My Review:

As much as I love fantasy novels, reading a gem of a contemporary like Nightingale Way reminds me why I really read books, romances in particular: to feel, to experience. This book didn't need shifters or magic to keep me interested. Instead a story was told to me, a story about love, second chances, life and healing. A story that touched me, a story I could relate to, though I've never been in any of the situations that Cat or Jack were in. A story that made me laugh, made me cry, and made my heart break. But most importantly, this story showed how love can truly heal—love not only from a lover, but friends, family and neighbors as well.

Nightingale Way is the first book I've read from Ms. March, and for that I am truly sorry. I loved her writing, her characters and the connection between all the residents of this small, quaint Colorado town. I will be putting March's books on my auto-buy list, and I'll be setting aside some time to read the previous books in this series, followed by a reread of Nightingale Way. I am anxious to learn more about Eternity Springs, especially regarding the four couples who have already been healed by this town. Not to mention the town's secret past... :)

If you are looking for a great romance, one of those rare books where you want to simply crawl inside the novel and never leave, this is the one for you! Nightingale Way is sweet, romantic, charming, and even provides more than a few laughs. Just be sure to have a few tissues around; this well-written tale provides the reader with a captivating emotional ride. Come join the fun in Eternity Springs, and let the magic of the community heal you, body and soul!

Sometimes love simply isn't enough to hold a marriage together. Or is it...?

Jack Davenport and Catherine Blackburn married for love. But after a few years life began to drive a stake through their marriage. Between his dangerous job, one that he is more dedicated to than anything else, and Catherine's issues with her mother (Jack's boss), thing's turned rough. But when Cat lost their first child, it pretty much sealed their fate—divorce.

Now, more than 5 years since they separated, Jack's job has brought them back together. After uncovering a local dog fighting ring, and reporting it on her infamous blog, Catherine's life is suddenly in danger. Hiding in Eternity Springs while the arsonist is found, Cat finds herself slowly coming to terms with the fact that she still has feelings for Jack. And it appears he does as well. Can they work through their past, work around his job and the death of their marriage and baby to reunite? Or will the past tear them apart—for good.

This was truly a wonderful contemporary, and I am only sorry that I didn't wait to enjoy the whole series rather than just jumping in! :)

[NOR Review]: "Master of Darkness"

Master of Darkness by Angela Knight
Publisher: Berkley (August 7, 2012)
Series: The Mageverse, 9
Genre: Paranormal Romance

In the final book of New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight's Mageverse, two werewolves must save humanity from a madman, despite their mutual distrust--and growing passion...

Like her father, she's a werewolf with magical abilities, but after years of abuse from the Alphas in her family, she is determined to stop Warlock from spreading his poison throughout the werewolf population.

Born to a long line of cops, William Justice thinks that protecting Miranda is his chance to redeem himself for not being able to stop Warlock's manipulation of the werewolves into war. But despite Justice's insistence, Miranda has no interest in trusting another dominant Alpha, even if the sexual tension between them is enough to set her aflame.

As Warlock rallies his forces and sets out to destroy Avalon, Miranda and Justice will need to learn how to trust each other--before the spark between them dies along with all of Magekind...

My Review:

Years ago, Angela Knight created the Mageverse series. Now, after 8 books, it all ends in Master of Darkness. Any fan of this series will be sad to see it end, but happy with the way it turned out. Knight has done it yet again, creating one hell of a sexy novel, one with a fantastic storyline, a magical world (or two) and great characters!

I loved everything about Master of Darkness! I've been a devoted fan since book one, and I look forward to rereading this entire series for years to come—a sure sign of an amazing author!

If you have yet to enter Knight's Mageverse world, you don't know what you are missing! This series is a must read—sexy, unique, any fantasy lover's dream! However, I must warn that this is a series that needs to be read in order; so if you decided to start these books—and you should!—start from the beginning and work your way up to Master of Darkness. You won't regret it!

When your father is Warlock, the evil sorcerer trying to destroy the entire Mageverse world, life is anything but easy. Miranda's been tortured by him her whole life, and at the age of four he even put a spell on here which limits her magic and makes her fear him (and any other Alpha Males). She's nothing like Warlock though, and she wants only to kill him before he finally destroys everything she loves—and then kills her.

