[ARC Review]: "Getting Him Back"

Getting Him Back by K.A. Mitchell
Publisher: Carina Press (February 15, 2016)
Series: Ethan and Wyatt, 1
Genre: New Adult M/M Romance

An unexpected fresh start leads to an unlikely-but-absolutely-perfect pairing in this male/male new-adult novel from bestselling gay romance author K.A. Mitchell

Ethan may have followed his high school sweetheart to college only to get dumped his first day there, but he's not going to let that stop him from exploring all his new life has to offer. Sex-only hookups, his photography, new friends and a campus-wide game of zombies vs humans all help keep his mind off his broken heart and move him toward building a new, better life without his ex.

And then there's Wyatt. Mysterious, grouchy—hot. And possibly not gay. But Ethan's not going to let that stand in the way of figuring out what makes Wyatt tick. New college goal? Get Wyatt into bed and into Ethan's life.

Step one: arrange a "tutoring" date. Step two: "accidentally" bump into Wyatt as often as possible. Step three: explore the sexy body under that ever-present hoodie. And when their friendship deepens into something neither of them expect, convince Wyatt he's not just a pity fling or a one-time hookup, but that Ethan is in it for the long haul.

My Review:

I didn't realize that a smile from someone who acted like they didn't know how to meant a lot more than one from someone who smiled at everyone.

Getting Him Back was a quick, solid read. There's a bit of angst and some hot sex, which is always a good combination. But it fell short of making it to my favorites list.

My biggest problem was with Ethan's naive and immature actions for the first third (or maybe even more) of the book. He's young, sure, but his lack of maturity bothered me. I personally have a low tolerance for immaturity, both IRL and in the books I read, so realize that this is entirely my own view on his character.

Once Ethan started to wise up and move on from his ex, I enjoyed the remaining parts of the book a lot more. Ethan and Wyatt were good together, and great in the bedroom. :) I mean, really great. This is just a tease:

One of my hands was in his hair before I realized what I was doing.

I pulled on his hair and the sound he made wasn’t like any complaint I’d ever heard so I did it again, first twisting his head, then using my other hand under his chest to life him up and over my thighs, so he was practically in my lap, suspended on my dick.

“Oh, fuck.” He breathed it out, slowing for a moment, his muscles shifting, grabbing at my dick in a brand-new set of ways. I held on to him so I could hold myself back from going at him like a jackhammer. He shifted again, and my teeth sank into his shoulder as I fought back a scream. So much sensation, from the slam of my heart in my chest to the ache in my balls and the hot, slick texture all around my dick.

The need to fuck hammered through me. It burned in my thighs and my hips and my dick, but I sucked up a hickey on his neck and waited. He rocked, and I drove up. His body reacted, his breath pushed out of his body by my cock. It drove me higher, drunk on sex. With Wyatt.

My only other complaint is about the ending; it's a bit rushed and things are wrapped up a bit too neatly. Apparently part two of their story will be out later this year and I'm curious where the story will go. I liked these two enough that I'm putting it on my list.

The way he let me in when he worked so hard to lock everyone else out made me hyperaware, craving proof that I was making it worth it for him.

Overall a good read if you're looking for a new adult M/M and don't mind that it will be told in two parts.

3 1/2 STARS!
