Whatcha Reading? (45)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and we will share our brief thoughts on books that we read during the previous week but will not be reviewing.

May 1st - 7th:

-- Her Favorite Temptation by Sarah Mayberry --

Oh, how I love Mayberry's writing. I'm not sure why I let this one sit on my Kindle for so long. I read book 2 (review) when it released in 2013 and loved it. So why the hell did I wait 3 years to read Leah's book?! *sigh*

Anyway, glad that I picked it up this weekend, it was truly a perfect read. I loved watching these two become friends, then lovers, then something more. I loved the fun scenes and quotes sprinkled throughout. I loved the great tension and build up, too, even more, I think, then the actual sex scenes (which were fine, don't get me wrong!). All in all, definitely recommend this duology, as well as Mayberry's books in general. 4 STARS

Favorite quote:

"This is the problem with being a good girl all your life," she said hopelessly. "Guilt, an overactive worry gland and a face that can apparently be read like a book."

-- Spiral of Need by Suzanne Wright --

Not my favorite from Wright as it was a bit of a slow start for me to really get into the story. But as always Wright delivers a hot shifter book with a strong heroine that doesn't take shit from her Very Alpha-y mate. Her heroines always have tons of sarcastic, smart ass responses and a lot of grit, which is fun to read. The sex is very hot. There's a lot of mention of the characters from the previous series, which I'm always a fan of. (Related: I need Dominic to get a story. His cheesy pick up lines always make me groan/laugh right along with the rest of the pack.)

I didn't read book 4 of the previous series, so I feel like I might have missed some things, but I can't say I was "WTF?" lost. Even though this is the first book in this series, I'd say you'd probably be best reading at least part of the Phoenix Pack series first to get a feel for this world and the packs. 3 1/2 STARS

-- Spanish Lessons by Jessica Peterson --

This was a roller coaster read for me -- and I don't mean that in a good way this time.

Right off the bat, I had issues with Vivian's decision to study abroad in Spain, where her courses would be done entirely in Spanish only, even though she CANNOT SPEAK SPANISH FOR SHIT.

I know this is NA and Vivian's only 20, but she and her friends were far too immature for my taste. And don't even get me started on the overly dramatic (and annoying) shit when Vivian's BFF has a thing for Rafa and therefore sees Vivian as betraying their friendship by being with him. (FYI, Vivian and Rafa were already flirting when the BFF met him, and Rafa never once showed any interest in anyone but Vivian.) So much UGH.

I must admit though, the sex scenes (which don't show up until well past the 50% mark) were great, very hot. But great sex is, sadly, not enough.

For me, this book was too inconsistent in that I only really liked one or two things about it while finding much of the book either annoying or meh.

Will I try another book by Peterson? Maybe, but I'm not feeling the need to rush out and buy the sequel. 3 STARS
