Whatcha Reading? (March 24th)

It's been a week. Not so much in romancelandia -- at least, not like last week's WTFery, thank god! -- but rather in my own life. Nothing serious, just little things that took up more time than I planned, or popped up without warning at all, and left me with no time to record and edit a podcast for today.

In romancelandia news, the RITAs were announced this week, and you can find the full list HERE. Congrats!

My reading week was a mixed bag -- some okay, some ugh, and one top read for the month. My first, actually. Damn, I've been in a reading slump without realizing it; I've only given two 4 1/2 star ratings, and no 5 star ratings, in the last 2 months. O.O Let's hope April is a better reading month as far as favorites.

So without further ado, let's get into what I read for the week!

What I Read:

Navy SEAL Rescue by Susan Cliff
Out April 1st
2 1/2 Stars

✦ SEAL is captured by enemy, heroine rescues him b/c she needs his help
✦ Heroine of color (Assyrian), who is (almost) a doctor
✦ Quick read, mostly enjoyed
✦ Didn’t always love the hero, iffy on the POC rep in here; he came across as very much a privileged white dude looking down on everyone (aka, POC) around him and not being respectful of cultural differences and . . . IDK, it just gave me some not-so-good gut feelings, you know?

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost
Narrated by Tavia Gilbert
3 1/2 Stars

✦ 1st POV, heroine only
✦ She can control electricity, read objects/people
✦ He’s an ancient vampire with a fire affinity
✦ Still side-eyeing the virginity BS
✦ Overall: a pretty good read
✦ Book 1 for this couple; I'll still come back and finish the others at some point

Undone by the Ex-Con by Talia Hibbert
4 1/2 Stars
March Royal Pick

✦ Black heroine
✦ Former ballerina, now teaches rather than performs
    ✦ Diabetic
✦ Ex-con (don’t worry, he’s not a bad guy), now author
✦ Class differences
✦ Hot and fun and just GOOD
✦ Like all of Hibberts' books, it's sex and body positive -- YES PLEASE GIMME MORE OF THAT
✦ Only complaint is the ending needed to be less rushed and a bit more developed

A Distant Heart by Sonali Dev
Narrated by Soneela Nankani and Neil Shah
4 Stars

✦ Set in India
✦ Childhood friends to lovers
✦ Class differences
✦ He’s a cop
✦ She wants to be a journalist, has had major health problems all her life
✦ Beautiful writing and story, though I had a love/hate w/ the past/present set up for the storytelling
✦ Dev's books are more contemporary w/ romantic elements, and in this case a bit of light mystery/suspense towards the end. Enjoyable, of course, but best to know going in that the romance isn't always the driving force
✦ Very mild heat (one scene, not very explicit at all)
