Whatcha Reading? (54)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

July 3rd - 9th:

TBQ:

-- MacRieve by Kresley Cole -- [Audiobook]

First off, I love Cole's IAD series. Yes, I'm behind on it now, but I started reading it soon after book 1 released back in 2006. (Damn, has it been that long?!) I can't recommend this series enough, as Cole does such a wonderful job with unique world building and story arc and snark and wit and heat and just everything.

The books are fantastic on their own, but on audio, Robert Petkoff does such a perfect job with the narration, adding to the overall enjoyment even more. Seriously, his voice is not only amazing to listen to (I dare you to zone out -- it's impossible!) but he puts so much emotion and honest story-telling into his work that the books come alive even more. He gives all the characters their own voices and accents (his Scottish accent in particular is just . . .GAH. Yes, please!), he puts emotion in where it needs to be, and turns it into a complete listening experience that you don't want to miss.

And that was the case with MacRieve. I already felt all the feels for MacRieve and his tortured past, but combined with Petkoff's performance, I was just about in feels-overload quite often.

I want to point out that yes, MacRieve was an ass to Chloe for a long time, but I thought that he had valid reasons for his knee-jerk reaction to her, considering his past, and that he redeemed himself before the end. I think that says a lot about Cole's writing and my love for this series. If I'd read a MacRieve-like hero in another book from another author, I don't believe I would have still fallen so completely for him, but Cole just made it work. 5 STARS For both the story and narration!

Favorite quotes:

He was so domineering. And a dirty talker. Apparently, she liked both. A lot.

Me too, Chloe. Me too. *sigh*

-- Inescapable by Joss Woods --

An enjoyable enough read, I really don't have any complaints about it. However, I found myself putting it down for long periods of time, and it took me 4 days to read 200 pages. I'll have a review up July 13th. 3 1/2 STARS

-- His Royal Secret by Lilah Pace --

Such a beautiful, sexy, at times emotional read. There's true conflict -- internal and external -- but Pace handles it all so well. It's part one of a duology, but the ending is a complete HFN and they are together as it ends, so don't worry about cliffhangers. Cannot wait for August (book 2)! Full review will go up July 14th. 4 1/2 STARS
