Lillie's Review: Storm Echo

Storm Echo
by Nalini Singh
Publisher: Berkley (August 9, 2022)
Series: Psy-Changeling Trinity, 6
Genre: Paranormal Romance (M/F)

NYT bestselling author Nalini Singh takes us into the hearts of two fractured people in a world on the brink of a psychic Armageddon . . .

Silence has fallen. The Psy are free to feel emotion. Free to love. But Silence was never a prison for Ivan Mercant. The biggest threat to his future lies dormant in his brain—a psychic monster that wants only to feed. And now, the brutal leash he’s kept on that monster is slipping. He prepared for this day, for the end of Ivan Mercant . . . but that was before he met Lei.

As primal as she is human, this wild changeling brings color into his life, laughter to his soul. Then the dream shatters in a rain of blood, in silent bodies in the snow. Lei is gone. Vanished without a trace . . . until he meets strangely familiar eyes across a busy San Francisco street.

Soleil Bijoux Garcia is a healer who has lost everything. She exists in a world of desolate aloneness . . . till the day she finds herself face-to-face with a lethal stranger. The animal who is her other half knows this man, but her memories are tattered fragments. Sorrow and a need for vengeance are all that drive her. Her mission? To kill the alpha of the DarkRiver leopard pack.

But fate has other plans. Soon, a deadly soldier who believes himself a monster and a broken healer might be all that stand between life and death for the entire Psy race.

But Canto is also an anchor, part of a secretive designation whose task it is to stabilize the PsyNet. Now that critical psychic network is dying, threatening to collapse and kill the entire Psy race with it.

To save those he loves, Canto needs the help of a woman bound to him by a dark past neither has been able to forget. A woman who is the most powerful anchor of them all: Payal Rao. Series: Loose Ends, 2
Genre: Contemporary Romance (Queer, M/F)

She just wanted to claim her inheritance. What she got was a husband…

Xeni Everly-Wilkins has ten days to clean out her recently departed aunt’s massive colonial in Upstate New York. With the feud between her mom and her sisters still raging even in death, she knows this will be no easy task, but when the will is read Xeni quickly discovers the decades old drama between the former R&B singers is just the tip of the iceberg. The Secrets, lies, and a crap ton of cash spilled on her lawyer’s conference room table all come with terms and conditions. Xeni must marry before she can claim the estate that will set her up for life and her aunt has just the groom in mind. The ruggedly handsome and deliciously thicc Scotsman who showed up at her aunt’s memorial, bagpipes at the ready.

When his dear friend and mentor Sable Everly passed away, Mason McInroy knew she would leave a sizable hole in his heart. He never imagined she’d leave him more than enough money to settle the debt that’s keeping him from returning home to Scotland. He also never imagined that Sable would use her dying breaths to play match-maker, trapping Mason and her beautiful niece in a marriage scheme that comes with more complications than either of them need.

With no choice but to say I do, the unlikely pair try to make the best of a messy situation. They had no plans to actually fall in love.

**This is a stand alone romance that can be read along with RAFE: A Buff Male Nanny. It features a woman sick to death of her family’s sh*t and a plus-size Scotsman who just wants to make sweet, sweet music. And love.**

It’s love. Trust me.

Sarah's Review: Work For It

Work for It by Talia Hibbert
Publisher: Nixon House (September 3, 2019)
Series: Just For Him, 4
Genre: Contemporary Romance (Queer, M/M)
Dual 1st POV

Between men like us, trust doesn't come easy.

In this village, I’m an outcast: Griffin Everett, the scowling giant who prefers plants to people. Then I meet Keynes, a stranger from the city who’s everything I’m not: sharp-tongued, sophisticated, beautiful. Free. For a few precious moments in a dark alleyway, he’s also mine, hot and sweet under the stars… until he crushes me like dirt beneath his designer boot.

When the prettiest man I’ve ever hated shows up at my job the next day, I’m not sure if I want to strangle him or drag him into bed. Actually—I think I want both. But Keynes isn’t here for the likes of me: he makes that painfully clear. With everyone else at work, he’s all gorgeous, glittering charm—but when I get too close, he turns vicious.

And yet, I can’t stay away. Because there’s something about this ice king that sets me on fire, a secret vulnerability that makes my chest ache. I’ll do whatever it takes to sneak past his walls and see the real man again.

The last thing I expect is for that man to ruin me.

Work for It is 80,000 words of hot, angst-filled, M/M romance featuring a cynical city boy, a gruff, soft-hearted farmer, and a guaranteed happy-ever-after. No cheating, no cliff-hangers, just love. (Eventually.) This story is a spin-off set in the Just for Him world, taking place after the last book in that series. Please be aware: this book contains references to depression and anxiety that could trigger certain audiences.

Sarah's Beach Vacation Binge

Today Sarah is sharing some quick thoughts on 5 romances she read while on vacation. Originally she had planned on ranking these books but in the end they were all too amazing and she just couldn't do it! Is that a fail or a win? IDK, I'd call it "Story of My Life", as I can never pick favorites or rank them.

Every year, my mom and I go to the beach for a few days, just the two of us, around our birthdays. I was born 6 days after her birthday, during the hottest part of the July. This trip is not a luxury, by this part of the summer it is a necessity. We get a barebones oceanfront hotel room, have our umbrella planted on the beach by 9am each day, walk, swim, and read until about 5pm, eat dinner, and repeat. Between the time spent on the beach and the window between dinner and bed, I have a lot of time to read! This year, right before our trip I stumbled across Book Riot’s “50 MUST-READ ROMANCES PUBLISHED IN THE 2010s” and decided to curate my vacation reading list from their recommendations. Some of the stories I had read like Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai, The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, and Rafe by Rebekah Weatherspoon so I knew this was a well reasoned and potential gold mine of a list.

I read on my kindle and keep my NC Digital Library check outs at the max (5 at a time) so I cleared out my loans list and decided the first 5 books I could check out from the library would be my reading list for the trip. There were a few books I had to place a hold for, some that my library didn’t have (though I requested the missing ones until I had reached my digital request limit for the NCDL- 12 if anyone is interested), and ended up with:

Take the Lead by Alexis Daria
Can’t Escape Love by Alyssa Cole
Stroke of Midnight by Andie J. Christopher
The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev
Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare
