Jen's Review:

Remember that movie Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock? After basically escaping death 539 times, the two characters in the movie share a supersexy kiss while also warning each other that “relationships based on intense experiences never work.” I swear, Rebekah Weatherspoon must be cackling, because she totally demolishes that idea with her latest novel, Haven: Beards and Bondage. This book has, I am not kidding, the most propulsively action-packed and intense opening scene I have ever read in a romance. Shep Olsen is turning in for the night in his quiet, mountain home in northern California when he hears a woman shouting for help outside. She and her brother have been attacked by a pair of killers and she’s trying to get away to safety. Although the violence happens off page, it still felt like someone had put an AED to my chest while my heart was already beating.

After taking a few deep breaths after that opening, we get the introduction to the two characters. Shep is a small-town guy with kinky needs that he fulfills on a yearly trip to LA. Claudia is a buyer for a department store who lives in Manhattan. The connection they have is so intense after what they experienced, but they are separated by geography and trauma. I appreciated that Rebekah Weatherspoon gave both Claudia and Shep months to work on overcoming the events of that night. Eventually, they come back together and agree to a week of sex in order to explore the chemistry between them.

Here’s the thing, before they have sex, Shep and Claudia have a frank and explicit discussion about what they want, what they are willing to do, and where their boundaries are. And even though I’ve seen that before, there was something so sexy about all the conversations between these two. It didn’t feel mechanical or one-sided, it was something they were building together. Rebekah Weatherspoon shows that they are equal partners in the relationship even if one is dominant and one is submissive. It’s delicious.

If I were going to classify Haven, I’d definitely call it erotica rather than romance. Not only because the sex is amazingly, explicitly dirty, but also because the sex itself is a big part of the healing process for both characters. There’s part of me that wished for a little more about the emotional journey for each character when they were apart, but taking the book on its own merits, Haven is a terrific read for any erotica fan...and the sequel, starring Claudia’s friend Liz, comes out August 29th!
