Blog Tour: Interview w/ Jaye Shields!

WELCOME BACK TO THE BLOG, JAYE! :)

Jaye Shields holds a degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University with an emphasis in archaeology. Her previous claims to fame include being a bass player for a grunge band called the Hymens, being mistaken for Britney Spears while in Tokyo, and commercial model. She insists the commercial still counts even though her lines were cut.

When she's not flying the skies as a flight attendant for a major airline, she spends her time writing sensual paranormal romance and urban fantasy. Thanks to her grandmother, she's been reading romance novels since she was ten years old. Jaye sprinkles her love of history, mythology, and the occult into flaming hot reads. Where to Find Jaye:

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

The_Book_Queen: Hi Jaye! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Jaye: I’m a flight attendant by day, romance writer by night. I love animals and hope that someday I can have a huge farm as well as an apartment in the city of Paris. Cross your fingers for me!

TBQ: Clearly you love writing. But if you had not become a writer, what else would you have done? Any dream jobs you'd still like to try?

J: My other job as a flight attendant. Can’t beat flying around, hanging out with cool crew and meeting cool passengers and jetting off to new places on your days off.

TBQ: Ah, sounds like a dream come true! :) Your newest release, Addiction of a Sex Demon, is the third in your Sex Demon trilogy. Can you tell us a little bit about this book, and why readers are going to love it?

J: Readers will love Addictions of a Sex Demon because it’s hot and because Sephina, my heroine is just like the rest of us. She’s extremely flawed and she knows it, but she still manages to have a sense of humor. She loves sister Zahra and brother-in-law Lennox and I think people will end up rooting for her to have her own happily ever after.

TBQ: Are there other genres you would like to write about? How about other paranormal themes?

J: Zombies would be so fun, but right now I’m almost done with my first contemporary. It’s been fun, definitely a change of pace. No one’s getting tortured or dying in this book! Actually, that’s not true, someone does die. Why am I such a sadist?

TBQ: Hehe. :) I know we all hate this question, author and reader alike. :) But I have to ask: What are a few of your favorite books and/or authors?

J: Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, Simone Elkeles, Jayne Ann Krentz and JR Ward. I first started reading Nora Roberts, but I have to admit I haven’t read a book by her since I was 14. I became obsessed with Jayne Ann Krentz because she’s a Seattle author and I was born and raised in Seattle until I was a sophomore in high school.

TBQ: All wonderful authors--I'll admit, I'm still reading Nora when I want a bit of a comfort-read. :D Have you ever fallen for a hero, either from one of your books or from another author? If so, who is he and what drew you to him?

J: All of them. I love a man that’s been through something dark and came out the other side. I have a lot of admiration for people who don’t give up in things. I think that’s why I love paranormals, because the men are generally very dark or very flawed in some way. I feel like too many of the men in other genres are rich.

TBQ: What's next-- Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming releases or WIP?

J: In February I am lucky enough to have two releases, Addictions of a Sex Demon and Secrets of the Sky, a full-length paranormal that’s part of my Immortals in Alameda series. Readers that love Sephina will adore Sparrow, from the book Secrets of the Sky. Both of those ladies crack me up and I’m so glad they found their studs!

SPEED ROUND:

A day on a secluded island OR a day at the spa?
Do I have food on the secluded island? Camera? If so, secluded island all the way. (Of course!)

Reading a spicy romance novel OR a sweet “my-heart-skips-a-beat” one?
A spicy romance novel should make your heart skip a beat. If Addictions of a Sex Demon doesn’t, then I’m not doing my job. (You got me there!)

Which would you rather have an affair with: a sexy highlander OR a devilishly handsome English lord?
How is this even a question? Highlander all the way. (Ah, a girl after my own heart! You're right, it's really not a question! *smiles*)

Hot summer days OR cold winter nights?
Cold winter nights with a fire and a man to keep me warm. (Isn't that the only way to enjoy a cold night? That or a book.)

Where would your dream house be: in the city, where all the action is OR nestled in the mountain where you can enjoy the quiet and the wilderness?
Bah! You found my weakness. As I mentioned earlier, I love both. If I had to choose just one, I think I’d build my dream house in the middle of nowhere and rent a tiny studio in a big city.

If you could live in any time period, past or future, which one would it be?
I would live now, where women speak there minds and men love them for it. Romance novels aren’t realistic and as much as I love to pretend that highlanders would have wanted a sassy independent woman, I doubt it was really like that. (Sigh...you're probably right. But I still want my Highlander!)

