Kat's Review: Behind These Doors

Remember, since this is a Royal Pick, come back on June 28th for a chance to win an ecopy of your own!

Behind These Doors by Jude Lucens
Publisher: Greenwose Books (June 22, 2018)
Series: Radical Proposals, 1
Genre: Historical Romance -- Menage

Lucien Saxby is a journalist, writing for the society pages. The Honourable Aubrey Fanshawe, second son of an earl, is Society. They have nothing in common, until a casual encounter leads to a crisis.

Aubrey isn’t looking for love. He already has it, in his long-term clandestine relationship with Lord and Lady Hernedale. And Lucien is the last man Aubrey should want. He’s a commoner, raised in service, socially unacceptable. Worse, he writes for a disreputable, gossip-hungry newspaper. Aubrey can’t afford to trust him when arrest and disgrace are just a breath away.

Lucien doesn’t trust nobs. Painful experience has taught him that working people simply don’t count to them. Years ago, he turned his back on a life of luxury so his future wouldn’t depend on an aristocrat’s whim. Now, thanks to Aubrey, he’s becoming entangled in the risky affairs of the upper classes, antagonising people who could destroy him with a word.

Aubrey and Lucien have too much to hide—and too much between them to ignore. Rejecting the strict rules and closed doors of Edwardian society might lead them both to ruin… but happiness and integrity alike demand it.

An Edwardian Romance.

[Blog Tour Review]: "Trinity Bound"

Trinity Bound by Carrie Ann Ryan
Publisher: Self-Published (March 30th, 2012)
Series: The Redwood Pack, 3
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Menage
***May I just say that I'd
love to be that woman!***

Hannah Lewis, a rare earth witch, is taken from the only life she’s ever known. Held at her will by a sadistic wolf, she almost gives up hope that she’d ever see her real life again. But as her fellow captive, a werewolf named Reed, tries to calm her fears, she begins to feel a spark of something she never thought she’d feel – love. But is Reed, alone, enough to get her out of this dark basement so she can move on with her life?

Reed Jamenson, the artist of a werewolf Pack of Alpha males, knows instinctually that Hannah is his mate. Thus, despite their imprisonment, he will do all to protect her and then worry about their hearts. But is he strong enough to find a way for both of them to escape? And why does he feel as though something else is missing?

Josh Kolb, an ex-military human, stumbles upon Reed and Hannah and finds he must trust this new world of supernatural beings to survive. But that desire will lead the three to a triangle of attraction that will test the boundaries they all possess and its consequences in defeating the enemy. Can they all trust one another to save themselves and life as they know it? Even at the cost of their own hearts?

My Review:

To be honest, I was a bit hesitant going into Trinity Bound. I mean, I've read a few menage books before (and liked them), but they were always ones where the men wanted to share the woman, but didn't actually do anything with each other. Trinity Bound is not that kind of menage, as Reed, as I already knew, is bisexual and therefore wants Josh just as much as he does Hannah.

I was pushed out of my comfort zone with this book. And yet, I mean that in a good way because even though, in general, this type of story is not my cup of tea, Carrie Ann Ryan made it work, and I actually found myself enjoying this sexy paranormal menage. I know I won't be jumping into the many other GLTB books out there, but after being introduced to the subject just a little in this book, I'm more open to trying similar books in the future. :)

Reed was a welcome respite from all the he-man alphas (though I love a good alpha hero). He's strong, and he takes care of his own, but he's also very sensitive. As he says, he's an artist, not a fighter. Now, that's not to say that he can't fight, but his whole word doesn't revolve around it. He'll fight to keep in shape, to protect his mates and family, but otherwise he'd rather be painting.

Hannah is a witch, and though she already knows that she can heal, she finds out that she's now the Redwood Pack's Healer. This means that she can draw power from the pack's magic, as well as feel if anyone in the pack is hurt. It's a big job, but as part of the pack, she sees everyone as family, and she'll do whatever she can to help them. Beyond the basics of her character, I didn't get quiet as much from Hannah, and I felt like she was just a shadow walking around for most of the book. I do wish she had been a bit more developed, as I think she could have been a very strong heroine.

Josh, an ex-SEAL, is also a Finder, which basically means that he can track someone down if he knows them, sees their picture. He suddenly see their location in his mind. This was a helpful tool when he was a SEAL, as well as afterward he retired (it allowed him to find Reed and Hannah), but it wasn't such a gift when he was growing up...Josh takes the role of the alpha in this relationship, and although he has never had feelings for men in the past, upon meeting Reed he begins to fall for him, desire him—and Hannah, too. Obviously he's uncertain, and thinks that something is wrong with him, but as their relationship builds, he slowly begins to accept that he does have feelings for Reed, and they are just as natural as the ones he has for Hannah—and luckily just as accepted by the Pack.

The scenes between the three were scorching hot, and I wasn't disappointed in the physical aspects of their relationship at all! I liked that Ryan allowed the three to get to know each other and work up to the whole “I love you and I know we've been destined to be your mates”. It made it seem like they did have a choice in their mates, rather than it being completely up to Fate. While I did want a bit more from their relationship outside of the bedroom, the abundance of hot steamy sex almost made up for it. Almost.

