Whatcha Reading? + NO Podcast (March 10th)

You know how I've been talking about taking time off and not stressing myself out? Well, I'm actually listening to myself for once, which is why there's no podcast to go alongside today's post. Things were just crazy in my life this week, and suddenly Friday rolled around and I hadn't even started recording the podcast, let alone the hours it takes to edit it. Could I have pushed through and still done one anyway? Sure. But the stress that would have caused me . . . Oy. I'm getting anxiety just thinking about it now!

Instead, I'm skipping the podcast, but I do still have books to talk about below!

Before that, I do want to briefly mention the situation going on with Santino Hassell. I'm not going to get into it all, but you can find the basics of what's currently going on HERE and HERE. There's also a very detailed breakdown on Tumblr.

But seeing all of this play out on Twitter this past week reminded me, again, that as much as I love this community and have had good experiences, that's not how everyone experiences it.

The romance community is not perfect, and some parts are very toxic, and in general the community is not nearly as welcoming and supportive for marginalized readers and authors as it is for the "default" (white cishet able-bodied, etc). I just want to give this general reminder to everyone: be kind to one another, be welcoming to everyone and not just your personal circle of friends. That's a simple thing, I know, but in the long run that can help with so many of the flaws that our community has. Yes, our community, like anything else, has its flaws, too, and can always do better. But that'll only happen if we all do our part, okay?

Moving past all of that, I do have another bit of advice, brought to you by a Monday spent with my BFF at the movie theater: take time for yourself and do something that makes you happy and refills your tank. Especially if it involves a good friend that you haven’t seen in a while. Life is crazy and everyone gets busy, but take some time off from it all and just have fun with your friend, even if -- especially if! -- it involves food court pizza and Orange Julius.

Enough rambling, let's get into what I read for the week!

What I Read:

Talk British to Me by Robin Bielman
1 1/2 Stars

✦ 1st POV, new adult
✦ He’s a talk show “dating expert” (no one knows, he does it anonymously)
✦ She’s a barista and aspiring travel writer
✦ Honestly I felt like this was such a disappointment/waste of my time
✦ Some hot dirty talk
✦ Potential that was never reached. At all.
✦ Biggest problem: the "I can't control my dick around the DRUNK, NAKED, AND SLEEPING heroine so I need to leave the room before I do something 'not gentleman-like'" FUCK THIS SHIT STOP IT

Scoring off the Field by Naima Simone
Releases March 12th
3 1/2 Stars

✦ Heroine of color; curvy
✦ Friends to lovers; grew up in a foster home for a few year, too
✦ He's a quarterback
✦ She’s his PA; wants to do social work though
✦ Quick read, very enjoyable
✦ A+ sexytimes (though they are a bit slow to arrive and don't stay long before the book ends)
✦ Biggest problem: One line where the hero complains that having feelings gave him a pussy and UGH, stop this

Wilde in Love by Eloisa James
Narrated by Susan Duerden
2 Stars

✦ He’s an infamous explorer – the ton, especially the women, are obsessed with him
✦ She wants nothing to do with his life
✦ The story was just “okay”. Didn’t hate, didn’t love, was able to zone out a bit
✦ The narrator though? HATED
✦ On the plus side: there is a hero masturbation scene, which I approve of and the sex was good, though it also arrives late in the book and doesn't last long
✦ Also, cute skunk? I mean, it's a skunk. But she loves it so it was kinda cute to read in the story

Currently Listening To:

Duke of Pleasure by Elizabeth Hoyt

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo

Excellent so far. I’m finally to Alf’s story, aka, the female Ghost of St. Giles. Also, I’m going to leave you with this little teaser: there’s a masturbation scene from the hero and it’s good. I’m sure I’ll go into more detail about it next week, so don’t you worry.

Currently Reading:

Soul Bonded by Dria Andersen

Kindle | NOOK | Kobo

New to me author (and an AOC). This one sounds really good, with POC characters and the couple searching for the Book of Divinity. Plus it’s been a while since I picked up a paranormal, so this seems like the perfect choice. Soul Bonded comes out on March 15th
