Guest Blogger/Author: Fiona Druce

It's Paranormal Week here at TBQ's Book Palace as part of my 4 year blogoversary celebration!

And don't forget to stop by to enter my Week 2 giveaway for the event!
It's not just about the authors, but the readers and bloggers who love this genre as well! Today, Fiona Druce is on the blog to share a guest post about Urban Fantasy. Enjoy!

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

"UF Rocks!"

Dragons. Angels. Faeries. Glimpses of elven ears and mystical mischief.

Times Square. Big Ben. The Golden Gate Bridge and Van Ness Avenue.

Tales of fantasy are no longer restricted to the mysteries of a dark wood off a dusty trail. They’ve become city slickers.
Urban Fantasy is the new kid on the block of the Hip and Fabulous. Now-a-days it’s common to read about the whispery beat of an angel’s wing right by the Empire State Building, as people drive to work. Other books have Dragons running Fortune 500 companies. Faeries are lawyers, cops, and detectives. Vampires often grace the pages of recent romance novels in the role of Senators, TV anchors, and brothers-in-law.

Oh, and they like humans, too. Like. Really like them.

This immediate relationship between the fantastical and the real has made these books an absolute top commodity in today’s publishing market. Stories about going to work Friday morning and waking up Saturday in bed with a man who turns into a werewolf on command bring fantasy to real life. You can actually see yourself in the start of the story and it pulls you along on an adventure only your dreams have ever taken you before.

UF is any book written about fanciful creatures or time travel (from the past) in a modern day setting. It’s the beautiful hybrid between Contemporary and Fantasy and it’s a blend that has captured the eye (and heart) of many readers.

While we can’t forget the beauty of being whisked away to times before or to worlds never seen, there’s something special to be said about finding adventure- literally- in your own backyard. It comes to you; you don’t have to find it. You become a character that is differentiated from your peers, while still among your peers.

UF is one of my absolute all-time favorite genres and, as such, I could never list all my favorites. However, if you’re interested in a little May to December relationship with a man who is a millennium older than you are (he’s in incredible shape for a man that age… or our age…) this might be a place you should take a peek.

Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunter Series and Psy/Changeling series are a unique take on the UF genre, making fantasy more of a science fiction. Here, you can find beautiful but terrifying angels, gorgeous but vicious vampires, and breathtaking but powerful shifters.

Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series is a darker take on the fantastical realm, leaning a little bit more on our traditional understandings but with a smooth modern edge. Meet a world of Fae who will take your heart and steal your soul at the same time. Dark hearted men, strong hearted women, and hard-hearted villains, these books are for those with a taste for the more shadowy world.

Janet Chapman lightens it up with her Highland Series and its associated offshoots, bringing the much beloved Highland heat through time to wreak havoc on the hearts (and panties) of women who are just like you.

If you’re looking for a lighter touch that will make you giggle as much as it makes you sizzle, check out Katie MacAlister and her H-A-W-T dragon series, starting with Aisling Grey.

HP Mallory offers a variety for you with curious witches, sexy warlocks, mysterious vampires, sexy Fae, and more.

Patricia Briggs eases up on the sizzle-factor but her action-filled and thrilling plot lines will keep you riveted.

And these are just a start. Barely a start.

The Urban Fantasy genre offers a bit for anyone and everyone. If you can imagine it, there’s a book for it, written to involve you in your everyday life.

These books will have you turning around corners and wondering if the hot guy in Accounting is as “wolfish” as he seems. Maybe he’d be the perfect match for your Little Red Robin Hood this weekend?

No matter what your dreams, there’s something out there to set off just the spark you need. It’s Urban Fantasy and it’s next door.

About Fiona:
I’m Fiona Druce and I write romantic fiction. I know, isn’t it adorable? I don’t just write romantic fiction: I write humorous romantic fiction. The kind that I’ll let my kids read when they’re ready. In say, ooo, forty years. I might say thirty-five, if they’re extra, extra good.

I love to write but I actually love to read more. I got started writing because, well, I liked it. I got into the idea of actually publishing said work when I realized I couldn’t afford to feed my reading addiction. So here I am!

I truly hope that you enjoy my characters as much as I do. They were a blast to get to know and I’m so glad to share them with you.

Oh, and before I forget, Fiona has a question for you, dear readers.

Fiona:
What do you see in your dreams? Anything you’d want to see in a book?

Blogger Interview: Meet Kayla from Reading On the Wild Side!

It's Paranormal Week here at TBQ's Book Palace as part of my 4 year blogoversary celebration!

