[Kame's Review]: "Only For Him"

Only For Him by Cristin Harber
Publisher: Mill Creek Press (February 24, 2015)
Series: Only, 1
Genre:New Adult Contemporary

Grayson Ford and Emma Kinglsey—close since they were kids, opposites in every way. He’s the stuff high school crushes are made of, Mister Popular, and captain of every team. She’s artsy, cute, and not in his league, though fully aware of Summerland’s "I Dream of Dating Grayson Ford" support group.

I can’t say no. The girl’s had my heart since before I knew it went missing.

He hides a life of hell. His father hates him, his mother’s gone. Emma is his only savior, yet she doesn’t know her power over him. She’s the only girl he wants, the only one he could ever tell—though he won’t.

I’m stronger, bigger, more of a man than he’ll ever be, but because I ruined his life, I’ve taken his crap, his attacks, the vulgar nature of his existence.

Until she discovers Gray’s embarrassment, his humiliation. Emma fights for him, for a chance. Theirs is a Cinderella story that she believes impossible. But as the layers peel back, it’s just a guy who needs a girl in order to keep breathing.

My mind is already doodling Mrs. Grayson Ford in imaginary notebooks. He has no clue where my head is at… But, given that I didn’t see what just happened coming, maybe I have no clue where his head is at either.

Kame's Review:

Grayson is living with pain that no one knows, and the only thing that makes it bearable is Emma. Emma is his best friend and the one person he loves in this life.  Emma and Grayson have knowing each other since they were young and she has loved him that whole time.

My heart broke for Grayson. Cristin Harber wrote Grayson in a way that he was slowing revealed as the story progressed; there are parts of him that are still a mystery and I can’t wait to understand him more. He was scared to imagine the one person who he loved could ever love him back.  Emma is artistic and talented, and has a huge heart. Her feelings that Grayson could never find someone as plain as her really resonated with me as I think there are many girls who feel that way. The closing chapter and the look into the Emma of now really intrigues me and I can’t wait to learn more of her journey.

The plot was a joy to follow and brought me back to those days in high school. I enjoyed how Cristin Harber showed us glimpses of them at different stages of their relationship and then the glimpse at now that sets us up for the next installment.

I generally avoid reading New Adult books, and even rarer read a book that could be considered a serial or one with a cliff hanger like ending. I broke that rule for Cristin Harber and I am glad I did.  I will follow this couple to the end.

I opened this novella on my Kindle to see how long it was and thought I would read only a few pages – yeah that didn’t happen. I was consumed and I barely moved until I was done. I want the next installment NOW!

Not noticing anything around you including time flying by is a sign of an engrossing book.
