Guest Post with Alys Murray: New Adult, Some Recs, and Society Girl!

Today I have Alys Murray on the blog with some New Adult recs and a bit about her new contemporary, SOCIETY GIRL!

Learning to Love New Adult Romance

New Adult Romance has always, at least to me, felt a bit like the awkward step-child to traditional romance. Growing from a voracious YA romance audience and the Ao3 fanfiction generation, New Adult Romance fits squarely within the circa 2001 Britney Spears ethos: not a girl, not yet a woman. For some, the genre is too young, with characters grappling immaturely with mature problems. For others, the genre is too old, with characters who lack the believable thrill of first love that characters in YA often possess.

I missed most of the early New Adult romance craze. Though I was right in the perfect intersection of age and boy-craziness, I missed the Harry Styles/boy band thing, which meant that most of the appeal of books like Paper Princess and After went right over my head. After reading the first few chapters of Beautiful Disaster in high school, I became a vocal conscientious objector to that particular craze.

But when I started reading romance in earnest as a self-care tool in college, I found myself drawn to these stories. New Adult Romance was kind of like the bad boy on campus...It had a bad reputation, but I found myself drawn to it.

The more I read, the more I realized why I loved it so much. Maybe it was the bad boy on campus, but it was the bad boy with a heart of gold. The fact that it was positioned in this not a girl, not yet a woman space, and because it was mostly self-published, which meant fewer gatekeepers--allowed authors to tell stories that weren’t as common in YA or Adult romance.

For me, the New Adult romance that I discovered at a truly difficult time in my life was a reminder that the impossible sometimes happens. These characters are in their first blush of adulthood, a time when most people believe that anything is possible. Yes, of course I can save the heart of the campus bad boy. Yes, I can run away with my motorcycle riding girlfriend. Yes, I can have my own Happily Ever After in a world of darkness and sadness. But not only do they believe that these things are true, they fight for them. They go after them. And sometimes, they even achieve them.

New Adult Romance is a rich genre filled with intense love stories and relatable characters. If you’re looking to start getting into this sub-genre, I highly recommend looking at the following authors and books:

Jack Harbon (start with Kitten!)
J.R. Gray (start with King Consort!)
Em Ali ( start with Soft on Soft!)
Jules Kelly (start with Swelter!)
Katrina Ramos Atienza (start with Well Played!)
Julianna Keyes (start with Undecided!)

Happy Reading!

Sam Dubarry is a cynic. Growing up in the foster system in NYC does that to you. And falling in love is by far the stupidest thing you could do in her opinion.

But there’s one thing she craves more than anything—family. The illegitimate American daughter of an English Lord, Sam is desperate to make her father take notice of her. Which is where the Animos Society comes in.

The exclusive Oxford University club is her family’s legacy—and full of the worst kind of rich men. But becoming the first female member will take everything she has. Maybe more.

Daniel Best is the one man who truly sees Sam. The real her. The new mechanic for her father, Daniel is everything the Animos’ aren’t. Kind, honorable, good. But then the worst thing she can imagine happens…

The Society will let her in, if she destroys the one person she might be falling in love with first.
