[ARC Review]: "Getting It Right"

Getting It Right by A.M. Arthur
Publisher: Carina Press (March 16, 2015)
Series: Restoration, 1
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance

Detective Nathan Wolf might just be a junior detective, but he tackles every case with the passion that he lacks in his personal life. A series of failed relationships with women has left him still single at thirty-four—because he's too scared to admit to his longtime crush on his best friend James.

Dr. James Taggert likes to keep his profession as a psychiatrist separate from his party-animal persona. Known around the gay clubs as Tag, he's the guy who screws them, leaves them, and never looks back. But James's drinking is getting heavier, and when bad memories from the past resurface, he's close to becoming the worst version of himself.

After a drunken blackout ends in a hot and heavy make-out session with his very straight best friend, James has no memory of the steamy affair. But Nathan isn't sorry for the kisses that James can't remember. Nathan finally musters the courage to tell James how he really feels, but a life-altering event might force them apart before they can ever be together.

My Review:

In Arthur's NA series, Belonging, I couldn't wait to read more about the intriguing Tag – better known as Dr. James Taggert. As soon as I saw it go up on NetGalley, I clicked that request button so fast I was afraid I broke my poor mouse. :) James and Nate's story did not disappoint, and I finished it very quickly.

Getting It Right is very much a friends-to-lovers story. Nate and James have been best friends since college. Jame is gay; Nate straight. But during one college party of Truth or Dare, they kissed, and their feelings of wanting more were pushed to the surface, though they both pushed it back down, afraid to lose their friendship, and Nate a bit unsure of his sexuality. Now, years later, another kiss has all those feelings bursting free again, and this time they can't push them back down. Though there are a few kinks in the road, they finally navigate the tricky, but oh-so-delicious, road from long-time friends to passionate lovers.

Now, I suppose you could label this story as a “gay for you” romance, but I dislike that label. Who are we to judge why someone is attracted to a particular person, even if they're not normally attracted to other members of that gender? The friendship between these two was so strong that the GFY theme didn't bother me at all. These two strong men belonged together, made each other stronger, helped one another through their tough shit, and were extremely hot together. It's a win-win all around!

Besides the tension as James and Nate work through their changing relationship and problems in their personal lives, there's also a nice murder mystery sub-plot. I was fairly certain who the murderer was early on, but still enjoyed finding out I was right.

I'm very much looking forward to the next releases in this series, and, of course, all of Arthur's future releases. I fully admit, I'm a dedicated fan of her books and will always recommend them to other M/M fans. Getting It Right is no different, as it is a lovely friends-to-lovers story that will please any fan of the genre.

4 STARS!

I received an e-ARC of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest opinion.

You may have noticed by now, but I'm a fan of A.M.'s books. Just a bit. :D I was happy to get Tag's book (finally!) and while it wasn't my favorite of hers, it was still pretty damn good.

I do have to say, some may not like the drama/tortured hero aspect of this book, so fair warning.

Have you read A.M. Arthur before? Do you have a favorite of hers?

Enjoy!

Oh, you definitely need to read her books! Top recommends: No Such Thing and The Truth as He Knows It. But all the others are *great* too!

I love the friends to lovers plot and this one sounds good. I've only read a couple of AM's books and liked them both. I still need to read that splendid one that you recommended here.

Oh and btw, thank you for mentioning your opinion about the term 'gay for you'. I've always disliked that one too and its many times used in a negative sense. I'm with you- love is mighty personal and individual plus people might not know until THE ONE appears in their lives.