Justice may be a Dire Wolf now, but he's still a cop at heart—protecting the innocent no matter what. Miranda has become his life, the one woman he wants to create a Spirit Link with, and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Can he save her, defeat Warlock, and come to terms with his new powers—before they kill him?

Master of Darkness may be the finale for this series, but I see a spinoff series starting (soon, I hope!). Angela Knight is a very talented author, and I look forward to her future books, regardless of the series they belong to!

I can't tell you enough how much I love this series--it's just so well done, so sexy, and so different from others out there. King Arthur legends, vampires and shapeshifters--yum! If you have not tried this series yet, what are you waiting for? Start with book one though--it's better when read in order!

Enjoy!

[NOR Review]: "Deadly Descendant"

Deadly Descendant by Jenna Black
Publisher: Pocket Books; (April 24, 2012)
Series: Nikki Glass, 2
Genre: Urban Fantasy
An ancient evil is unleashed in the modern world— unless one fearless P.I. can hunt it down. . . . Nikki Glass, Immortal Huntress, returns in this new novel in the acclaimed series by Jenna Black.

As a living descendant of Artemis the Huntress, private investigator Nikki Glass knows how to track someone down. But when an Oracle shows up, warning the Descendants about wild dog attacks in Washington, D.C., Nikki is afraid it might be a trap. The Olympians believe the “dogs” are really jackals, controlled by a blood-crazed descendant of the Egyptian death-god Anubis. Whatever. . . . If Nikki hopes to muzzle Dogboy, she’s got to catch him in the act. But when she stakes out a local cemetery, she ends up face-to-snout with a snarling pack of shadow-jackals whose bite is worse than their bark. These hellhounds are deadly—even for an immortal like Nikki. “Dog” spelled backward may be “god,” but that won’t stop Nikki from teaching these old gods some new tricks. Like playing dead.

Where to Buy*:

My Review:

I love the idea of this series—I'm always looking for unique parnormals, especially ones with gods and goddesses. Deadly Descendant definitely fits the bill! Nikki is a tough heroine, yet one who isn't completely sure who she is, what she has to do. I really enjoyed reading her story, and I look forward to future books in this series!

Deadly Descendant is book two in the Nikki Glass series. I knew this when I picked it up, but, not having the first book, I decided to just jump right in—hoping it would work out and I'd catch up later. Overall, I wasn't too lost in the book. However, there were definitely parts where I felt a bit left out, as I hadn't read Dark Descendant. Liberi, Olympians, Descendants—I'm still trying to wrap my head around the differences between them. I think this would have been much clearer to me if I had simply waited to read book 1. I've learned my lesson now!

Who needs another vampire/demon hunter? Come join Nikki Glass as she learns about her godly blood and tries to figure out her future, her destiny. Action-packed, unique and very intense, Deadly Descendant is a great escape from the usual books on the market. This may have been my first Jenna Black book, but it won't be my last.

P.I. Nikki Glass suddenly finds herself searching for more than just your average scumbag. Now she's tracking a murderer, one who uses death magic in the form of jackals to maul the victims. The murderer is a descendant of the old Egyptian god, Anubis. Yes, that god--The god of death, which just makes the situation even worse, if possible. Can she find and stop him before it is too late?

Did I mention Nikki's a descendant of Artemis? Yeah, welcome to her world....

My Review:
Laurel McKee may be a new author to me, but she is now officially on my list for wickedly sexy historicals!

One Naughty Night lives up to its title (again...and again...and, well, you get the point)! As the first book in McKee's new series, we are introduced to the very interesting theater family, the St. Claires, and the family they've been feuding with for centuries, the titled Huntingtons. Based on how entertaining this book was, I have no doubt this will be a great series to come!

Lily and Aidan are perfect for one another. Both are more complex than it seems, and very different from what Society thinks they are. I loved Aidan, he was a hero the reader can lust for. And Lily was a great heroine, one that many readers, including myself, would be thrilled to have as a friend. Watching the two finally realize they love each other—ah, great times!

Banter and sparks both fly wildly when they meet, and only increase as the pages turn. There isn't a lukewarm moment to be found anywhere in this book; this is one fiery novel, and I loved every moment of it!

Favorite Quote^:
“I must be mad, then, for I like your arrogance. You're always who you truly are. You never pretend.”

