop. I—we—we don’t want this.”

By God, he wanted it.

But her words were like a dash of cold water. Napier stopped, his nostrils flared wide, his breath already coming hard.

Beneath his weight, Elizabeth looked wanton and needy, her tumble of curls bright against the billowing whiteness of the counterpane. She desired him; in that his instincts did not fail. Her lips were wet and slightly parted now, her eyes somnolent and glassy green. He could feel her body trembling—but not, he thought, from fear.

“Elizabeth, you want this,” he whispered, half hoping she would deny it. “You want me inside you.”

Her eyes flicked to his, her tongue darting out to lick her lips. “Yes,” she rasped. “I won’t lie. But … we can’t.”

He kissed her again, more tenderly now, foolishly unwilling to surrender his half-won prize; the thing for which he’d burned for days on end—if not longer.

But she urged him gently away. “Please don’t,” she whispered, her long lashes fanning shut like lace above her cheeks. “We’ll regret it. You’ll regret it.”

He let his face fall forward to touch hers, and forced his breathing to calm. “Yes,” he said on a harsh laugh. “I would.”

“And I deserve something better,” she said softly, “than a man who will regret me. I am, alas, a hopeless romantic.”

He had nothing to say to that. And when her eyes went soft with tenderness, something in Napier’s throat constricted.

Good God. She was a romantic?

Napier brushed his lips over her perfectly arched eyebrow and rolled away. For a long moment he lay beside her on the soft mattress, staring up at the plaster roundel in the middle of his ceiling and waiting for his rock-hard erection to subside past the point of pain.

Elizabeth deserved better.

But most women were romantics. Why had he believed her something less?

“You are too quiet,” she said, her voice tremulous. “Am I … ”

“Are you what?” His bollocks tight and aching, the words came out more harshly than he’d meant.

“Have I made you angry?” she said. “Was this … part of that price you expected me to pay?”

He cursed beneath his breath.

“Oh, I know you think me some sort of Jezebel.” Her voice was strengthening. “I cannot stop you from thinking that. But understand I would have done anything, Napier, to avenge my father’s death. I would have paid any price. But this price? Merely to save my own skin? Oh, you need to know here and now that I will not pay it.”

“You think that’s what this is?” he demanded. “A price to be paid? Part of that deal with the devil you think you’ve made?”

“Is it?”

“My God, Elizabeth.” The knot in his throat tightened again. “What have I ever done to make you imagine me that sort of man?”

“N-nothing,” she whispered.

“Damn it, do you see what I mean?” he said. “This is what a mistake feels like.”

The plaster roundel blurred before his vision—Phaethon felled by a lightning bolt, somewhat aptly. She said no more, and after a time, he somehow found it in him to collect his wits and help her off the bed. But as she turned her back to restore her clothing to order, he saw they had crushed the satin cords she’d unfurled from her hair.

On a pathetic impulse, he picked them up and coiled them tight about his hand—coiled them so tight his blood ceased to flow—then relented and shoved them ruthlessly into his pocket.

She turned around with a wobbly smile, her bodice restored. “You were right,” she said. “I oughtn’t have barged in. I take full responsibility.”

Napier shrugged, and forced a smile that probably looked like a sneer. “A lady may always refuse a gentleman’s advances,” he said, gripping the bedpost rather too tightly. “My apologies, Elizabeth. There is a train back to London tomorrow at eight. I can see that you are on it.”

For a moment, her expression turned inward. “And go back to what?” she said hollowly. “I have no life in London now. I cannot even go back to my charity work at Lady Leeton’s school.”

She was right, and Napier knew it. Worse, he did not want her to go. “Very well,” he said. “Then you may trust this will not happen again.”

My Review:

Marquita Valentine, you've done it again! I swear, with each new release, my love for this author only grows--and I was an instant fan with page 1 of her debut! :)

Driving To You is April and Finn's story. I'll admit, I was unsure if I would like April. After all, in Drive Me Crazy, she appeared to be a shallow bitch. Can Valentine change my opinion of her, I wondered? Yes! In this novella, we see more of April and how, despite the life the world thinks she has, things have been rough for her. She wants to support herself, not rely on daddy. She plays a part, but she's tired of it. She may not be a perfect heroine, she may not be sweet and well, "traditional", but I liked her, and I was happy to see her receive a HEA.

