[Kame's Review]: "Born Wild"

Born Wild by Julie Ann Walker
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca (November 5, 2013)
Series: Black Knights Inc, 5
Genre: Contemporary Romance -- Romantic Suspense

She's got three rules:

1. Trust no one… Eve Edens has been abandoned, used, or manipulated by almost everyone she's ever met. Born into ridiculous wealth, she's dealt with the petty jealousies and sordid little resentments for nearly thirty years. But after three botched attempts on her life, she can no longer ignore the truth. Someone wants her dead.

2. Avoid the bad boys at all costs… William "Wild Bill" Reichert, the wonderfully sexy boy who abandoned her years ago, is back in town. Only he's no boy. Now he's a covert operative - and he's all man. When Eve hires Bill to help her discover who is behind the attacks, Bill soon comes to suspect it's someone much closer to Eve than she dares to believe.

3. And never fall for the same ruse twice… The search for the killer takes Bill and Eve deep into the dark secrets and strange world of the rich and famous, and into the heart of red-hot passion re-ignited by the peril that threatens to consume them both. But does Eve dare risk her heart on Bill a second time?

Kame's Review:

Okay no one can deny that it has to be more than bad luck that has been following Eve Edens. In the past few months she has been mugged, her apartment caught on fire and now her Vespa has no brakes; as she is speeding towards certain death she concludes someone must want her dead.  She survives this last attempt, but the authorities still just believe she has bad luck. Eve turns to the only people she trusts to keep her safe and figure out who wants her dead; Black Knights Incorporated.

“Well, if possessiveness had a particular look,
then it was the one wallpapered all over Wild Bill’s Face.”

Eve and Bill have a past.  A past that was alluded to many times in this book, while that past was marred by some events that tore them apart; there seems to be some wonderful memories too. I would have loved to see a quick look at Eve and Bill when they were young and in love and made a vow to each other. Bill is bitter, and there were times I wanted to just tell him to get over it. He did earn points with me for ensuring Eve’s safety. Eve was so sad about how she hurt Bill and took all the blame which she has been shouldering for twelve years. During an attempt to bring Eve someplace safe they give into the sizzle that they never acted upon years ago.  I will just say I think Eve would agree the twelve years was worth the wait!

This is a very concise book. The plot happens in about a week, and since most of the Black Knights are either out on a mission or on personal business the cast of characters for this book is very small.  I didn’t mind the quick time of the plot, but I did miss most of my favorite Black Knights. The ones that did appear gave their normal quick wit and come backs I have come to expect. There is a definite mystery behind the attempts on Eve’s life, and the identity is revealed towards the end with a complete reveal of the motive – so no cliffhanger here. There was some definite backstory created for what I hope is a future book for a few characters (Mac & Delilah); there was some definite sizzle.

A good Black Knights book to continue the series, I look forward to the next installment.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Somehow it slipped through the crack. Noticed on GR that you have it listed as "review to come" as well?
