Whatcha Reading? (80)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

-- Sweet Little Lies by Jill Shalvis -- [Audiobook, Library]

I enjoyed the story and Shalvis's writing (as always). My main problem was I hated that she kept the secret from him until nearly 90%. NOOOOPE. Talk your shit out early, people. Also, I didn't feel like she grew as a character, in that she still thought she needed to single-handedly save all the victims for something that WAS NOT EVEN HER FAULT. I'm not saying a person jumps from blaming themselves for years to NOT blaming themselves, but she didn't even move an inch in the direction of moving past that guilt and realizing it's not her place or responsibility to be taking care of all the people affected by her parents' accident. I wanted to see her work through those feelings of guilt and she didn't even face them, really.

Will I be back for more in the series? Of course. I definitely didn't hate this one, but it wasn't perfect for me. Minus the two things mentioned above, it was very enjoyable with Shalvis's usual fun quotes and scenes. Narration was okay; she's done other Shalvis books and she's not my favorite narrator, mainly because of her female voices, which always grate on my nerves, something about the pitch or something.

Favorite quote:

With her hands still fisted in his shirt, she gave a gentle tug until he bent enough that she could kiss him softly. And then not so softly.

“What was that for?” he asked when she pulled free, his voice sexy low and gruff now.

“For being the kind of guy who can admit he has emotions.”

He cupped her face. “We don’t have to tell anyone, right?”

She smiled. “It’ll be our secret.” But then her smile faded because she wasn’t good at secrets.

Or maybe she was too good at them . . . “I’m not helpless,” she said. “I want you to know that.”

“I do know it.” He paused, looking a little irritated again. “Mostly.”

“Good,” she said. “Now that’s settled, you should know, the caveman thing you just pulled . . . it turned me on a little bit.”

He slid her a look. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

Looking a little less like he was spoiling for a fight, his hands went to her hips and he pulled her in tighter.

What the hell was she doing? Clearly, she wasn’t equipped to stay strong, and who could? The guy was just too damn potent. Too visceral. Testosterone and pheromones leaked off of him. She dropped her head to his chest. “Ugh. You’re being . . . you.”

“Was that in English?”

“This is all your fault.”

“Nope. Definitely not English.”

“You’re being all hot and sexy, dammit,” she said. She banged her head on his chest a few times. “And I can’t seem to . . . not notice said hotness and sexiness.”

He smiled. “You want me again.”

Again. Still . . . She tossed up her hands. “You wear your stupid sexiness on your sleeve and you don’t even know it.”

-- Beyond Temptation by Kit Rocha --

Yes, I'm finally playing catch up. It's one of my 2017 goals: finish series I love but let linger because of Review TBR Worry. No more!

Loved Noah and Emma, sexy af as always, and loved visiting the O'Kanes. Quick read, but like all the books in the series, you really must read in order to get the full whole and characters. Highly recommend doing this!

Favorite quote:

“Fucking hell." He smoothed her hair back with shaking fingers before turning to kiss her cheek. "All those years wasted, when I could have been loving you."

The answer was easy, obvious. "You were."

He choked on a laugh and coaxed her head back, urging her to meet his eyes. "Fine, then. All those wasted years, I could have been being loved."

"You were that too."

-- Falling for the Player by Jessica Lee --

Former jock (now mechanic) and "nerd" (now lawyer). A quick read. I enjoyed it, and would try another by this author, but I felt like the conflict was almost non-existent and what was there too quickly wrapped up. I had a few minor issues with wording, too. Full review goes up next week.