“And you shouldn't either.” Aidan lay down beside her on the pillows, his body stretched out so that he curled around her protectively, and bent his head to kiss her shoulder. “You should never be anyone but you, Lily. Just as you are.”

4.5 STARS! If you enjoy your historicals with fire and wickedly sexy romance, then One Naughty Night is the perfect book to pick up. I am anxious to continue the St.Claires story, to see who falls next, and in the meantime I will be picking up McKee's previous novels.

^Quote belongs solely to the author. I do not claim it in anyway.

Book 1: Heart of Darkness

My Review:

Chaos Burning was my first time sampling Lauren Dane's work. I've seen her various books for years, have put many on my list, but this paranormal of hers is the first one I've ever read. My feelings upon finishing the book were a bit...uncertain. In my opinion, it was only an 'okay' read. That is, it wasn't one of those books that you can't put down, but it also wasn't a book that left a bad taste in my mouth. Instead, it was just, well, average. And that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Lark Jaansen, our heroine for this journey, is definitely a tough gal, no doubt about that. She knows how to handle herself, and her job, as well as protect and defend those around her. And that's great—there's nothing I love better than a strong heroine. But it's not just physical strength that I look for, and while Lark had plenty of that, as a character, I personally didn't feel that she was a well-rounded one. She was a bit flat, and while I wasn't ready to kick her to the curb, I also wasn't ready to call her my new BFF. And that's a bit of a disappointment for me.

Simon Leviathan's an alpha male, a Lycian who has been alive for over 600 years. He's turned more than a few heads during his time, but he's never met his mate, the one he wants to mark as his—until he begins to work with Lark. Suddenly the only thing he wants to do is take her, claim her, show the world—and his pack—that she's his, and always will be. But she's not going to give herself over without first getting to know him, including learning what saying “yes” entitles.

Although usually I'm all for sexy alpha males (especially shapeshifters of any kind), Simon was about as flat as Lark, and in the end I wasn't dying to chase her off and take him for myself. Again, another disappointment, as I think falling for the hero is one of the best things that come from reading romance novels. I was simply left wanting more from the characters, Simon and Lark especially. If I don't absolutely love the hero and heroine, it's hard to truly enjoy the rest of the book. Perhaps that's just me though...

The world building and fantasy action going on in Chaos Burning was pretty good. But as this is the second in this series, and only the first one that I have read, I felt like I was missing a lot of critical information, things that make the story smoother and more enjoyable to read. In that case, perhaps if I had simply read the series in order, I may have liked it better and gave it a higher rating—who knows? Either way, I think it's best to start this series from the beginning, just in case.

3 STARS! Although it didn't blow my mind, Chaos Burning was still a likeable enough paranormal romance, one with plenty of fantasy creatures (from witches to shapeshifters to Fae of all sorts) and even a good deal of steamy loving! I can't say that I didn't like the book—I did. But it just didn't grab my attention, and what should have taken me but a day or two to read turned into almost a week. For this reader, it wasn't a hit, but it also wasn't a failure by any means. I will still be recommending this book to others, and I'll still come back and try another Dane novel in the future. But for now, this one was just “okay” and I was hoping for a “wow”.

My Review:

Maeve Greyson's newest release, Eternity's Mark, combines the fantasy world of dragons—excuse me, Draecna—and the wild beauty of Scotland, creating a unique story, and one that will please many!

I was intrigued by the story, the fantasy world created and the Draecnas. However, the book ended up as a bit of a disappointment for me.

The story was not evenly paced. The time-line was a bit hard for me to follow at times, and while the first few chapters did a fair job at starting the story out, by the end it felt rushed, with pieces missing. Still, the premise behind Eternity's Mark was good, and I only wish there had been more to it, as it left me wanting.

The romance, however, was the biggest disappointment. I just didn't see the connection between Hannah and Taggart. The love was too quick to build, and wasn't based on much (that I could see). I wanted to see their relationship develop, not just the one-time lovin' and then they were mated for life. The connection just seemed forced, and also left me wanting.

3.5 STARS! Eternity's Mark had a lot of promise, and I loved reading about this new “dragon” fantasy world, but overall I felt that things were simply missing from the story. While I still liked it, it did lower my rating. I will still be looking for future books by Greyson. I will also recommend Eternity's Mark to other readers who may enjoy this fantasy novel with a slight Scottish flair!

