[Pat's Review]: "Hard As It Gets"

Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye
Publisher: Avon (November 26, 2013)
Series: Hard Ink, 1
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Tall, dark, and lethal...

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge..

Pat's Review:

I have had this novel on my Kindle for a while. Seeing the second in the series is about to be released, I decided to read it. Twenty four hours later, I finished it and can't wait for Hard As You Can.  I loved this book.  It has tattooed scarred heroes,  a frightened but strong, feisty heroine, and lots of hot steamy sex.  All centered around a tattoo parlor called Hard Ink

Nick Rixey is trying to put his life back together after a special forces mission had gone very bad in Afghanistan. He nearly lost his life; he did lose several of his men, his career and reputation.  Worst of all he turned away from his friends who did survive, shutting them out of his life. He now lives with the pain of his injuries, and hatred for the man who compromised the mission, and left the survivors to bear the guilt.  He is working in his brothers tattoo shop called Hard Ink, and making a living as a process server.  A beautiful very frightened young woman shows up at the shop looking for him, holding a cryptic note from her missing brother, Charlie, asking for help finding him. He is a computer specialist who works and hacks just a tad close to being illegal.  Her name is Becca Merritt, a name that makes his stomach burn. She is the daughter of the Army officer who ruined his life.  He quickly sends her away, telling her he can't help.  But, somehow she has opened a small door Into his humanity, and he can't let it go.

Becca Merritt is an ER nurse, who has lost both parents, and her older brother to a drug overdose. She will not lose Charlie. If she has to investigate on her own she will.  Coming home from work, she enters her home, and realizes she has an intruder. She quickly dials 911 and grabs a knife to protect herself.  Suddenly Nick Rixey is there, "Mr. tall, dark and very sexy" is in her kitchen.  "Becca Merritt had brought bad news to his doorstep. The kind of bad news that reached out from the grave, grabbed you by the throat and did everything to drag you six feet under."

The suspense and action is non stop. The reunion of Nick and his team was heartwarming. A group of lost scarred men who needed each other to get through the nightmare.  This is not a cliffhanger, it comes to a satisfying conclusion, but leaves you anxiously anticipating the next book in the series.  If you like hard bodied alpha's, action and some  hot sexy scenes, you will like Hard As It Gets!