Finn---really, all I need to say is this: Irish. Yum! I love a good ginger hero... :D

Here are just a few of my favorite quotes:

"This girl’s got you all tied up, and not in a Fifty Shades kinda way either." Hunter popped a handful of peanuts in his mouth. "I say it’s time to move on."

"While I say it’s time for you to read How to Hold On to Your Mancards."

"Please, Tiffany is all about some romance and I’m the beneficiary of it." Hunter grinned, his white teeth flashing against his dark skin. "In fact, I bought her an e-reader for Christmas so she didn’t have to wait—"

"Oh, Jesus." Finn scrubbed his face with his hand. "You don’t actually read those with her, do you?"

"Real men read romance, Finn."

Finn chuckled. "You’re whipped."

And this:

"Now that’s a sight," he said with a wiggle of his brows.
She giggled, then slapped a hand over her mouth, like she’d just revealed her most shocking secret to him.
"Don’t hide from me," he ordered, pulling her hand away from her face. "And don’t be afraid to be you with me."
"I’m not like other women—you know, nice and sweet," she said. The vulnerability on her face was nearly his undoing.
"Not much of a sweet tooth." He lowered himself between her thighs and parted her delicate sex, giving her a lick. "I prefer tart." Another lick and her hips rolled. "A little tangy." This time he found her clit and sucked, until she beat at his shoulders and called out his name. "Full of vim and vinegar."
Pushing her hair out of her eyes, she blinked at him. "I taste like vinegar down there?"
"No," he said with a low laugh, then crawled up her body, mindful of what lay between them. "Care to taste for yourself?"
She turned her head and he kissed her ear instead. "Maybe another time."

4.5 STARS! Why do I love Valentine's books so much? Because they have everything you could possibly want: sweet moments mixed in with "wow" steamy ones, enough wit and light fun to keep me smiling, great stories and wonderful characters. I've yet to find myself bored or unhappy while reading her books, and I don't believe this will ever happen! Truly a must read author. Driving To You will warm your heart and melt your ereader, all at the same time!

My Review:

With this final installment in this serial, Grace and Colin finally get the HEA they both deserve.

What I loved most about this novella wasn't the love scenes, but rather when Colin pulled out all of Grace's letters, wrote the reply he was never able to before, and read them to her. Not only did this help to heal him, but it helpe to strengthen their relationship as well, as Grace finally knew he trusted her with his past.

3.5 STARS! A fine finale to Eloisa James' first attempt at a serial, and one that you can easily read from start to finish with a smile on your face. I'll admit I'm not enthusiastic about the thought of reading serials often, but when done well, such as this one, I think it's something I can enjoy once in a while.

I received an e-ARC of this serial from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Let's Talk Magic

Thanks for hosting me on TBQs Book Palace today! Seeing as we're in the mood for some hot paranormal romance – and aren't we always? – let's talk about magic.

Spells, enchantments, hexes, curses. In ye olden days, you could wave your sparkly wand and say 'abracadabra', and you'd turn your mother into a frog. That's the kind of thing you don’t find much in paranormals these days. We like things to be more realistic. Power always has a flip side, and magic comes at a cost.

The fallen angels in my Seven Signs series have magical powers. Sure, their magic is a tad unreliable now. It only works if they believe in it, which is a tough break when you've been cursed to walk the earth for your sins.

For instance, in Redemption, my hero, Japheth, can flash, or teleport, from place to place. His weapon – a sword, of course, what self-respecting angel of vengeance doesn't wield a sword? – is imbued with holy fire, and materializes at his whim. He can curse his demon enemies and set them on fire, if he's quick enough. And he can track the scent of evil.

Mostly. Unless the evil is really tricky about it. At the beginning of Redemption, Japheth gets tricked by Rose, his heroine, into believing she's a harmless human. In truth, Rose is an angel-slayer, a cursed vampire assassin out for his blood. And guess what? She's got magical powers, too. She can see in the dark, seduce you with a breath, make herself invisible. So sorry.

If the price of Japheth's power is obedience and humility, then the price of Rose's power is damnation. She's bound to a horrid demon master by a terrible mistake that caused the death of someone she loved. If she doesn't please her demon prince, he'll cast her down to hell.