My Review:
Another installment in the bestselling YA series, Morganville Vampires, another twist in the ongoing story. Black Dawn continues the story that was started when Claire Danvers was only sixteen and a newbie to Morganville. Fast-forward a few years and not only is she no longer quiet as naive and quiet, but she may be the only one able to save the town—both humans and vampires alike—from the terrible nightmare that is the draug.

There is just so much happening in this book, new twists and turns, new problems that arise and new terrors that form. It's not something that can be described or summarized—you simply have to read it. And while a person could read this book, or any of the others, out of order, I would still highly recommend that you read this series from start to finish to get the full enjoyment out of it.

I remember when this series first started. Claire was a heroine that I could stand behind, she was smart and driven to succeed, she was quiet, but yet able to stand up when the situation called for it. But as the series went on, I think we lost some of her unique character traits. She's different, changed—and I'm not completely sure that's a good thing. I miss the old Claire, the one that first drew me to this series.

Ms. Caine knows how to draw a story out, to fill it with suspense and edge-of-your-seat thrills, while still throwing in a few good laughs here and there. It's one of the reasons why I enjoy her books. But I think the best part of Black Dawn was the relationship moments between Shane and Claire—and they were few and far between. I wish there had been more, because what was there was great. This book, like all the others, was filled with action. But it didn't quiet hold my full attention—maybe I'm just waiting for Claire and her friends to get their HEA, and it seems like instead a new problem is always getting thrown in their path. I'll be honest—their life really sucks right now!

4 STARS! If you are a fan of this series, like I am, then you'll love Black Dawn. If you have yet to read this series, I would suggest starting with book one, rather than just jumping right in. Caine does it again, giving her readers another Morganville Vampire book filled with trouble and thrills, suspense and action, not to mention a bit of romance and laughter thrown in, too. It's not my favorite book in the series, but it's still a really good choice for a day of reading. I can only hope that we get the finale for this series soon; I think the characters deserve their happily ever after—or at least a break from all the problems that come with living in Morganville, Texas. :)

My Review:

As the second book in the Lords of Midnight series, Too Tempting to Resist proves yet again that Cara Elliott has a true talent for historical romances. Ripe with wit and banter, feisty heroines and sexy heroes, this series is a keeper for sure!

Gryffin, Lord Haddan, is seen by all of London as a rogue, a rake of the worse sort. And while he and his two friends are not as much a stickler for the rules of Society as the rest of the ton, neither are they as bad as the gossip sheets paint them as.

A gentleman's club/brothel is no place to meet a proper lady—and yet that is where he first sets eyes on Lady Eliza Brentford. Full of fire and able to hold her own against Gryffin, Eliza is no silly debutante—and Gryffin's intrigued by her. She is no ordinary lady, after all. A few months later, when he has the chance to go to Leete Abbey (her home), he jumps at the chance. Even though he can't stand her horrible pup of a brother, he agrees to join Leete's party just to see Eliza again.

But her presence proves to be too tempting....can he convince her that there is nothing wrong with them sharing in some entirely too wicked, but completely consensual, fun together? And is that really all he wants it to be?

I can tell you the exact moment that I fell for Gryffin. It was when Eliza discovers his dragon tattoo, which curls around his belly button and continues down towards...well, I'm sure you can guess. :) This was enough to make me drool over him, and I would have gladly pushed Eliza out of the way to have my wicked way with him! Of course, his wit, charm, and caring nature helped not only Eliza to fall for him, but myself as well.

Eliza was great, quite outspoken and brave, trying to follow her dreams in a world where men rule. I only wish she had stood up and tried to control her brother more—she easily had more courage than he. I also liked her friend, “Gussie”--she was a hoot, an older woman with a taste for slightly bawdy talk with Eliza. Gotta love the wicked old woman!

4 STARS! A charming tale, full of plenty of light moments and sexy downtime, Too Temping to Resist is a quick read, and one that any historical fan will love. I simply cannot wait to finally read Cam's story—he's always been a bit mysterious, off scouring the seedy parts of Town and acting innocent about it later. Plus, while Gryffin has the yummy dragon tattoo, Cam has an earring, much like a dashing pirate. Count me in!

