Whatcha Reading? (100)

A new Saturday post where you can share with us what you are currently (or just finished) reading and I will share my brief thoughts on books that I read during the previous week.

May 21st - 27th:

Small Change by Roan Parrish

Kindle
Goodreads
Releases June 1st
Rating = 5 Stars
May Royal Pick --- Giveaway up now!

I already posted my review of this one, so I won't go over it again. But I loved this one, the romance was so adorable, but also sexy, and with a little dose of emotions, too. Can't wait for book 2!

  • Oh, Aden. I freakin' loved him. He's such a caretaker alpha for the Arrows, and I loved seeing him working so hard to keep everyone safe, to give them hope, to help them thrive post-Silence.
  • I really enjoyed his romance with Zaira, too.
    • Zaira is definitely a unique heroine -- I know many probably didn't really like her. I did! After all, she's not so different from possessive, tortured heroes that we all love, so why give her shit for being "hard to love" for acting like heroes that we swoon over?
  • Can I just say that I love how the Sex and Intimacy 101 file has been added to and passed along through the Arrow heroes?
  • Won't spoil anything with the story or plot, but things are still fast moving like always.
    • Plus, loved seeing glimpses of previous couples and whatnot
  • Oh, but my heart was aching towards the end, waiting alongside Zaira for everything to be okay again (sorry, being vague, no spoilers)
  • Another great read in the series

Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Ebook from Overdrive
Rating = 3 - 3 1/2 Stars

  • I so love Hoyt's writing, and this series . . . but this one has to be my least favorite of the bunch (so far).
  • It wasn't BAD, it just didn't pull me in like the previous 5 books. I always felt like I was only skimming the surface while reading, not deep diving into the book, you know?
  • Storyline here has a bit of a Batman like feel
    • Hero, who is a Ghost of St. Giles, is out for revenge on the mystery man that murdered his parents when he was 14
      • He was there
      • Traumatized him, needless to say, but soon after he had to step up to be Duke, and then his aim for revenge
    • The scene where he's doing his morning workout/training in his historical gym? Oh. My. I'd pay to sit and watch that.
  • Heroine is the lady's companion to her cousin
    • Cousin is after the duke (hero), and he's not opposed because if he has to wed, she's a respectable choice
    • Heroine needs the duke's help to get her twin brother, who was falsely accused of murder 4 years ago, out of Bedlam
  • These two had their steamy and sweet moments together
  • Truly, didn't dislike this one, just was a bit disappointed from how the previous books went
  • Also of note: I listened to the previous 5 on audio, but not this one. I think I'll try the next book on audio again, see if that factors into my rating or if it was just this particular story here

Mature Content by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell

Releases June 2nd
Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
Rating = 4 1/2 Stars
June Royal Pick

  • Love this series, and these authors, so there's that. :)
  • Enemies to lovers
    • Both men are Youtubers
      • Beau is more of the "wholesome" "Let me educate the LGBTQ community" one
      • Zane is the more "trashy" one, giving zero shits and sharing all his sexcapades and partying ways online
    • I-hate-you-but-I-can't-stop-wondering-what-it-would-be-like-DAMMIT dynamics that turns into more
  • Kinky
    • Not OVERLY so, but Zane gets off on being "used" and dominated by his partner, and Beau loves giving orders
    • Also some hot edging and play with toys, a few ass slaps here or there, but really that's as extreme as it gets -- no whips and chains, etc.
    • Just two men who like the same things sexually getting off together = so hot!
  • Loved their story, there's some angst as Beau's past pops up again, but otherwise not TOO much "Ouch, my heart!" as these two dance around each other.

DNF:

Hot Pursuit by Lynn Raye Harris

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo
Goodreads
This was the pick from this week's #TBQsTBR Twitter poll. I knew before going in that a few said
that while they love the series, this is the weakest book, but since this is the only one I have in the series (and it was a freebie), I figured I'd try it anyway.

I had to DNF at 30%. I just didn't care for the story or the characters, the heroine was TSTL (and her younger sister, too), and the suspense element was just . . . off. Like, no one was reacting to the fact that the sister is missing and hey, at the same time the heroine just walked into her house, where she was going to meet an old partner who wanted money from her, to find said man murdered and her mother knocked out -- but there's nothing to worry about, the sister is probably just off being a teen and not coming home on time. I'm sure (hope?!) that this is figured out later in the book, but since I didn't care to stick around and find out, it was just annoying.

And don't get me started on the fact that the heroine keeps kicking the dead horse through the 30% that I did read -- the dead horse being how she was so hurt by the hero 9 years ago when he took her virginity in HS and then the next day turned his back on her. It's not explained exactly why or what happened, but for all these pages, she keeps going back to "But he took what I freely offered him and then ruined it" and while I get that it was a shitty thing to do, especially when the two are teens and everything is Such a Super Big Deal then, I was tired of having it thrown in every other page.

I know Kame loves this series, but for me, I decided to just stop and move on to something else. I'm not sure if I'll come back and try another in the future or not. I'm not dying to do so, so chances are low, considering all the books I AM dying to read first.

Remember, Sunday morning I'll have a new #TBQsTBR poll up on my Twitter (check my Twitter feed or that hashtag there), so if you want to help me pick a (better!) book for next week, be sure to vote! :)

Currently Listening To:

Almost done and loving (no surprise!). With the exception of a few novellas my library system doesn't have, I'm now caught up and will be starting an ARC of Silver Silence this coming week. Can't wait!

Almost done.
Done
I'm behind on ARCs (again), but wanted to try and get this one in real quick, even if I don't end up doing a full review on it. NA, cheerleader heroine, hero -- with beard and tatts -- tries out for the squad as a dare but is actually quite good at it.

Out 6/6

Starting this one next. Hey, look, I managed to hold off until the end of May even though I've been dying to read my ARC since early April! :)

So what are YOU currently reading?

Enjoy!
