Running and Writing

Like Ruby Heart, I am a runner.

It feels strange to write those words. In Winning Ruby Heart, Ruby runs one 50K race, one 50-mile race and two 100-mile races. I run two miles twice a week at lunch and three miles on the weekend (even though I tell myself that I'm working up to more). But despite the huge difference in the distances we run, Ruby and I are both runners.

And that's one of the things I love about running. I'm not a fast runner and I'm not a far runner, but to call yourself a "runner," the only thing required is that you put one foot in front of the other at a pace faster than walking and you do it on a regular (or semi-regular) basis. Distance and speed don't matter. The seventy-year old woman who finishes the Chicago marathon just before they are about to close the course is just as much a runner as the Kenyan who finished first.

When I decided to write an athlete heroine, I picked running for many practical reasons, but the biggest reason was my own love of the sport. I love the inclusivity of it and its simplicity. I get to participate, because races from 5Ks to 100-mile ultramarathons celebrate the amateur.

Ruby loves the sport for different reasons than I do. She needs a sport with a strong amateur base because she needs to be reminded that people can participate for pure love, not for money and fame.  Ruby loves competition, both with herself and with others. She loves to push her body as far as it will go, and see if she can get it to go further. Running, especially the more extreme ultra-marathons she participates in in the book, allow her to do that. As the story progresses, running also allows her to give back to the world.

Whether you love running or not, I think you will love Winning Ruby Heart. My love (and Ruby's love) for running are on the page, but so is a celebration of second chances, a hyperactive Dalmatian, and (of course) a tender love story.

I got to write about my love for running, both in this blog post and in the book. What hobbies and sports do you love and why?

:) I know what you mean! I love taking my two pups for long walks as well. This summer we manage two walks most days, each walk 2.5 miles. Now that I have classes, our walks have been cut back a bit, which has all three of us a bit depressed! ;)

:) Of course. Swimming is both relaxing and a great form of exercise, I find.

Taking a dog for a long walk is a lovely way to pass the time. My dog is old (14) so our walks are slower and shorter than they used to be, but I still love going with him.

Swimming is one of those things I wish I could get into. It *seems* so great. I'm a bit jealous of people who enjoy it.
