Whatcha Reading? (106)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

July 2nd - 8th

Heart of the Steal by Avon Gale and Roan Parrish

Releases Tuesday!
Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads

Rating = 4 Stars

  • FBI agent -- Arts Crime division
    • Very by-the-book
  • Wealthy Southern gentleman
    • A bit older
      • Also, long hair
    • Bi hero
    • Might occasionally have a thing about stealing art (not to sell but to get back at idiots)
  • Hot together -- like, super hot
  • Also ridiculously sweet/charming together, too
  • For the most part, I really, really enjoyed this one -- definitely recommend!
    • The only thing keeping me from giving it a higher rating -- I felt like Vaughn was too step-in-and-take-charge, even though he only did it from a good place, and was never an alpha ass or anything
    • Also, felt like I needed a bit more from both characters
  • Definitely looking forward to whatever these two have planned next; I hear it's going to be a series....

Just Like Heaven by Julia Quinn

Audiobook from Overdrive
Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Narrator = Rosalyn Landor
Narration rating = 4 Stars
Rating = 3 1/2 Stars

  • They grew up together
    • He's her older brother's best friend
  • Obviously drifted apart as they grew up, and now that they're adults out in society
  • Includes a good portion of time when he's fallen ill and she's taking care of him
    • I have such a weakness for this theme in romances!
  • Enjoyable read -- or rather, listen (especially because Landor is excellent as a narrator for HRs!)
  • I did feel like the romance was a bit . . . lacking though
    • Takes a loooooong time for the suddenly "Oh, I love you!" moment (like, nearly 85%) and while yes, they had their somewhat friendship off and on for years, I still didn't SEE any sort of growth in the relationship until it was suddenly talk of marriage
      • Ending was wrapped up far too quick and suddenly it's a one year later epilogue
  • Still, this was a charming, easy (not complicated or angsty, etc) read and I definitely had a good time with it, but I was left wanting more from the romance itself

Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai

Releases July 25th!

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Rating = 5 Stars
July Royal Pick

I won't go into details since I hope to have a review up next week (Friday, probably?). But this was soooo good. Angsty and sexy and just, gah, so good!

I need book 2. Like, yesterday, dammit!

Dark Side of the Moon by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Audiobook from Overdrive
Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Audio
Goodread
Narration rating = 1 Star
Rating = 1 Star

First off -- THIS IS ABRIDGED AND IT WAS NOT CLEARLY MARKED AS SUCH. So that was a fucking rude surprise to find out after, oh, 3 hours of listening, with a niggling thought in the back of my mind that things were hella fucking choppy and surely Kenyon wasn't that bad in previous books? Then I hit the sex scene -- or should I say, fade to black, which I know she doesn't do. Checked the audiobook's detail page and sure enough, there at the bottom, hidden, is the worst word in the world: ABRIDGED.

So that alone had me so damn pissed off. First that they made it abridged, then that they didn't mark it as such CLEARLY, and then the obvious fact that it jumped around so much, I missed out on more than half the story. I can't even really rate the story itself because I didn't get very much of it!

On top of that, the narrator was horrible. Annoying character voices, read the sentences like a computerized voice would -- ugh, no, just no. So now I'll have to eventually go back and read this one in ebook to understand what the fuck was going on, and when I continue catching up on the series, I'm not doing it in audio. Even if the others ARE unabridged -- like every fucking audiobook SHOULD BE -- if this is the narrator for them all? Nope, pass pass pass.

This week's #TBQsTBR pick. I'm behind on starting it.

Remember, I do a new TBR poll every Sunday on my Twitter. :)

I usually don't like reading in the same romance sub-genre for my book and audiobook at the same time but oh well.

So what are YOU currently reading?

Enjoy!

Until Next Time,