And don't forget to stop by this post to enter my Week 2 giveaway for the event!

It's not just about the authors, but the readers and bloggers who love this genre as well! Today, I'm interviewing fellow blogger, Kayla, who's favorite genre is paranormal. I hope you enjoy!

Blogger Interview

The_Book_Queen: Hi Kayla! :) Welcome to the blog, and thanks for joining my blogoversary celebration!
Kayla: Thank so much for having me here Danielle! Congrats on your Four Year Blogoversary, that is a major accomplishment!

TBQ: Thanks! :)
Vampires, shifters, and demons—oh my! Paranormal romances have a little bit of everything.  What book/author/series started your love for paranormals?
Kayla: The book that started my love for Paranormals was Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione. It was amazing, the world that Ione built was so original and the sex between Eidolon and Tayla was so HOT!

TBQ: :) I LOVE Ione's books, I can still remember when I read book 1 and 2.. *sigh* Oh, I think it's time for me to do a reread!
Why paranormals? What is it about this genre that you love so much?
Kayla: I love that you can read about something that doesn’t really exist, there is just something about Paranormal creatures that intrigue me. They have since I was a little girl watching Queen of the Damned LOL!

TBQ: *Nods* Yep, we all need something to escape reality, and PNR works great!
Are there any books that you think a potential paranormal romance fan HAS to read in order to truly appreciate the genre? Why?
Kayla: I would definitely read these four books Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian, Fantasy Lover by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dark Lover by J.R. Ward, and Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione. Those four are the the first books in their series and they all ROCKED my world!

TBQ: I second every one of your answers--great books, great series, great authors! Really, you can't go wrong with them! :)
If your friend told you she didn't like paranormal romances, what book would you recommend to her to change her mind?
Kayla: I would recommend ANY of Larissa Ione’s books… I am a big fan of hers lol, can you tell?

TBQ: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 books would you take with you? Do you grab these books because of the stories, the covers, the hunky heroes...? All of the above? :)
Kayla: Hmm… I would bring Deadly Obsession by Kristine Cayne, Captured by Julia Rachel Barrett, Stud by Cheryl Brooks, Covet by Felicity Heaton, and Sin Undone by Larissa Ione because of the stories AND BECAUSE OF THE SIZZLING COVERS!

TBQ: Great choices--I've only read one of the books, but the others, yeah they're going on my list! :)
You are Owner of the blog “Reading on the Wild Side”--can you tell us a little bit about the blog, what you do, and why you started reviewing?
Kayla: Hmm… I started reviewing because I accidentally stumbled upon blogging. I was looking for a certain book one day and came across Urban Girl Reader’s blog and fell in love with it. I LOVED to read but had never heard of “book blogging” so I kept looking at other blog’s and finally got up the courage to make mine. I really wanted to keep track of the books that I read and talk to other people about books. When I first started blogging my blog was called Simply Kayla’s Book Reviews and it was strictly a Romance blog, and then I discovered the Young Adult genre and fell in love with it too. I decided to turn Simply Kayla’s Book Reviews into a Young Adult Blog and so I re-named it “Bengal Reads” and had it re-designed. Well, after about 2 months I really missed my Romance blog so I decided to create Reading On The Wild side which if you’ll notice is the slogan for “Bengal Reads” I did that because I thought of “Reading On The Wild Side” as sort of my spin-off blog to Bengal Reads. That’s when I started trying to find a partner for “Reading On The Wild Side” and found the amazing Arianne who also has her own blog.

TBQ: Have your reading habits changed any since you started to review?

Kayla: Yes, I don’t write book reports anymore HAHA, I write what I felt about the book and make my reviews fun and not too long.

TBQ: I'm always on the lookout for great paranormal romances (ignore the towering TBR mountain in the corner...*ahem*). What books are you looking forward to reading (new, old, or not yet released)?
Kayla: I am looking forward to reading Gabriel’s Rapture by Sylvain Reynard, Try Me by Diane Alberts, Masquerade by Felicity Heaton, and Retribution by Dana Delamar. [Great--adding them to my list as we speak! :)]

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Kayla! :) Do you have any questions for our readers—something that will spark a good discussion?

Kayla:
Who all recommends me to read 50 Shades of Grey?? Why or why not?
- Thanks again for having me Danielle, I LOVE The Book Queen’s Palace and feel so lucky to be able to visit and chat with everyone!

Blogger Interview: Meet Arianne from Reading On the Wild Side!

