[Kame's Review]: "The Cowboy's E-mail Order Bride"

The Cowboy's E-mail Order Bride by Cora Seton
Publisher: One Acre Press (April 25, 2013)
Series: The Cowboy's of Chance Creek, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Ethan Cruz should be mending fences on his Montana ranch, but instead he’s driving to the Chance Creek, Montana, airport – to pick up the bride he didn’t know he had. This latest salvo in his ongoing practical joke battle with his best friend, Rob Matheson, has gone too far, and Ethan plans to send his “bride” right back home, then get busy plotting his revenge. One look at Autumn Leeds changes his mind, however. Perhaps he needs a bride, after all. A breathtakingly beautiful city bride.

Autumn Leeds needs a story – fast – or she’s going to lose her lucrative contract with CityPretty Magazine, so when she sees the crazy video plea for a modern mail-order bride for a cowboy, it sounds like the story of the century. Making a video of her own, she casts herself as the perfect mail-order bride for a rancher, but when she finally reaches Montana, she’s surprised to find Ethan’s the perfect cowboy husband-to-be. Against her better judgment, her plan to keep her handsome groom at arm’s length disintegrates into a night of passion spent in his arms.

Ethan knows he can’t keep playing this game – he has to come clean with Autumn and tell her the truth; about the practical joke and about the state of his ranch. He’s about to lose it all because of the debts his mother racked up before his parents’ deaths. Now his sister, Claire, wants to sell the ranch and collect what little money they can. He’ll be out of a home and a job, and in no shape to support the bride he desperately wants to marry, after all.

Autumn’s in bigger trouble than ever. Not only has she fallen in love with the subject of her expose – she might be carrying his child. If she doesn’t write this article and secure her contract for another year, she’ll lose everything – her career, her apartment, and more importantly, her family’s approval. The only alternative is to stay and marry Ethan. But how can she trust a man she’s just met when she knows too well that men always let you down?

Can a love based on lies last?

Kame's Review:

Ethan is a cowboy down to his core. He has never wanted to do anything other than work on the ranch his family ranch; he hates the electronics of the times, never carries his cell phone and refuses to use a laptop to help with the books. It has been an emotional time for Ethan, his parents were killed in a accident, soon after he learned the ranch he inherited is mortgaged to the hilt, his fiancĂ© left him once she learned of his large debt and his sister who owns half the ranch with him wants to sell and plans never to step foot on the ranch again.  All of that doesn’t make the start of this book the most humiliating day of his life, the fact his friends played a practical joke on him and that he is driving with them to the airport to pick up a e-mail order bride for him makes Ethan want to throttle his friends and run for the hills at the same time.  When he sees Autumn he is stunned by her beauty. Autumn is making a last ditch effort to save her job.  She works in NYC at a magazine and has pitched the idea of an expose about a cowboy who advertised on youtube for an e-mail order bride. When she meets Ethan for the first time she thinks maybe her plans can change.

I really liked Ethan and Autumn’s characters. Individually they were great. Ethan’s burden was believable; however I questioned his shunning of modern day electronics. In my opinion Cora Seton did a fantastic job at showing Autumn’s past and the impressions her family left on her and molded her to the woman who came to the ranch.  There were a few plot points that were a little too tidy for me, namely their instant attraction – yes I read romance books all the times with an instant spark, but in those the sparks leaps from the page, this attraction didn’t even skip for me. A few characters were angry the entire book, one bordering on vindictive and it wore on me.  I wanted Ethan and Autumn to have it out with these characters but it never really happened.

I received this book from the publisher for my honest review; this was the first book in a series.  Ethan’s best friend and sister are the main characters in book 2, I may check it out to see how Ethan and Autumn are doing.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Thanks for the review, Kame! :) It does sound like a unique story line!

Are you a fan of the "instant spark" or not? Do you have a favorite book where this trope worked?

Enjoy!

great review! I do like the sound of this one, but I do like a romance where the spark is kept alive all throughout the story.
