Better Than Perfect (#1) -- Kame

Hunter took over as managing partner for the San Francisco Goliaths baseball team when her father passed away at the start of the season. She is a woman in a man's profession and wants to earn their respect. She acquires Marco Santiago in a trade; and is convinced he is what her team needs to make it to the World Series; but it seems he might be just what her heart ordered too.
Hunter knows her baseball. I am a baseball Mom and I thought Hunter's character was very believable. I liked her alot and she is the character that kept me reading. Marco was a little flat for me as a character; I wanted him to be more. Marco just seemed to be going through the motions never really embracing the many opportunities he had. He talked of the better life he wanted to give his mother but really it was never shown until the end. He was a character of words but very few actions and emotions.
One good thing about a baseball book you know the timeline of the plot; you can't extend the season. My favorite scene was one between Hunter and a reporter where she holds her own and shows her baseball knowledge. And that baseball understanding was a highlight for me; as the romance was secondary. Sadly I didn't feel a romantic connection - no real AWWW moment. Some things seemed forced and in a way unnecessary; just added in not really moving the story along or filling in any holes for me.
This book felt like a bridge to me; from Book 1 to Book 2. I hope that is the case as Bryce really intrigues me as a character (I would also like to see more of Johnny and Alice!)

Ah, I hate it when I can't connect with a character. Glad the rest of the story offered something worthwhile.
