[ARC Review]: "Just a Taste"

Just a Taste by Shannyn Schroeder
Publisher: Lyrical Press (January 19, 2015)
Series: The O'Leary's, 5
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Grief has brought them together again—will love open the door to their future? When it’s an O’Leary in the picture, finding out is just part of the adventure…

Carmen Delgado is left reeling when her father dies. Taking care of him has been her sole purpose for so long, she’s forgotten what it’s like to have dreams of her own. And with steady, sexy Liam O’Leary inheriting a share in her dad’s successful food truck, Carmen is suddenly free to explore her life’s possibilities. She never expected Liam to provide the kind of temptation she’s not sure she can resist…

A talented chef, Liam O’Leary has been itching to open his own restaurant for years—and the death of his mentor is a reminder that time passes too quickly. Gus’s Taco Taxi isn’t exactly what he dreamed of, but he can’t desert Gus’s daughter. Working side by side is an unexpected pleasure—and grownup Carmen is alluring in all new ways. Is love on the menu—or will old fears and insecurities drive them apart?

My Review:

I liked Just a Taste. Really, I did! It was an easy read and for the most part I enjoyed it. But I had a few issues with it, too.

I liked that Carmen was not a skinny woman. I liked that family was so important to both Liam and Carmen. I liked the interactions with Liam's family and because of said interactions I'm curious to read their books.

While I liked that the sex in Just a Taste was more realistic (no insta-orgasms, simultaneous orgasms, or perfect first-time as a couple in this book), I also found the sex a bit, well, disappointing. For example, Carmen only reaches orgasm by Liam's magic fingers and mouth, and then in her post-orgasm happy-daze, Liam screws her until he climaxes . . . While she's basically just lying there, in an orgasm-coma, and not actively participating. This just rubs me the wrong way. I mean, I get it; not every woman orgasms from intercourse alone. But this, this just bothered me and came across as very un-sexy. Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to think of the heroine as just zoning out (orgasm high or not) while the hero plows her. That's not sexy.

There was one sex scene (against the couch) later on that I actually found pretty sexy, but otherwise every other sex scene left me huffing a slight sigh of irritation.

There were a few times I wanted to smack these two, for various reasons. Nothing major, just little things that honestly I can't even remember now.

Despite the lackluster sex, I still liked this book and finished it very quickly. I will definitely be trying more of Schroeder’s books, especially the previous books in this series.

4 STARS!

While the sex scenes may not be that sexy, they look pretty realistic to me, like you said. I haven't read this so maybe I would be bothered too. What worries me more is that you wanted to smack both MC a few times, and I've had too much of that lately to really want to read this book. Great review ;)

Thanks TBQ...I know what you mean about wanting to shake the characters. Sometimes the banter is a little too much. Enjoyed your review!

Thanks for the review - I considered this book - and the things that you didn't like would drive me crazy

*nods* That's just it -- when it comes to sex scenes like this, it's hard to review it. Because on the one hand, I know it's more realistic, and we ALL want more realistic sex scenes in our books. On the other hand, we read these books for the escape. So, it's hard to judge, at least for me!

*sigh* I read this one back in early Dec, I think, and to be honest, even writing the review up right after finishing, very few details stuck with me. When I was checking this post last night, I considered dropping a star, just because it was such a forgettable read for me, but decided just to stick with my original rating/review.

Truly, the best way to describe this book is: it was okay. Nothing great, but also nothing so bad that I could rant in detail for hours. It was just . . . meh.

Hrm that's too bad about the sex scenes. I've read some along those lines in different erotic ones but they definitely came off more sexy than this one sounds. :/

Yeah, me too, but this time it just did not work for me...
