[Blog Tour]: Guest Post with Danica Avet + Giveaway!

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, DANICA! :)

Danica Avet was born and raised in the wilds of South Louisiana (that would be somewhere around Houma) where mosquitoes are big enough to carry off small children and there are only two seasons: hot and hotter. With a BA in History, she figured there were enough fry cooks in the world and decided to try her hand at writing.

Danica is the lucky pet of a compulsively needy dog and two cats. The pitter-patter of little feet has been known to make her break out into a cold sweat.

Writing is how she gives the voices in her head a way out. When she isn’t writing, working or contemplating the complexities of the universe, she spends time gathering inspiration from her insane family, reads far more than any sane person would want to, and watches hot burly men chase an oblong ball all over a field.

Superpower Shopping List

Hi y’all, I’m so very happy to be here today for a chance to talk about my newest release, Touched by Lightning, the first book in the Love’s Defenders series with Ellora’s Cave. This is a book very near and dear to my heart since it combines my love for superheroes and romance. I do love my superhero movies, but they never have enough sex in them. And not like bow-chicka-wow-wow sex, but real chemistry that steams up the screen.

But I’m not here to bemoan the lack of hot love scenes in superhero movies. Nope, I’d like to talk about superpowers. Because that’s what makes a great hero, right? The ability to do things with their mind or body that no one else can do and using those powers for the greater good.

While my writing buddy, Lea Barrymire, and I were constructing the world for this series, I had the pleasurable job of searching for superpowers. Do y’all have any idea how many there are out there? Like a gazillion! Okay, maybe not that many, but there are a hell of a lot and some of them have so many subcategories it’s like a really weird family tree.

Sorting through all of those powers and abilities and deciding which ones we wanted in our world was a bit like being a PMSing woman in a Godiva store. I couldn’t pick just one thing, I had to pick a lot. So I arrowed more towards the powers I’d love to have if given the chance. And I thought I’d share a list of the ones I really liked, or thought were cool.

Teleportation. Okay, who wouldn’t want to be able to go anywhere in the world with just a thought? Think of the money you’d save on airfare! Not to mention you could go to places that are hard to reach, whether because of unrest, distance, or difficulty. See the world in a way no one else could. That would be awesome.

Telekinesis. Because that would rock the Casbah. You know how some people put their alarm clocks on the complete opposite side of the room from them so they have to get out of bed to shut it off? With telekinesis all you have to do is bring the clock to you. Okay, so that’s a very silly reason to have telekinesis, but I love my sleep. (Obviously I’d make a horrible superhero because I don’t like waking up in the middle of the night for anything.)

Enhanced senses. No more of that slowly developing squint as I get older. I’d be able to read the fine print on a grasshopper’s newspaper, smell the scent on a rose from a mile away, hear…my neighbor snoring, smell someone’s feet from across a room, see every blemish on my face. Okay, never mind, I don’t want enhanced senses.

Superhuman speed. I could run circles around Usain Bolt. I could get housework done in a quarter of the time it takes now. I could speed walk through the store and be finished in five minutes…and then wait 20 minutes for a checkout lane to come available. But then I remember I really don’t like to run. I’ve always said I wasn’t even sure if I’d run if I was being chased, so maybe I’ll have to skip that one too.

Those are just a few abilities I’d like to have, or maybe not. I think it was Uncle Ben in Spiderman who said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” And as I think we’ve all learned by now, Danica likes to chill out and not press herself too hard. Although I still think it’d be cool to have some kind of superpower. I’m just not sure which one I want.

In Touched by Lightning, both my heroine and my hero have superhuman powers. Gyda is an empathy who developed a feral mind while in captivity. She’s able to feel the emotions of those around her and, if she’s motivated enough, she has superhuman strength and speed. Brit, my hero, can manipulate electricity. He’s also a siphon for the Order of Themis, an organization of superhuman people who fight for justice. That means when his boss, the Order’s Director is close to blowing a major fuse, he can siphon some of her power from her and funnel it away with his power, usually in the form of lightning.

Now that’s what I call cool. What about you guys? If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Excerpt

He sighed and took his hat off to run his fingers through his hair, his frustration with her silence obvious. “Look, I’m sorry…” He looked at her and away, his cheeks turning even darker. His Adams apple bobbed as he gulped, but he brought his gaze back around to meet her gaze again, hungry resolve in his eyes. “I’m sorry for what I did to you in the woods.” He cleared his throat and settled his hat back on his head. She wasn’t staring at his biceps that bulged and flexed with the movement and the warmth in her belly had absolutely nothing to do with attraction. “There’s some powerful chemistry between us, sweetheart,” he finally said on a near growl. “And it just got the better of me. I swear I won’t touch you again until you want me to.”
With each word he spoke, her jaw dropped a little more until she was gaping at him, her brain firing on all cylinders as she processed his belief in his attractions. Okay, he was hot. He had that power thing mingling with some country-boy charm, which she found extremely sexy despite her natural repulsion of all things male. He knew how to ply his electricity in such a way that it made a woman cream with want. His body… The man had a body to die for and those tattoos just begged her to explore them with her fingers and tongue.
Even his confidence was sexy to an extent. Her brain rejected that thought. He was assuming she’d just fall into his lap like some slut. Because you totally did twice before, idiot, Sixteen reminded her with a satisfied chuckle. All that man has to do is lay a kiss on you and you’re a goner.
Her cheeks flushed at the reminder because it was true. He’d kissed her twice and both times she’d fallen prey to his power and that fucking chemistry she wasn’t prepared to defend herself against. It wasn’t as though it was something she’d come into contact with before. Sixteen was the sexual one, the one who discovered the men who wanted to be dominated by a woman. Gyda just let her have her way and pretended it never happened. So yeah, she had no idea how to fight attraction like this.

And he planned to use it against her. Holy shit.

Loved the excerpt!

As for superpowers, as long as I could turn it off I'd like to be able to read minds. Super speed and strength would be nice too. :-)

Agreed! I shudder at the thought of reading some people's minds, but others would be AWESOME!
