[Kame's Review]: "Because of You"

Because of You by Jessica Scott
Publisher: Loveswept (November 14, 2011)
Series: Coming Home, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
From the war-torn streets of Baghdad to the bittersweet comforts of the home front, two wounded hearts navigate the battlefield of coming home from war in this explosive eBook original from newcomer Jessica Scott.

Keeping his men alive is all that matters to Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison. But meeting Jen St. James the night before his latest deployment makes Shane wonder if there's more to life than war. He leaves for Iraq remembering a single kiss with a woman he'll never see again- until a near fatal attack lands him back at home and in her care. Jen has survived her own brush with death and endured its scars. And yet there's a fire in Shane that makes Jen forget all about her past. He may be her patient, but when this warrior looks her in the eyes, she feels - for the first time in a long time - like a woman. Shane is too proud to ask for help, but for Jen, caring for him is more than a duty -it's a need. And as Jen guides Shane through the fires of healing, she finds something she never expected - her deepest desire.

Kame's Review:

Shane is a platoon leader deep into his soul.  The safety of his men in the sandbox and at home is his main concern.  What happens to him is not important.  On the eve of his next deployment he is packing his duffle in an empty apartment. Signing his divorce papers and trying not to let his wife’s betrayal affect him. He gave her everything, all the furniture the money just so he could be there for his men. He needs to be there, he needs to make sacrifices to make sure his men make it home – they have loved ones - families; he doesn’t.

Jen is a nurse, a good one.  She can understand the broken soldiers healing at her hospital at Fort Hood better than anyone knows.  She herself is missing a part of herself. She understands looking in the mirror and knowing you’re not whole, being so weak you don’t know if you can fight to try to have your life back.  Her purpose is to help these soldiers become whole again and if she puts off her own healing so be it.

Shane and Jen meet the night before deployment in a bar.  Conversation between them is as if they had known each other for years, not hours.  They share a kiss that reaches their core leaving a memory that warms them the months that follow. Shane comes home and for once in his life he is not sure what his future holds and he is all alone, he is angry at the world. The only person he doesn’t bark at is Jen, the hold she placed on his soul that night is still there.  Helping Shane put his life back together will cause Jen to deal with her own broken pieces.

Do not let this being a military romance deter you from reading this book.  I did, and WOW, I almost missed one of the best books I have ever read. Jessica’s scene description is exact and vivid without any of the trappings of a sentimental romance. Her characters have character.  I felt connected to every character in this book, the secondary and tertiary characters included. There were parts my heart was racing, and I confess to skimming parts (and returning to reread) because the need to know the resolution of the scene. I am very thankful to my friend who suggested this book to me, I will listen and read accordingly from now on I promise.  I have found a new go to author.  I anxiously await her next offering.

Meet Kame:

KaKame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Great review, Kame. This book is so special because it focuses on a military romance and not a suspense plot.

Jen is a nurturer, becoming a nurse answered her calling in life. Shane is a broken man, literally & figuratively. Together, they complete each other. A nice read but I find the ending abrupt and there are a few unanswered questions. They may have been left like so on purpose where answers may be found in the next book/s? Well done for a first published book.