Cover Lover OR Blurb Fan?
Blurb all the way. Although I do love my cover for Addictions of a Sex Demon. (It is a very lovely cover!)

Steamy Novella OR Sweet Novel? (aka, Quickie or Slow Build Up?)
Sweet Novel. I love longer books for sure. The longer the better as long as stuff is actually happening. (Hehe...I'm reminded of our talk on Twitter about LOTR....Sometimes longer is not better! But hey, that's just me...)

And finally, tell us 3 unique/wacky/fun things about yourself:

  1. I’m single (but have a date tomorrow with the sexiest man I’ve ever seen) [Oooh--have fun!]
  2. I’m a dork (extremely obsessed with Lord of the Rings) [Please forgive my dislike of the actual books...]
  3. I did equestrian dressage in 4H when I was younger. Love horses!

The_Book_Queen: Thanks so much for stopping by, Jaye|, and please know that you are welcome back anytime! Do you have any questions for our readers—something to spark a good discussion? :)

If you’ve read any of my sex demon books, what was your favorite moment? I’m dyin’ to know.

XOXO Jaye

Excerpt

Axel reached out and touched the soft flesh of the woman. He'd been given the gift of a hellion with the face of an angel. Her cheek fit perfectly in his palm as he cupped her face. Her eyes flickered in response, shifting from a playful, yellow glow to a deep, primal, amber hue. He drew his finger down her shoulder and observed the heated silk of her skin.

"You're hot enough to be a dragon's mate." He spoke gently, afraid to spook her.

Her dainty hand swatted him away. "A sexual demon like you doesn't need cheesy pickup lines."

He frowned. "Your skin is very warm, woman. What are you?"

"I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours."

Axel appraised her and was happy to note that her climax had helped stop the trembling of her hands. But it would only be a matter of time before the effects of the withdrawal continued. "My name is Axel Stavros, one of the few quetzalem in this realm."

He searched her face for a reaction, but found none. Instead, the firecracker ran a hand through her electric pink hair, mussing it up so that she looked like she'd just rolled out of bed. He groaned at the thought.

"Quetzalem, huh? Well, that explains the tasty BBQ smokehouse quality of your skin."

He frowned. There was no detecting how this woman truly felt about his intentions. "You are familiar with my breed then? Perhaps you know that once a year we go into heat for twelve hours, and during this time we need constant climax to fan the embers of the brimstone lacing our bones. If we do not, our brimstone dries. Never more can we get it back once the cinders turn to ash."

"Well, it's a good thing you found the sex demon in town, isn't it?"

Of course. He should have guessed. She was too damn hot to be anything else; it was her young, innocent face that had convinced him otherwise. He'd already experienced the fire coursing through her veins like liquid passion, and he knew her claim to be more than true. It was an understatement.

He motioned for her to follow him. "Come to my home and I'll give you what you need."

That perked her up. No doubt she thought he meant the fae wing. "You know, sex demons can sympathize with your little problem. Except we have it worse. If we don't get climax on a regular basis, we can weaken, and even die."

"I doubt you've ever had a problem with this." His gaze raked over her sumptuous, goddess-like body. He instantly regretted the words when her yellow eyes swarmed with a deep orange and flecks of brown. She'd gone from carefree to tormented in only the breath of a sentence.

"I haven't, but my sister Zahra nearly died just last month. She was tortured by someone who knew this information. Not everyone likes sex demons. Surely you can appreciate this, dragon boy, since your kind has been hunted to near extinction."

Axel looked upon the woman in a new light. She wasn't just a sensual hellion. She'd seen enough things in her obviously young life to be a woman who knew how to take care of herself. Contemplating what kind of hard times would have led to the thick skin she possessed fueled his veins with rage. Thinking of anyone hurting this beautiful woman brought a haze over his vision. Remembering her current condition, he took her hand in his, but she jerked it away. He'd held it just long enough to realize the shakes had returned.

He'd seen enough withdrawal to know her insides probably felt as if they were soaked in acid, being pickled in bitter liquid need. Her mind would only be half-registering his words. The other half would be an evil mantra teasing her with the desire to make this itching of her skin and pain within her body go away.

"I'd been clean for a month, but I had a slip up the other day." Her gaze flickered with disappointment. "My sister still doesn't know. We left our hometown mostly on my behalf." She

laughed, but it escaped in a bitter, desperate cry. He searched her face for tears, but found none. "Gods, why am I telling this to my dealer?"

"I'll be more than your dealer soon."
