[Pat's Review]: "At Any Cost"

At Any Cost by Mandy Baxter
Publisher: Zebra (May 31, 2016)
Series: U.S. Marshals, 4
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Fast, cunning, and driven, he'll do whatever it takes to nail the most violent federal perps. But she is the one danger he'll never see coming…

She can't remember when she wasn't afraid. She can't go to the police. And "Olivia Gallagher" is only a day away from fleeing her Idaho wilderness life before biker gang leader Joel Meecum finally catches up with her. So keeping her rugged new neighbor at arm's length is the only safe play. Until Livy can't resist one last hungry chance to feel alive…

For U.S. Marshal Nick Brady, taking his vacation next door to Meecum's ex-girlfriend seemed the smartest way to find him. But suddenly, nothing is making sense. How could this feisty, straight-talking brunette ever get mixed up with Meecum's brutal crew? And why is he breaking his oath and getting so close that all he wants is to keep her safe? Now as the clock ticks, Nick and Livy's only chance at escape may be the one they can't survive…

Pat's Review:

Heart pounding, romantic, with an intense U.S. Marshall on a mission, and a young woman who only wants to escape her past.

U.S. Marshall Nick Brody is on a "forced leave" for a month after being a little too anxious to escape the drudgery of his first assignment, escorting criminals to court. He is a former SWAT officer, and needs action, especially on a case he is very interested in. He is trying to find Jack Meechum, ex-president of Black Death MC.  A killer, drug dealer and on the run for the last four years even though he is on the top 15 Most Wanted list. Last know address of Meechum's former girlfriend, Kari Hanson, is McCall, Idaho. Seems like a great place to take leave time.

She's been running for so long she couldn't remember what it felt like not to be afraid.

Livy Gallagher has been on the run for four years. She goes to sleep afraid and works looking over her shoulder. Livy (formerly Kari) is a ski instructor at a local resort, has made a few friends, and owns a cat named Simon. She can't let her guard down, but when a tall, dark and handsome man moves into the house next door and helps her shovel out her car after a snowstorm, she has feelings she thought long forgotten. They are attracted to each other, become friends and eventually lovers. Nick is going against all the rules of the Marshall service, not to mention truly falling for this beautiful woman, and vowing to protect her.

There are lies, betrayals and life threatening danger involved. A very enjoyable romantic suspense read.
