Chained by Ruthie Knox

Series: Roman Holiday, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Meet Ashley and Roman—complete opposites who can’t hide their attraction—in Episode 1 of Ruthie Knox’s eBook original serial, Roman Holiday.
Ashley Bowman is having a bad week. Reeling from the death of her beloved grandmother, she returns to the Florida Keys only to learn that a heartless Miami developer has gotten hold of the crappy vacation rentals she calls home. Ashley has one day to clear out before Roman Díaz destroys the only place in the world that matters to her. Chaining herself to a palm tree in the bulldozers’ path seems like a good way to stop him . . . until she realizes she should’ve brought food and water. And pants. Also, it would help if the evil developer weren’t so ridiculously hot.
The last thing Roman Díaz needs is some sun-kissed blond protester getting her picture in the newspaper and messing up his plans. He bought the property fair and square, and the resort he wants to build on the site is the key to realizing his highest ambitions. But when a hurricane blows through, Roman has to hustle Ashley to safety if he wants to protect his reputation—and that means giving in to her unreasonable demands.
Roman needs to learn a little compassion, and Ashley’s decided to teach it to him . . . even if she has to drag him all over the Eastern Seaboard to do it.

My Review:
Ruthie Knox has a talent for writing witty, sassy romance. I've known this from the very start, when she debuted Ride with Me. And as I have followed each subsequent book, this talent of her has only grown, evolved. I've yet to read one of Knox's books and be disappointed. I think it is impossible. I've liked some books more than others, sure, but even my “least favorite” has yet to hit below 3 ½ stars.
Chained, despite being a serial novella, still gets a solid 4 stars from me. Obviously it was short, but it was also fun, and in these 40 pages Knox has me wanting to beg for the rest of the story.
Roman, our hero, seems to be a cold, calculating business man. But I just know that under that facade is a sexy beast waiting to escape his past and live again. Ah, it will be good, I'm sure of it!
Ashley seems to be a bit . . . odd, chaining herself to a palm tree in protest, trying to save an old building from her childhood. I'll admit, as Knox warns readers in the beginning, she's a bit flighty, but she appears to have heart and strength and I'm curious to see how her character develops in the coming installments.
I never was a fan of serials, and I doubt I ever will be. BUT, with Ruthie Knox writing this one, I will be anxiously awaiting the next few chapters in Roman and Ashley's story. At this point, I think I would read the back of a cereal box if I knew Ruthie had written it . . . What can I say, I'm a fan! I was able to read this while waiting for an appointment, so the short format worked for me this time. Serials are not for everyone, but if you are already a fan of Ms. Knox, then you won't want to miss this. And if you've yet to try her work, perhaps this would be a nice introduction to her work.
4 STARS!
