[Double Review]: "Game Changer"

Game Changer by Melissa Cutler
Publisher: InterMix (May 19, 2015)
Series: Bomb Squad, 3
Genre: Contemporary Romance

The author of Undefeated and Risky Business has another sexy hero for you to meet…

Welcome to Destiny Falls, New York, home of Bomb Squad—an ice hockey team full of rugged military heroes. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has the team captain packing his bags for greener pastures, but saying good-bye to the woman who’d captured his heart is easier said than done…

After being wounded in combat, Brandon Theroux lives every day like it’s his last. He never could have imagined that the sleek mechanics of his prosthetic leg would open so many doors, including minor celebrity status as a fitness model and a well-earned reputation as a rakish playboy. The only door it hasn’t opened is the one to Harper Johnson’s bedroom.

Harper has too much self-respect to join the ranks of Brandon’s “carpe diem” conquests, but when she needs someone to keep the peace in the tavern she owns, Brandon offers his help—as long as she agrees to a very tempting trade. It isn’t long before the two realize that a deal struck between friends who can’t keep their hands off each other has the potential to be a whole lot hotter than either of them is prepared to handle…

Risky Business (#1) -- Kame and Pat

Kame's Review:

Harper and Brandon have been working real hard at avoiding their attraction.  Brandon is not the ball and chain type of guy and Harper fears an uncertain future.  Everyone around them sees that they are meant to be together.

Brandon was not one of my favorite characters in the other Bomb Squad books. I wasn’t sure if he could be redeemed and be hero worthy. He is definitely hunky enough and as his and Harper’s friendship grew he did one swoon worthy thing after another.  Harper has been a favorite since the series started and I was desperate for her to find her HEA. What I can’t believe is that Melissa Cutler made me love her more.  Not only love her but find her as inspiration. Harper must make a life changing decision, one that could have open the door for Brandon to walk away, but he walked towards her instead and was her friend and her rock.

“I, Harper Johnson, vow to seize the day and live a life of adventure and joy from this moment forward. No fear, no holding back.”

If you are looking for a book with steamy scenes every few pages this isn’t your book. This book has something more, it has a heroine choosing to live her life to the fullest and stopping for the little moments.  Romance is more than scream worthy steamy scenes, it’s the caring, the deep connection between characters. That is what makes a book burrow deep in my heart. And this one is burrowed REAL deep. Their love is selfless. The connection Harper and Brandon share raises the bar for all my other favorite book couples - definitely in my top 10. It is because of this connection that I can see myself reading this book again and again.

Harper’s “Bliss List” is something I will strive to achieve in my own life. Imagine - I read a contemporary romance book and I found a life lesson.

4 1/2 STARS!

Pat's Review:

This is the third in the series about a very special hockey team ( Bomb Squad) that plays in Destiny Falls, New York. It is a team of combat veterans, all wounded in action.

There is not as much hockey action in this novel; it focuses on Brandon Theroux and Harper Johnson, two characters that for the whole series have been circling each other. Harper is the owner of the bar where the Bomb Squad hangs out. She is also a hockey fanatic and keeps score for the games. Brandon is an amputee pursuing Harper relentlessly. He works as a model in his downtime, and is drop dead gorgeous. Harper feels she's too old for him, he's a big time player and she can't face commitment.

Harper is worried about some biker dudes escalating trouble in the bar and she's facing some serious decisions about her health. Life changing decisions. Unexpectedly Brandon tells her he is leaving Destiny Falls for Miami and participation in a reality show. He is moving on. Her heart is breaking, but she never lets him see. Brandon feels by being in the show he can open people's eyes to wounded veterans.

This story to me was extremely emotional and heartbreaking. We finally get to see the real Harper and she is awesome. Brandon also shows a completely different side to his persona.  This romance is a testament to love, honesty and forever friendships.  I couldn't put it down and it will go into my re-read pile.
