Whatcha Reading? (99)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

May 14th - 20th:

When the Duke Returns by Eloisa James

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Rating = 3 1/2 Stars

  • This was picked from my TBR pile poll
    • It was nice to return to James -- and this series -- as it's been a while
    • But man, getting into a print book again was hard! My hands were not used to the workout. Plus harder to share quotes. :P
  • These two were married by proxy when she was in her teens and he in his early 20s.
    • He's been off exploring the world ever since, has never came back to consummate their marriage
      • They are both virgins
        • Which means their first scene together was Double Virgin Awkward, quick and a let down for Isidore, but they get the hang of it after that. :)
  • Overall: Liked this one, it was a solid read, though not my favorite from James
  • Definitely a lot of fun interactions/quotes, which I shared on this Twitter thread

Buns by Alice Clayton

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Releases Tuesday
Rating = 4 1/2 Stars
May Royal Pick

  • Heroine works to rebrand hotels/inns/the like
    • She's GREAT at her job, and her newest project could make her partner if she does it right
  • Hero is the son of the resort owner who hired her
    • Hero will be owner soon when the father steps down
    • Did I mention Archie is a ginger, has freckles, AND glasses? And he's hot as hell, very much a controlled man . . . until he loses that control with Clara
  • Great dynamics and banter and tension and GAH, loved these two together
    • So many fun interactions/scenes
    • NO, really, SO MANY
  • Fun, sexy, and romantic read, my favorite in this series

Every Little Thing by Samantha Young

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Audio
Goodreads
Audiobook from Overdrive
Narrators = Ted Branson, Angelica Lee
Narration rating = 3 1/2 Stars
Rating = 1 1/2 Stars

  • This started out meh for me but as it went on, my rating went down and my rage went up
  • Biggest problem: the romance is a let down
    • The two spend almost ZERO time together, in any capacity, in the first 70% of the book, besides one night of (hot) fucking
    • By their second (also hot) fuck around the 75-80% mark, suddenly hero is declaring his love for her
    • We don't see them falling for each other, nothing --- just 2 fucks and BAM, they're in love
      • Couldn't believe the line of "Oh, we'd been dancing around each other for 4 years" because
        • That wasn't shown either and if you're going to use that background to build on, I NEED TO SEE IT
        • More important, she's been in a relationship for the last 10, breaking up at the start of this book when he cheated on her, and hero has been fucking every woman he can for the last 4 years he's been in town
          • NO NO NO none of that helps to build their insta-love relationship, especially so late into the book!
      • And the proposal at the end only sealed my "FFS, where's the romance?" eyeroll
  • Best thing about the book? The sex scenes are hot, but that's not enough to carry the book or make me believe in their love
  • Didn't really like either of them
    • She felt immature to me, in particular
    • Story had a NA feel . . .but both are in their 30s. o.O
  • Don't even get me started on the heroine's shitty bitch of a sister and the shit she brings in because that STILL makes my blood boil and I can't
    • Worse, it's written off as "But she's your sister, she doesn't hate you, she's just a brat and you should forgive her because it's 'not that bad'"
  • One last complain -- the writing/POV
    • Heroine's chapters = 1st POV
    • Hero's chapters = 3rd POV
    • WHY WHY WHY Don't do this, at least not in a romance, it doesn't flow well, gives an unbalanced view of the two's voices
  • I liked book 1, and have enjoyed previous from this author, but this one just made me pissed and disappointed me
    • Might not continue the series.
      • Originally was looking forward to the bookstore owner's story but now I'm not so sure considering how her hero has been acting in book 1 and 2...

From Duke to Dawn by Eva Leigh

Releases May 30th

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Rating = 3 Stars

  • Kind-of second chance (they had a one night stand 2 years before)
  • Duke + con artist/swindler heroine
  • Hot chemistry, some decent banter
  • Enjoyed hero's friends, curious about one of them and their planned heroine
  • But overall, this one was kind of "meh" for me
    • Didn't hate, liked quite a lot of the book, but was a bit bored/underwhelmed by the book

Almost caught up with the series, finally -- I already have the next book on my phone (audiobook). I'm loving Aden, and Zaira is such a different heroine, too.

This week's #TBQsTBR poll winner. It's been years since I read the previous books, which I loved.
Almost done with this one. Done -- this one was a disappointment for me, 2 Stars.

Starting this one next, releases on June 1st. It is her first M/F title; I already love her M/M books.

So what are YOU currently reading?

Enjoy!
