[Review]: "A Gentleman in the Street"

A Gentleman in the Street by Alisha Rai
Publisher: Alisha Rai (November 22, 2014)
Genre: Contemporary Erotica

Shameless. That’s what she was.

Billionaire businesswoman Akira Mori can get anything and anyone her heart desires. Anyone, that is, except for a certain aloof author who has been dominating her dreams for over a decade. Accustomed to Jacob Campbell’s stern disapproval, Akira has turned provocation into an art, using every trick in her arsenal to keep the man from guessing the depth of her filthy fantasies.

Shameless. That’s what she made him.

Since the moment the sexy, sultry socialite sidled up to him years ago, there hasn’t been a time when Jacob didn’t crave Akira. But as guardian to his younger siblings, responsibility has controlled his life. Confining his darkest desires to secret, stolen moments maintains his carefully disciplined world…but a cold bed is the price he pays.

A single touch is all it takes for their simmering need to explode. As secrets and fears are stripped away one by one, shame becomes a thing of the past. They find themselves becoming addicted to each other, in bed and out—a frightening prospect for a man just learning to live…and a woman who thinks she doesn’t know how to love.

My Review:

I'm so glad that I listened when everyone on Twitter was telling me to pick up Alisha Rai's A Gentleman in the Streets! To say that I loved this book is putting it mildly.

Akira Mori was partial to a certain kind of man: the kind you fucked raw and dirty until your voice was hoarse and your skin slick with sweat. The location wasn't important – up against a brick wall, in the back of a car, on a kitchen island . . .

Jacob Campbell is not that kind of man.

Bullshit. Every man could be that kind of man. Or at least that was what she wanted to believe, when she was currently eyeing a delightfully sweaty and half-naked Jacob.

Akira Mori is a strong heroine. Really! She doesn't take shit from anyone, she lives her life the way she wants. Others call her a bitch, or a slut. For the most part, she's developed a tough skin and these words hold no power over her anymore. Her motto is “Steel in your backbone, ice in your veins.” And that's how the world sees her. But Jacob . . . Oh, Jacob sees that there's so much more beneath her tough surface. And he wants it all!

She's not the type. She's not like you, was what he meant. Men, so dumb. So consumed with classifying women into types to satisfy their own sense of comfort.

Suddenly, Akira hoped young Kati was engaging in all sorts of debauchery this weekend with her brother gone. Don't be a type, girl.

Jacob Campbell is definitely a swoon worthy hero. At first, Akira's suggestions and innuendos make him blush, but before long he's showing her his inner self, too – and it's dirty. *happy sigh* He's also a very caring man, all but raising his younger brothers and sister from a young age. A sexy, responsible, dirty talker – who can resist that combination?

These two try to stay away from one another. Of course, their chemistry is too strong, and soon this happens:

His lips slammed down on hers and cut off her words.

For a split second, she could only sit, stunned, as his mouth moved on hers. What. The. Fuck.

Had she ever been kissed like this? Had he ever kissed like this? Because he kissed her like he hadn't kissed a woman in forty years, like she was the last woman on earth. He kissed her like there would be no beginning or end without her.

He kissed her like he . . . wanted her.

Fucking. Hot.

*sigh* Fucking hot, indeed! :)

Unable to resist, she glanced at the writing. You're more like the hero.

She bit her lip to keep from smiling. “Because I'm brilliant, aggressive, and sexually accomplished?”

His face was serious. “Yeah. And because you could probably save the world, if you were wearing the right shoes.”

It could have been so easy for Rai to take these two characters and turn them into stereotypes. But she didn't. She created strong characters with depth and reasons for being the way they are. When you think you know everything about Jacob and Akira, Rai unveils another layer.

“I know you're dirty. I want you in the shower so I can make you filthy.”

Don't mind her. That was just her knees going weak.

I loved every minute of A Gentleman in the Street. Rai has created a sexy romance between two amazing characters, and I never wanted it to end. I will definitely be reading Alisha Rai again, and this book is going on my favorites list for future rereading. Again and again and again.

:) I love when authors make heroines like this. We need more of them, both in fiction and IRL. :D

If you're looking for another such heroine, I have a review for Victoria Dahl's Flirting with Disaster going up late Jan. Loved the book, and the heroine, like all of Dahl's heroines, is awesome and brazen. :D

Oh yes, Victoria Dahl! I've had her on the list. I didn't realize the heroines were similar. Another good reason.

*nods* Her heroines are definitely in control of their sexuality. And the heroes are yummy. And the chemistry is amazing. And the banter is witty. And . . . well, trust me. Highly recommend her books! :D
