Whatcha Reading? (June 23rd)

Things are still crazy in my corner of the world as I continue to deal with the sudden loss of my grandmother and all the things that need to be taken care of. So I'm not online much, not reading much, and just basically . . . trying to get through each day.

I managed to finish 3 books, but I started all of them last week. Now I'm doing a reread of an old favorite to give my brain a bit of a rest while still being able to, at least somewhat, escape everything.

What I Read:

Ocean Light by Nalini Singh
4 Stars

✦ Human + water shifter (I won’t spoil what she is)
✦ Countdown to his possible death unless the meds work
✦ I LOVE this series! But this wasn’t my fav. I didn’t connect w/ the couple, didn’t see the romance. Also, sex is vague/fade to black, which was new for Singh. I was just left wanting more from these two. I felt like the pace was very slow and nothing was going on for most of the book, then we get a bit of a kick in the last 20% or so but it wasn't enough for me. And I still felt like the romance was MIA (on-page). :(

A Girl Like Her by Talia Hibbert
4 Stars

✦ Web comic designer (Black, autistic)
✦ Former soldier, blacksmith (bearded Captain America)
✦ Neighbors to lovers
✦ He cooks and cares for her 😍
✦ Slow burn
✦ It's Hibbert -- her books always rock

Scandal Never Sleeps by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake
Narrated by Kaleo Griffith
3 Stars

✦ He’s rich, just inherited his late friend’s company
✦ She’s a hacker, head of tech security for said company
✦ Their anonymous 1NS turns into “Shit! We work together.”
✦ It was just . . . okay, I guess? I didn't have any outright big problems with it. But I wasn't wowed by it.
✦ And the sex scenes . . . they were LONG but not good long. As in, one scene, she's teasing him (about to sit down on him, his dick is right there at her entrance). And then we get, I'm not joking, TWO pages of her sitting above his dick while she's thinking about this thing or that (her feelings towards him, to be fair, BUT STILL). And this sort of thing happened a lot. Where there's paragraphs and paragraphs of Other Stuff between the actual sex that's supposed to be going on *right then*. IDK if I'm describing this well, but it was just annoying. And the sex, though explicit, didn't wow me either, tbh.
✦ Kaleo does a good job with narration
✦ I'll probably read the rest of the series to find out how the series plot turns out.

Still only $2.99!

Currently Listening To:

The Autumn Bride by Anne Gracie

He comes back from sailing the world for the last decade, finds the heroine has moved in to take care of his aunt -- except he mistakenly believes she's taken advantage of the aunt. In reality, she's the one who saved the aunt from horrible former servants who were taking advantage and mistreating her.

So many fun side characters. Not much plot, or romance so far (and I'm at 30%). But I'm not too mad because this is still a light, easy read and that's what I desperately need right now.

Currently Reading:

Born in Fire by Nora Roberts

This series was one of my first romances, ever, and definitely the first romance I owned my own copy of. I've reread all 3 books so many times over the years. So it's no wonder I'm returning to it again right now, when I need an escape and a book-hug. My grandma was a huge Nora fan as well, and our  dream was to go to Ireland one day...

Set in Ireland. She's a glass artist. He's a rich gallery owner. They have so much tension and banter and they're complete opposites and I fucking love it.

So what are YOU currently reading?

Enjoy!

Until Next Time,
