[Review]: "Promise Me This"

Promise Me This by Christina Lee
Publisher: InterMix (October 7, 2014)
Series: Between Breaths, 4
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance

A new love will test the boundaries of passion between a privileged boy next door and the tattooed, blue-haired girl who helps him embrace his wild side...

Nate has developed quite a playboy reputation around campus. It's not that he doesn't respect or trust women; he doesn't trust himself. The men in Nate’s family are prone to abusive behavior—a dirty secret that Nate’s been running from his entire life—so Nate doesn't do relationships. But he can’t help himself around one girl…

Jessie is strong, independent, and works at a tattoo parlor. Nate can’t resist getting close to her, even if it’s strictly a friendship. But it doesn't take long for Nate to admit that what he wants with Jessie is more than just friendly.

With Jessie, he can be himself and explore what he’s always felt was a terrifying darkness inside him. Even when Nate begins to crave her in a way that both shocks and horrifies him, Jessie still wants to know every part of him. Testing their boundaries together will take a trust that could render them inseparable… or tear them apart.

My Review:

Me: You okay with being in a couple of the photos for my project?

Him: You're going to use some of those shots I was in?

Me: Yeah, because they're kick ass and it'll look weird if I crop you out.

Him: I could see how that would be a problem, he is pretty large. Probably takes up the whole frame.

Me: Is that what the speck of dust was? That explains it.

Him: Speck of dust? Dust storm, baby.

Me: *eye roll * Keep it in your pants, Square.

I love a good dirty talker, an alpha in the bedroom. Nate fit the bill perfectly. On the surface, he may seem like a typical spoiled rich boy. The truth is so much more complex, deeper and darker than everyone thinks.

I loved Promise Me This. Loved it! Nate was great, a tortured, imperfect hero that I fell for, hard. I wanted to hug him, wanted him to push me against a wall . . . ahem. *happy sigh*

“He said, 'Jessie, promise me this: Explore all the different sides of you. We all have darkness and brightness inside of us. You won't know exactly what you're made of until you embrace all of it, live it. Only then will you be able to face all that life has to offer, head-on'.”

Jessie was a strong heroine. Her character was a bit more complicated than what the world sees. I loved when she gave it right back to Nate, joking or pushing to show him that he's not the boss.

The need in her eyes turned into unadulterated hunger and fueled that inner part of me that I was trying desperately to ignore. It was like she was the light to my darkness. The key to my enclosure.

Their chemistry was addicting and the smexy scenes were very, very satisfying!

My one issue with this book revolves around Nate's family troubles. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll be vague. The climax of the issues seemed too sudden, and the resolution incomplete, considering everything his mom and brother had been through. I wish Lee had spent a dozen more pages fleshing out these issues, but even so I loved the rest of the story.

Let me be your moon – so that every night, I can illuminate the lonely cavern of your soul.

[ . . . ]

Let me be your sun – so when I burn out each night, you can be the breath and the beacon that leads me home.

Promise Me This was a great read, the perfect mix of emotion, sex, and fun banter. I tried reading the first book in this series, but for whatever reason at the time, DNFed it. Now I'm anxious to try it again, as well as catching up on on the 2nd and 3rd book. I think it is safe to say that Lee has become a new favorite author for me!

*sigh* Yes. This one was amazing. I could see wanting a few more pages with that bit. I'm also really greedy and would have loved, I don't know, 100 more pages? LOL

*nods* Yep, I'm greedy that way too!

This book is definitely very quotable and it was neat the way you strung them through your review. I loved this story and really anticipate each book in the series.

Thanks! :) Yes, I'm trying to refrain from buying and reading all the books RIGHT NOW. Because, you know, I have classes and review copies piling up, and that ol' TBR pile in the corner . . . But soon, very soon, I'll be reading another one of her books. And I'm very anxious for the next book for Dakota.
