Author Interview: Megan Erickson

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, MEGAN! :)

Megan worked as a journalist covering real-life dramas before she decided she liked writing her own endings better and switched to fiction.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. When she's not tapping away on her laptop, she's probably listening to the characters in her head who won't stop talking.

Where to Find Megan:

TBQ: Hi Megan! I’m so glad to have you on the blog today. By the way, I’m still NOT over #JusLan. *glares* Seriously, people, you need to read this book, but be prepared for the feels.

Can I offer you something to drink? I also have cheesecake bites.

Megan: Thank you so much for having me on your blog! And I’m not sorry about the #JusLan hangover because I’m an #evilauthor. I heard the #JusLan hangover common, haha. And why yes, I’ll take a glass of Chardonnay, please! *sips*

TBQ: Yes, yes, I know you are an #evilauthor. :D I'll forgive you for the tears one day . . .

Let’s talk about Trust the Focus, which just came out this week – congratulations! Give us the quick pitch about the book and why readers are going to love it.

M: Trust the Focus is about a college graduate, Justin, who begins a summer road trip with his best friend to spread Justin’s father’s ashes at locations all across the US. Along the way, he must confront what he’s known for years now – that he’s gay, and that he’s in love with his best friend.

TBQ: Talk about a surprise for Lan!

I loved Justin and Landry. In 5 words (each), describe these two.

M: Justin: Heartbroken, Scared, Vulnerable, Loyal and Loving

Landry: Proud, Strong, Funny, Sarcastic and Hopeful

TBQ: That's really the perfect way to describe them!

Do you have a favorite part from Trust the Focus?

M: This is a hard one. I have so many favorites from this book. I think my favorite scene is the entire amusement park trip. From Landry’s jokes, to Justin winning the stuffed horse, to the roller coaster discussion, to the awkward moment when they are trapped in a little plastic playhouse at the water park.

TBQ: Gah, that was such a fun scene! (My favorite? THE WHOLE BOOK).

What was the most surprising thing you “learned” about these two while writing this story?

M: When I started writing Trust the Focus, I knew this would be a romance. I knew Justin and Landry would end up together with an HEA. But I wasn’t prepared for how much they fit together. How they are really soul mates, in my opinion. They surprised with every discussion as they push each other to be better, healthier, happier people.

TBQ: YES! These two fit, not just as lovers or friends. (heart)

Jus and Lan see a lot of places on their road trip. If you could take a road trip, where would you go?

M: I love road trips! I’m actually going to change this question a little (is that okay?). My favorite road trip was in college – we’d just finished our final exams senior year. We were D-O-N-E. And we all piled in a car and just…drove. We stopped at whatever bar or restaurant struck our fancy and we had so much fun. To this day, that little road trip remains my favorite. No timeline, no schedule, just driving and stopping at whim.

TBQ: That sounds PERFECT, actually!

What was the last book you read that gave you a book hangover or made you want to shove the book in everyone’s hands? (Much like TtF did to me . . . )

M: I have two – Beneath the Stain by Amy Lane almost broke me. I bawled my eyes out reading that. BAWLED. And then I got sucked into the Special Forces series by Aleksandr Voinov. Oh my Lord, Dan and Vadim are the most messed up couple I've ever read but I couldn’t stop. I read all the books and then couldn't pick up another book for a while. They killed me.

TBQ: *adds to list*

What's next-- Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming releases or WIP?

M: Yes! Well, there is a companion novel to Trust the Focus. It’s called Focus on Me and one MC is a character you met in Trust the Focus. The other MC, who tells the story, is a brand new character. His name is Colin, and he’s a Southern boy who loves barbecue. Oh boy, do I love my Colin. Focus on Me will be out July 21. And if you thought #JusLan was emotional, you are in for a real gut punch when you meet Colin and Riley.  #evilauthor [EVIL! And yet . . .  GIVE IT TO ME NOW!]

I also have an adult m/f series with Avon, starting with Dirty Thoughts, which is out June 16. And I also have an m/f series with Entangled’s Brazen, and that starts with Changing his Game, out the end of April. I have a lot on my plate this year! [And I'm looking forward to all of them!]

Trust the Focus by Megan Erickson
Publisher: InterMix (March 17, 2015)
Series: In Focus, 1
Genre: M/M New Adult Contemporary

With his college graduation gown expertly pitched into the trash, Justin Akron is ready for the road trip he planned with his best friend Landry— and ready for one last summer of escape from his mother’s controlling grip. Climbing into the Winnebago his father left him, they set out across America in search of the sites his father had captured through the lens of his Nikon.

As an aspiring photographer, Justin can think of no better way to honor his father’s memory than to scatter his ashes at the sites he held sacred. And there’s no one Justin would rather share the experience with more than Landry.

But Justin knows he can’t escape forever. Eventually he’ll have to return home and join his mother’s Senate campaign. Nor can he escape the truth of who he is, and the fact that he’s in love with his out-and-proud travel companion.

Admitting what he wants could hurt his mother’s conservative political career. But with every click of his shutter and every sprinkle of ash, Justin can’t resist Landry’s pull. And when the truth comes into focus, neither is prepared for the secrets the other is hiding.
