[Kame's Review]: "Hart Attack" + Excerpt!

Hart Attack by Cristin Harber
Publisher: Mill Creek Press (November 18, 2014)
Series: Titan, 5
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Outside of Titan Group, there are few people that Roman Hart would die for. He’s a soldier, a protector, and he’s haunted that one of the people he should’ve been able to protect didn’t let him. That was years ago, and now a hardened heart and a cocky attitude are his impenetrable shields, until one woman—one challenge—drives him to distraction.

On the outside, Beth Tourne has it all. Luxury car, gorgeous condo, and a job partying with the rich and famous. It’s a plush CIA cover, but she wants more. Anything for an adrenaline rush that can override her guilty numbness and let her forget the tragedy she never saw coming.

Their scars make them perfect operatives. Their mirrored pasts give them deep, wounded reasons to stay alone. But the more they ignore the tension, the more vulnerable they become. Survival means trust. In one another, behind closed doors, and on the job. The only way they’re making it out alive is if they find peace while waging a war.

Kame's Review:

The only thing I want to say is I need you so badly I can’t breathe.

Everyone in Titan knows there is a smoldering attraction between Beth and Roman. They have been denying their attraction, each thinking they are so broken they are not capable of a relationship. Sometimes there is a connection so strong it breaks down the walls in your heart and lets someone in.

Knock.

Just one knock from the cocky bastard who showed up at her place in the middle of the night for no reason at all. She bit her lip. There was actually a very good reason she could guess. One day, she would lose the battle of ignoring their fire. Then she’d get burned. It would be disastrous, but not before it would be awesome.

I have been waiting for this book for a long time, since the first time we meet Beth in Garrison’s Creed. Beth has been one of those secondary characters that we haven’t gotten to know well. She sort of lurked in the shadows. She is a CIA operative, Nic’s former handler and Nic’s best friend. She is burrowing so much pain that she has not even realized she has allowed her job, her cover to become who she is. The only time she feels she can be close to her real self is when she is around Roman. A Titan man can only find love with a strong woman. And Beth is one strong woman. She has a strong will, a strong heart and a strong wall around her emotions. She is actually not that different than Roman. Roman’s life has been his job. He has no real connection to anything other than Titan and no strings to hold him down; but at the same time none to ground him either. He has become sort of a nomad, not allowing himself roots and truly surviving on a temporary lifestyle.

Frozen food summarized his life. The only certain thing was his uncertainty. Jared would call him, say they had a job, then Roman would walk away from whatever he was doing – whoever he was doing – and head to who-the-hell-knew where, staying for however long it took to get the job done.

So live wasn’t conducive to fresh produce. Or a steady woman.

Roman finds he can’t fight the need to be with Beth, but at the same time he still thinks of all those years that Beth was part of Nicola’s life when Roman thought she was dead, and is jealous of that time she had with his sister. Beth and Roman might be the hottest Titan couple yet. They both are trying to recover from a pain that few could understand. But it is the pain that forges their connection; almost like their souls understood the hidden signs. Not only were there scenes that could cause steam to rise from your e-reader, but there were also scenes where your heart will ache for them and their connection that they fought so hard to ignore.

Beth’s knuckles touched his, and he realized his fists were balled. She didn’t take his hand, just pressed hers against his. Her slight touch reached into his soul. He took a breath. Then another. Slowly, his fingers relaxed, loosening until they were limp. She locked her pinky around his, and he shut his eyes.”

She didn’t say a word, didn’t try to take his hand to soothe him beyond what he was capable of. But she had given him a life vest, without him knowing he needed saving. With the strength of one finger, she helped him live through the last painful notes of a song that embodied everything that hurt on the inside.

One of my favorite parts about this book is that all the main characters from all the full-length Titan novels make an appearance. I expected to see Cash and Nic, but to have wonderful moments with Sugar, Jared, and Rocco too it was a gift. These were not just walk through appearances but ones that resonated with the characters we love.

Cash’s brow furrowed as he passed Roman and headed to the kitchen. He slammed to a standstill, taking in the whole freezer-food explosion. “What’d you have a Stouffers-DiGiorno buffet all to yourself? Man alive, why did you nuke all that stuff?” Cash grabbed a now-cold slice of pizza. “And why the crap do you eat pizza with pineapple on it? Though it’s a lot better than raw food.”

The plot is a typical Titan plot, once you think you know where the story is going Cristin Harber makes it take a turn that completely surprises you. There was one part where I actually screamed as I was so shocked by and event, and I put the book down because I was so stunned I just needed time to process before I could continue. If the heart stopping plot wasn’t enough to get you to love this book, there is the sensual and steamy interactions between Roman and Beth too to keep you turning the pages.

I received this ARC from Cristin Harber on my e-reader and I could only resist starting it for about one hour; I then devoured this book – I did not do one other productive thing (including eating) until I was done. There is so much action and so much wonderful character interaction that it is hard to put down. The list of authors that I read their books non-stop as soon as it arrives on my Kindle can be counted on one hand; and Cristin Harber is one of those authors. Put her on your permanent pre-order list; you won’t regret it.

An extremely close second to my favorite book in the series Garrision’s Creed (Cash + Nic)

Hart Attack by Cristin Harber
Excerpt

Her lips tingled for wanting feel his against hers. When he stepped away, she couldn’t stand losing him. Her fingers grabbed his thick arm before she could think better of it.
Roman looked at her hand then at her. “Don’t tempt me, Beth.”
None of the reasons to stay away mattered when she needed to forget everything. “But—”
Roman backed her against the wall, hands crawling up her arms, down her back. His body was too cut, too big. Too much to want to say no to. She arched into him, on him, her breathing far too stilted.
His fingers traced her