While Josh, Reed and Hannah were discovering their trinity bound, the Centrals are still on the hunt, and they're not working alone anymore. Not only do they have the help of a demon, but they're also getting help (dark magic) from a few witches, too. Can the Redwood Pack stand against all three threats? Can Reed and the others find out how to help Josh with his demon bite, seal their bound, and destroy the Centrals—or will it all come crashing down on them?

4 STARS! A well done menage story with a paranormal twist, Trinity Bound was surprisingly good, although I had my doubts when I first picked it up. I'm interested to see what happens next, and I can't wait to read Adam's story (he's been through so much), though I think it's Maddox's book that I'm most anxious to read! This series is turning into quiet a ride, with such a wide diversity of characters and storylines mixing together, and new twists to keep us interested. While I did enjoy Reed's book, there were a few spots that irked me, though they weren't anything huge. I didn't like how some phrases were repeated over and over again (like their scents—almost every time Reed saw/thought about Hannah, he mentioned her “honey and bitter apple scent”, which got old after the fourth or fifth time). I would still highly recommend this book, as well as the entire series, to any paranormal fan out there. But be warned: this one is very steamy, and there is not only m/m sex scenes, but also anal play and some pretty wild m/f/m playtime, too. If none of that bothers you, then be sure to pick this up! And if, like me, you've never really gotten into the m/m romances, give this one a try, as Ryan does a great job at showing us the complex relationship between the three characters, and the action between Reed and Josh wasn't nearly as awkward as I feared it would be. :)

[NOR Review]: "The Ever Knight"

Title: The Ever Knight
Author: Geogria Fox
Series: The Conquerors, 1
Publisher: Evernight Publishing
Publication Date: July 4, 2011
Genre: Historical Erotica (novella)
Summary (Amazon.com):
A Saxon Thane’s daughter, born with mystical healing strength, must choose between two lusty Norman knights, half-brothers, each intent on claiming her for their own. One man has claimed her dowry; the other has claimed her virginity. One man is dying of a battle wound and the other has scars that can’t be seen by the naked eye. Both brothers need her healing touch. Both brothers need her.
And she needs them.
Jisella always knew that one day her Ever Knight would arrive—the soul she’s loved since time began. Yet he’s taken a long time to find her in this life and now she’s not sure which of these handsome Knights is the one for whom she’s waited.

The brothers are all too happy to compete for their lady’s favors. Perhaps there is only one fair decision. Perhaps she can have both, if they might be persuaded to share.

My Review:

Locked away in a convent for most of her life, Jisella knows her futures lies in whatever marriage her father arranges for her. But she hungers for passion, for lust, and most importantly for her Ever Knight, her soul mate.

Born on All Hallow's Eve, her “kind” are called Children of the Full Moon. Magical healing powers are theirs to use, regenerated once a year on that special day. They mate for eternity, finding the one soul mate that will stay with them forever, even beyond death. Jisella looks for her Ever Knight, and when a group of Norman soldiers come to the convent, she's sure she has found him.

Sneaking out of the tower they are kept in, she goes to Remy, the Norman she has set her eyes, heart, and body on. But a quick roll in the hay (literally), isn't all that she wants. She wants more—more passion like she just experienced, along with a promise from her Knight that he will take her away from this prison the next day, allowing her to avoid the upcoming marriage that has been arranged for her. Little does either one of them know at the time, but she is the one came for, the one he will be taking away tomorrow—back to his half-brother...Jisella's intended.

When morning comes, Remy wakes to find his wounds completely healed—and the seductress from All Hallow's Ever gone. As he prepares his men to ride out, with his brother's intended in tow, who should appear but Renard himself. As the two men head over to meet the mysterious bride-to-be, both men are in for a shock—Remy because he recognizes her as the same woman he just deflowered mere hours before, Renard because instead of an ugly betrothed he finds a temptation beyond all else...

Instead of being angry at his brother for taking his virginal intended, Renard is simply intrigued, and still finds that he wants her more than anything else. Remy can't stop thinking about her, or their night of passion. Whatever will the men do? The answer is obvious: let Jisella decide whom she wants, of course! But she can't make this decision lightly—both men call to her, potential soul mates, her elusive Ever Knight. She demands one thing before she makes her final decision: a (thorough and intense) test drive with each of the brothers. But even after countless attempts with the brothers, she's still not sated. She can only make one choice then: both of them. Neither man argues with this answer, as they both know she is the only one that can satisfy their desires. Her Ever Knight comes in the form of two halves which combine to make her whole.

3.5 STARS! A very heated novella, The Ever Knight does not come in the form of a traditional happily ever after, though it fits the characters perfectly nonetheless. Passions run hot and deep in this book, both when the brothers share Jisella and when they take her separately. The storyline was a bit rushed and underdeveloped for my tastes, and there seemed to be times during the story when the writing didn't flow smoothly, but instead read as if someone had cut off a few pages between scenes. However, despite these minor drawbacks, The Ever Knight is still a quick erotica tale that will no doubt please many readers even if it left me feeling a bit unfulfilled overall. I still look forward to reading the next two in the Conquerors Series to see what else this author has up her sleeves. I'd pick up Georgia Fox's novels any day for the covers alone—they're eye catching and very well done. I'll be sure to look for more of Fox's work when I want a spicy menage to curl up with!
