[Pat's Review]: "This Year's Black"

This Year's Black by Avery Flynn
Publisher: Entangled: Ignite (May 27, 2014)
Series: Killer Style, 2
Genre: Romantic Suspense

A fighter since birth, Allegra “Ryder” Falcon would rather trade in her all-black wardrobe for head-to-toe hot pink than let anyone ever see the cracks in her tough exterior. But one night with a stranger changes everything.

Devin Harris may have given up his MMA fighting dreams for high fashion, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t always in control. So when someone embezzles millions under his watch, he isn’t going to let the private investigator working the case go it alone—even if she is the woman who blew him away in bed and then blew him off.

Just when it seems like it couldn’t get any hotter between Ryder and Devin, the case takes them to a tropical paradise where the danger increases. From the catwalk to the pineapple fields, they have to work together to track down the missing millions before the thief finds—and kills—them.

Pat's Review:

We met Tony Falcon and his new wife Sylvie in High Heeled Wonder, Ms. Flynn's previous book about Maltese Security.  In this novel we become better acquainted with Allegra (Ryder) Falcon. She is Tony's sister, with a degree in forensic accounting and has joined Maltese as an operative.

Ryder has been unhappy with the few boring assignments she has been getting, and anxious to get her teeth into something exciting.  She has a "History of musclebound losers with a shaky grasp of employment." The last loser put her in the hospital.  She spends every spare minute in the gym sparring and has become very skillful. She will not be a victim again. Ryder's signature color is black. Pencil skirts, jackets, and blouses, very professional, and very black, including her very high heeled shoes. Tony finally offers her an assignment she feels is right for her. A local well known department store has money disappearing, a lot of it and Ryder is excited for the chance to prove herself to her overprotective brother.

Dylan's Department store is about to participate in a huge merger, and questionable accounting will not help. Ryder meets with the owner George Dylan and his right hand man Devin Harris, who rocks her back on her stiletto heels. This gorgeous, inked, very muscular, former MMA fighter in a tailored suit is the man she had a one night stand with and has been trying to forget ever since.  Devin remembers Ryder very well, especially all the failed attempts at trying to reach her after she rocked his world. They reluctantly agree to work together, and put there personal feelings aside. Not!

I really enjoyed this story. The banter between all the characters is great and Ryder and Devin circling each other is pretty sexy.  There is a lot of action and twists and turns and soon you don't know who to trust.  The location is a beautiful island, but dangerous at every turn. Devin and Ryder both realize there is a lot more than a one night stand involved now.

This can be read as a stand alone, but the first book is such a great read I recommend reading them both.
