[Author Interview]: Angela Evans

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, ANGELA! :)

As a child Angela remembers her mother telling friends that Angela would read anything she could get her hands on, even the back of the cereal box. That changed when she discovered romance novels as a teenager, secretly reading her mother’s entire collection of Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and being amazed at how captivating the stories were. She knew that writing romance novels was what she wanted to do for a living.

She has recently finished her soon to be published novel Hiding in Plain Sight and begun writing the second book in the series. She is also a member of Romance Writers of America (RWA) as well as her local chapter and she enjoys being active in both.

Angela lives in Southern Illinois where she is living her own happily ever after with her husband of over 20 years, their two children, a very spoiled white german shepherd and two equally spoiled cats. When she’s not writing she loves reading, cooking, and photography.

Where to Find Angela:

The_Book_Queen: Hi Angela! Let’s start off with a fun question: tell us 3 unique/wacky/fun things about yourself.

Angela: 3 Wacky fun things, let me think…my family thinks it’s wacky that I will dig through the silverware drawer so that I can use a particular spoon because I like the shape of it better than the others. I think a Sunday afternoon nap is the most luxurious and underappreciate thing in the world. I am just after four years older than my husband, who I have been married to for 21 years.

TBQ: I'm all for Sunday naps. Aww, 21 years is awesome, congrats!

Have you always been interested in writing? Also, what is it that you love about writing in the romance genre?

A: I have always been interested in writing, for as long as I could remember. When I realized that people created stories and characters for their careers, I was enthralled. It is all I have ever wanted to do. I love the way a certain word choice can change the entire feeling of a story, or a scene. For me writing is the biggest adrenaline rush there is.

TBQ: Your debut release, Hiding in Plain Sight, came out earlier this month. Can you tell us a little bit about this book, and why readers are going to love it?

A: Hiding in Plain Sight is a story of a woman named Kierra who suffers an enormous trauma at the age of sixteen, and as a result closes herself off from the world. She tries her best to disappear and avoid any attention at all in an effort to control the panic attacks she experiences. After ten years she decides to try and regain some control over her own life and returns to the small town where the trauma occurred. When she gets to town she discovers many surprises, despite the fact that the quaint small town looks unchanged to her at first. Her high school boyfriend, Bryan, is now the town sheriff, and their chemistry is one of the things that is definitely still the same. Her stepfather, the man who killed her family, is not dead as she has thought for the last ten years, but instead he is hiding in town and immediately starts terrorizing her when she returns. In the end Kierra learns that she is actually a lot stronger than she ever thought she was, and that the best things in life happen when she lets down her guard and trusts again.

TBQ: Ooh!

Why do Bryan and Kierra belong together?

A: Kierra and Bryan belong together because Bryan sees beyond all of Kierra’s defenses and no matter how much she tries to disguise her inner light and spark he knows it’s still there. He’s the only person who could persuade her to be herself again and let down all of those barriers.

TBQ: In 5 words or less, describe Kierra for us. And let's not forget Bryan -- what's he like?

A: Kierra in five words is alone and scared at the beginning and strong, beautiful and confident at the end. Bryan is a protector, a defender, strong, confident and, of course, gorgeous!

TBQ: Do you have a favorite part from Hiding in Plain Sight?

A: I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say my favorite part is where Kierra strips away all of her defenses and comes out of hiding because she wants to be as beautiful as Bryan makes her feel. Readers who have finished the book will know exactly which scene I mean!

TBQ: Sounds like the perfect scene! :)

I know we all hate this question, author and reader alike. :) But I have to ask anyway: What are a few of your all-time favorite books and/or authors?

A: My favorite book is usually the last one I read. Which for me is Barefoot with a Bodyguard by Roxanne St. Claire. I just re-read the book because the next book is due soon (it will be out before this post is live).

TBQ: I don't believe I've read any of her books. I need to change that!

We've all fallen for a hero (or two, or three, or....ahem).  Tell us one hero that you've fallen for—who is he and what drew you to him?

A: I’m currently in love with the hero in the book I’m writing! He’s giving he fits, because he doesn’t seem to want to cooperate, but darn it I love him anyway!

TBQ: Haha. The best ones usually put up the biggest fight with the author, yes? :)

What's next-- Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming releases or WIP?

A: I’m currently writing the second book in the Hidden Dangers series which will feature Bryan’s sister Natalie and a new man in her life. Danger has yet again returned to Briarview!

SPEED ROUND:

A day on a secluded island OR a day at the spa? Island!

Reading a spicy romance novel OR a sweet “my-heart-skips-a-beat” one? Spicy

Sexy highlander or handsome English lord? Neither! Give me a sexy contemporary hero, cop, soldier, Navy SEAL! [All great alternative choices; I approve!]

Hot summer days OR cold winter nights? Summer

If you could live anywhere, where would your dream house be? I’ve never lived anywhere but Southern Illinois, but I’d love to have a house in the middle of nowhere with land all around.

Cover Lover OR Blurb Fan? Blurb.

Steamy Novella OR Sweet Novel? (aka, Quickie or Slow Build Up?) Novel. I never find a Novella satisfying.

Quick—name the one food that you cannot live without! CHOCOLATE! [YESSSSSS!]

And finally, what’s the last book that you read and can’t stop recommending?

I already gave this one away, Barefoot with a Bodyguard is the last I read at the time of this interview.

TBQ: Thanks so much for stopping by, Angela, and please know that you are welcome back anytime! Do you have any questions for our readers—something to spark a good discussion? :)

Angela: I would love your readers to tell me what they love in a good romance—what elements are important to you? Steamy? Suspense? Sweet? A hot hero? A smart heroine?

Hiding in Plain Sight by Angela Evans
Publisher: Evernight Publishing (February 11, 2016)
Series: Hidden Dangers, 1
Genre: Romantic Suspense

"...breathtaking romantic suspense!" Roxanne St. Claire, New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author

Kierra Centerand was once vivacious and outgoing, but that all changed the night her stepfather killed her family in an explosion that authorities wrote off as an accident. Now, ten years later, Kierra has returned to the small town of Briarview to find answers, confront her demons, and see if she can finally move on with her life. Not much has changed, Briarview is still the quaint, charming, small town Kierra left behind. Only now her high school boyfriend, Bryan, is the sheriff, and her stepfather is somewhere in the town, hiding in plain sight.

When Bryan Donaldson sees Kierra again for the first time, he is surprised—she’s no longer the fun blonde he remembers, but rather she’s shy, prone to panic attacks, and hiding from the world. When Kierra’s stepfather starts making threats, Bryan is determined to keep her safe in his arms, and in his bed, for life.
