Tempting Fate by Pamela Clare
Publisher: Pamela Clare (June 28th, 2017)
Series: Colorado High Country, 4
Genre: Contemporary Romance

A woman with no roots…

Naomi fled the cult-like nightmare of her childhood and learned to rely on one person—herself. Her resourcefulness keeps her alive during a catastrophe in the mountains, but it’s no help at all when it comes to Chaska Belcourt, the sexy EMT who saves her life. Raised to feel shame about her body and sex, she is putty in Chaska’s hands as he strips away her armor, exposing the vulnerable woman beneath, awakening desires in her that she’d been taught to ignore.

A kiss that changes everything…

Chaska Belcourt grew up on the reservation, the son of a hereditary Sun Dance chief. He left all of that behind for a new life in Colorado as an engineer with an aerospace firm and a member of the elite Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. He doesn’t share his sister’s belief that fate led him to find Naomi. But from the first moment their lips touch, he can’t get enough of her.

A love that transforms…

As the passion between them turns into something more, Chaska is forced to admit that his sister is right. There’s no other way to explain the depth of his feelings for Naomi—or the fact that he and his people might hold the key to unraveling the mysteries of her past. But she will have to learn to trust again before the two of them can find the answers she needs—and claim this once-in-a-lifetime love.

Pat's Review:

This novel has already hit my favorite of 2017. Ms. Clare writes historical novels, romantic suspense, and recently contemporary romances. Her readers, old and new love, them all. This is the fourth novel in her Colorado High Country series, following  a group of volunteer search and rescuers, their love of climbing, and the beautiful town of Scarlet Springs, Colorado.

Naomi Archer is a woman finally finding her path. She was abandoned at birth and raised by a cult-like family, who never showed love or caring. As soon as possible she left them behind. For the last five years she has been waiting tables and working on her growing handmade jewelry business. She has always loved Colorado and is finally enjoying a vacation she thought she would never have. Camping in the mountains with her own equipment and peace and quiet is what she has been working for. After her vacation, it's back to South Dakota and putting her all into creating beautiful jewelry. But her peace and quiet is abruptly interrupted by two very dangerous men with guns. She manages to escape, but is shot and injured, falling while running away. She crawls to a cave for protection.

Chaska Belcourt and his sister, Winona, are on the trail exercising their wolf Shota. Chaska is a member of the local Search and Rescue team, an EMT, and a brilliant tracker. His "side job" is working for a company as an engineer that provides info and equipment to NASA.

Suddenly Shota takes off on the trail, and disappears. Chaska and Winona follow his barking and come upon a young woman curled in a cave with serious injuries. He calls in the rescue team, paramedics and the sheriff. Naomi is transported to the local hospital and treated. Meanwhile Winona, the matchmaker, is reminding Chaska of the comment he made just before they found her.

"Creator can feel free to put her in my path anytime."

Little did he realize then what was in his path.

This beautiful story is rich with Lakota legends and history which weave seamlessly through the story. Chaska has deep feelings for his Lakota heritage and family. Naomi has no idea of hers. The only hint to Naomi's background is a small pendant she wears on a leather band around her neck. It was left in the blanket she was wrapped in when she was abandoned. This pendant becomes the secret to finding herself. I loved the history and language of the Lakota and their respect for the land, animals, and their Creator.

Oh by the way, there are a few spots that will make you laugh out loud! Thank you Ms. Clare for this beautiful love story with so much heart.

5 STARS!