It's Historical week here at TBQ's Book Palace as part of my 4 year blogoversary celebration!

It's not just about the authors, but the readers and bloggers who love this genre as well! Today, I'm interviewing fellow blogger, Arianne, who's favorite genre is historical. I hope you enjoy!

And don't forget to stop by to enter my Week 1 giveaway for the event!

Blogger Interview

The_Book_Queen: Hi Arianne! :) Welcome to the blog, and thanks for joining my blogoversary celebration!
I hear that you are a huge fan of historical romances—my first true love, when it comes to romance novels. What book/author/series started your love for historicals?
Arianne: I don’t really remember what my first historical romance book was…unless The Other Boleyn Girl counts? That was the first book I ever read and didn’t finish it until years later. I wasn’t a book lover then, but I remember it being my first book to read.

TBQ: Why historicals? What is it about this genre that you love so much?
A: I find myself asking the same question sometimes. With historical romance, I just feel like everything is extra special – the way people fall in love, the rules of society, and most specially, the sex (lol). I feel like everything about historical romance is special because back then, people were very limited at what they can do and who they can marry. They couldn’t even marry out of love, so when I read historical romance and the two people end up together and they’re in love, I think it’s amazing. I’m also fascinated on how boring life was back then! Women spend their days sitting around and knitting or gossiping or singing to each other.

Ah, look at all
the free time they had!
Wish we had some of that...

TBQ: Are there any books that you think a potential historical romance fan HAS to read in order to truly appreciate the genre? Why?
A: Anything from DeeAnne Gist is a must-read as far as historical romance is concerned. I just feel so happy when I read her books. The determination of the leading woman is very admirable. [Oh, putting the books on my list as we speak.. :) ]
Author
DeeAnn Gist

TBQ: If your friend told you she didn't like historical romances, what book would you recommend to her to change her mind?
A: Like I said above, DeeAnne Gist. I know some people might not like the genre because some have explicit sex, but DeeAnne Gist has very clean stories and heartfelt romance.

TBQ: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 books would you take with you? Do you grab these books because of the stories, the covers, the hunky heroes...? All of the above? :)
A: DeeAnne Gist has 4 or 5 books I think. I sound like a fanatic but she really is my favorite. I would grab them because of the story. As far as the cover goes, the female in those dresses are very beautiful (even though you can only see the dress and not their faces). FUN FACT: The woman in the book cover below is her daughter! [That's pretty cool--and I agree, the dresses are all beautiful!]

TBQ: You are co-owner of the blog “Reading on the Wild Side”--can you tell us a little bit about the blog, what you do, and why you started reviewing?
A: Reading on the Wild Side is an adult blog where Kayla and I review romance novels from paranormal to historical to contemporary and even erotica. I am the owner of the blog named after me [Arianne Cruz blog] and I started it to highlight the things I like: beauty, books, entertainment. I partnered with Kayla because I thought it would be a great opportunity to finally explore the genre I equally love as Young Adult but don’t really review in my main blog because of my young readers. Now I have the best of both worlds. Lastly, I don’t really have a good reason why I started reviewing. I just thought it would be a good idea to let people know what I thought of a book. I found that I’ve also met amazing authors this way and became friends with them.

TBQ: Have your reading habits changed any since you started to review?
A: Good question. In a way, it did. Before, I would just read for the pure enjoyment of it. I still do, obviously, but now, I make sure to take notice of the quotes that I enjoyed in a book. That’s my signature – I always include a quote I loved from the book in my reviews. I also had to learn to remember the book I’ve read and the story so I can review it properly. [Very similar to what I do now--finding quotes to add to my list is almost as much fun as reading! lol]

TBQ: I'm always on the lookout for great historical romances (ignore the towering TBR mountain in the corner...*ahem*). What books are you looking forward to reading (new, old, or not yet released)?
A: I don’t really keep up with historical romance authors. I’m basically open to any book. Right now, though, I want to read Lila DiPasqua. I got a little sample of one of her books (Midnight Dance) and it got me so curious, I was left hanging and I want to read more. [I have one of her books, The Princess in His Bed, in my TBR pile, and I can't wait to read it! :) ]

Thanks so much for stopping by today, Arianne! :) Do you have any questions for our readers—something that will spark a good discussion?
A: Thank you for having me! This was fun! I love interviews! Sure, I have a question *wink*

Tell me in the comments:
Do you find it enticing to read about women who were held back in society because of their gender, and then find a man to love them and treat them as equals?

Also, give me some historical romance recommendations!