Two assassins, pitted to the death. The cursed vs. the fallen. Both must pay a dark price to be what they are. But that's the cruel, inescapable nature of magic.

And that's why I love paranormals! Even if you're ultra-powerful, you're still in many ways a slave. To blood, magic, passion, revenge, rage, some black and hungry addiction you can't resist. It's very cool. And it's totally hot.

Anyway. I hope you enjoy watching Japheth and Rose fight it out in Redemption. They each must make sacrifices, for love and honor and each other. Oh, and there's the little matter of saving the world from certain doom. No one said this job was easy!

Publisher: Berkley (March 5, 2013)
Series: The Seven Signs, 1
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Japheth the Tainted is on the hunt for a mysterious demon vampire. But meeting her face-to-face might disarm his warrior spirit—and spark an unquenchable passion with apocalyptic consequences.

As a fallen angel, Japheth is determined to make his way back to heaven by staying pure and slaying hellspawn. With a new scourge of vampires unleashed by a blood-drinking demon, the Prince of Thirst, there’s plenty to be done. But Japheth is after one vampire in particular—the one they call the Angel Slayer.

Rose Harley never wanted to be a vampire, but the Prince of Thirst can turn even the kindest soul into a soldier of hell. Feeling abandoned by God, she stalks the West Village taking revenge on his angels—until she meets her match.

When Japheth and Rose encounter each other, the battle is fierce and charged with desire. But when they discover a common enemy—the Prince of Thirst himself—they form a dangerous alliance that could either cost them their eternal lives, or spark a love more powerful than heaven or hell.

Redemption by Erica Hayes
Excerpt
“Looking for someone, angel?”

That honey-blood voice quivered Japheth’s feathers taut.

She grinned, mocking. Leaning against the redbrick wall beneath a rusted fire escape, steeped in magical shadow and hot vampire stink.

He stared, dumb. Tall for a girl, only a head shorter than he. Long legs, encased in blue jeans and black army boots. Her short black t-shirt stretched over full breasts, flashing that tempting skin above a silver belt buckle. Her bare arms shone, muscular but womanly. Sexy dimples in her cheeks, perfectly shaped for cupping in his palms.

The bloody feathers of slain angels, gold and white and red, stuck through the thick dark braid she tossed over her shoulder. A few wisps escaped to play around her face in the summer-night breeze. He wanted to trace their path with his fingertips, cheekbone to chin to cherry-ripe lips . . .

“Matter of fact, I am,” he said tightly. “Your sniveling master. Fluvium, is it? Prince of Thirst? Tell me where he is and I might kill you quickly.”

She laughed, fangs glinting. Sharp, lethal like a tigress’s. “You’ve come to kill Fluvium? Good luck with that.” She lolled on one foot, eyeing him speculatively, sizing up her prey. “Japheth, right? Of the Tainted Host? Cute name, for a hamster.”

Sweet lord, his name in her mouth sounded . . . dirty. He swallowed, rough. “How’d you know that?”

“I know my enemy.” She licked ripe lips.

“Yeah?” he said coldly. “Well, I don’t want to know you, whore. I don’t care what your name is—”

“Rose Harley,” she cut in swiftly, with a wicked grin. “Whoops. Too late. Sorry about that. You like it anonymous, don’t you? So you can pretend they’re not people when you damn them to eternal torment?”

His grip spasmed around his sword. Sweet heaven, he wanted to stab her. Fill her with burning steel. Twist it, thrust it deeper, make her moan . . . “You don’t need me to damn you. You made your choice. Tell me where Fluvium’s hiding, and I’ll put you out of your misery.”

She laughed again, and strolled towards him, hands in pockets. “You sure could learn a thing or two from demons about making deals. Like, I dunno. Offering me something I actually want?”

Her knife still lay sheathed, in her thigh holster. Unafraid, was she? Grudging admiration tingled under his skin, and he crackled it off. Nothing admirable about a demon minion’s attitude. “So you do know where he’s hiding, then.”

“And what if I do?” She draped her sultry gaze over his silver-clad chest, his bare arms, his glowing blue sword . . . Her scrutiny flushed treacherous heat right to the top of his head. He could smell her, blood and corruption, yes, but underneath, the hot salty musk of female flesh . . .

Surely, she was his nemesis. Sent to tempt him into falling. Well, he wouldn’t give in. Not when he was so close to redemption.
