Whatcha Reading? (92)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

Mar 26th - April 1st:

Beyond Ruin by Kit Rocha
Kindle
Goodreads

Rating = 4 1/2 Stars

  • Hello foursome!
    • Best. Foursome. Ever.
    • Okay, yes, I'm biased because it's also the ONLY committed foursome I've read but I don't care, it's still the best.
    • MMFF or is it MFMF or FFMM or whatever, they all four played equally so just throw all the letters together
  • Things are heating up in the sectors, plot is moving as well as the dirty-smutty-goodness -- and romance! -- of these four
  • If pressed, my only complaint is I didn't feel like I knew these four *as much* as I would have loved; their characters weren't skimped over, in any way, but I think there was room for that little bit more to push it even closer to perfection

Beyond Ecstasy by Kit Rocha
Kindle
Goodreads

Rating = 4 Stars

  • More like 4 - 4 1/2 because it's Kit Rocha, dammit, and I still loved it
  • Didn't get quite as invested in these two -- again, by that I just mean on a scale of "How deep were you invested in the couple?" I'd still say 8.5 out of 10; so high, just not AS high as other couples in the series
  • Loved that Hawk was a newbie Dom who had to find himself and get some control and training
    • Loved the hot scene with Gia as the teacher for him (Jeni was there, too, it was a bit of a menage, though most it was Hawke/Jeni doing things)
  • Shit's really starting to fly, my heart was constantly beating out of control by the last 30% or so because of everything that started happening.
  • As usual, damn hot and high emotions and action

  • Nessa and Ryder
    • Liquor princess for the O'Kanes
    • Sector 5 leader and spy/soldier trained from childhood to lead the rebellion and war against Eden
  • I have so many feels from this book and I won't get into 99% of it because I'm not spoiling anything but OMFG I was crying more than once and I don't cry.
  • Ryder's intensity and focus -- yes, in the bedroom! -- was off-the-charts hot and I loved every minute of it
  • Their romance and long, hard road to a HEA was too
  • And the series plot arc . . . Oh, damn, yes, this was the end of holding off Eden -- full battle was waged in this one and because it's war, it's not easy or pretty or happy. That's all I'm saying.
  • Yes, every couple from previous books is okay in the end, and I knew they would because Rocha doesn't fuck with HEAs -- but even trusting them, the stakes and emotions were just so high here that there's no telling my rational brain to calm down, everything's going to be okay by the last page
  • If you're not reading this series yet, start it. There's no explaining these books, you have to experience them. IN ORDER THO!
  • I'll be starting Ashwin -- spin-off from this series -- in the next week or so. Since I took all this week to binge catch up here, I'm behind on ARC reading again. I REGRET NOTHING. O'Kane For Life. Always.

Stay With Me by J. Lynn

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Audio
Goodreads
Audiobook from Overdrive
Narrators = Sophie Eastlake
Narration rating = 4 Stars
Rating = 3 1/2 Stars

  • Calla is in nursing school
    • Has a shitty past, shitty mother, scars from a fire -- basically all kinds of issues
  • Jax was a Marine, is now a bar tender
    • Works (....) at her mother's bar
  • She heads back home trying to find her mom and the money she stole from her savings account
    • The mom took off -- she's involved in some BIG drug shit, and things spiral down from there as the drug lords decided that if the mom's gone, they'll take it out on Calla instead
  • I have mixed feelings about this one
    • There were plenty of times when the romance itself was good -- sweet, romantic, cute, and sexy as hell
    • But there was a lot about the story and plot and characters that either made me roll my eyes for a moment or made me want to outright smack some people
      • Still, even the "bad" wasn't the worst -- I'd give those parts 3 stars, and the good parts a solid 4
  • Didn't like the hero and his lack of action while his ex hook up was stirring shit up
    • Didn't like that he kept a pretty big secret from Calla until the very end, either
  • But, like I said, when it was good, it was good, and overall I still liked this one
  • Will be finishing the series, the next couple has me curious (they had a one night stand and have been avoiding each other since)
  • Narration was good, I'd listen to her again