My Review:

Dragons? Check. Great storyline? Check. Yummy alpha-males? Check! Scorching romance? Check, check, and check! Fury of Fire delivers in all these areas and so many more.

Bastian is the leader of the Nightfury dragon clan, and as such he must be the one to set the example for his warriors to follow. When he realizes that it's time to start procreating and increasing their ranks (which are dangerously low, especially with all the trouble the Razorbacks are starting lately), it is up to him to step forward first.

It should be simple, right? Find a woman during the Meridian (a magical date for the dragons, the one time that they can get a woman pregnant—regardless of her fertility time) and show her a good time. But that's not the end of it—the woman will become pregnant with no problem...but she won't survive the son's birth. Son, you say? Yes, they can only breed more men, there is no such thing as a woman dragon. How can he love a woman, knowing that she will die a horrible death in just a few short months? The Razorbacks do it all the time, but they have no hearts, no mercy. Bastian and his men aren't like that, and they fear mating with a woman during this time. But no more—this time, Bastian is going to do it. It's for the fate of his kind, the continuation of his species. But that doesn't mean it will be any easier for him to handle emotionally.

And when he finds Myst, who practically bleeds pure white energy (which dragons “feed” on from the human females), he realizes that he is lost—heart, body, and soul to the strong and beautiful woman. It's only three days until the Meridian—if he takes her, she will become pregnant. And just like he knows that he won't be able to stay away from her during that time, he also knows she will die in labor. That is, unless the files in their archive or Myst's understanding of modern medicine and genetics can save her—before it is too late.

This book rocked! I loved Bastian, who is a total alpha-male, one who will do anything for his men—and his woman! I also loved meeting the other Nightfuries, and I can't wait to read their stories. This was a fantastic ride, one full of fantasy and action, not to mention enough passion and desire to set the pages on fire—let me tell you, once you go dragon, you'll never go back! :)

^Favorite “Sweet” Quote:

For all his physical strength, he was the weakest of their pairing. The most needy, the one begging without words to be taken..used hard and loved long. He wanted to be mastered—at the mercy of his female while she demanded everything from him.

See? Now, tell me the truth—don't you want to take Myst's spot and never let Bastian go? He's so strong, so protective—but when it comes to his woman, he's willing to admit that he needs her, that he doesn't want to go on without her. It's killing him inside, the thought that by taking her like he wants, he's guaranteeing her death. But how can he stay away? Plus, it's the same for Myst, and while on one hand she wants to return to her old life, she knows that she can't leave him, doesn't want to anyway.

Another quote that I really liked is much more simple. When he opens up for her, shows her how he feels and what his emotions are like in regards to her, she's a bit knocked over by the discovery. Her reply? “I see you.” And while, yes, this reminded me so much of the movie “Avatar”, it wasn't a problem (though I'm not sure if that is what the author was wishing for or not). Truly, when you read this book, there are just so many great quotes and passages to choose from, these ones I mention are only the tip of the iceberg.

^Favorite “Spicy” Quote:

“Myst...baby.” His erection pulsed. He arched, an instant away from orgasm. “I'm going to come. I can't...Jesus...I'm going to...oh, fuck.”
“Ssh...settle down.”

He drew a desperate breath, throbbing hard, on the verge and then—

A miracle happened.

His body calmed, obeying his female without question.

Bastian shuddered. Holy shit. How had she done that..with nothing more than a whispered command? A moment ago, he'd been a nanosecond from losing it. Now? The urgency no longer ruled him. His fire was banked, but burning...leaving him hard and ready, but in control again.

Awed by her, Bastian whispered her name.

There were a lot of spicy quote contenders to choose from, but this one stuck out the most. We get to see how out of control he is while with her, how much he wants her, needs her. And yet, with just her touch, her soothing command, he's back in control. The passion still burns high between them, and it's not always gentle or sweet, but he's able to hold off and give her everything he can before he gives her himself. It's kind of sweet, but oh so spicy! It made me shudder a bit from the power of this passage, and I loved that!

4.5 STARS! Kicking off a new shifter series, Fury of Fire was an amazing ride from start to end. And while the ending leaves a bit to be desired, I'm confident that the next books in this series are going to be just as great, continuing the story of these strong, sexy warriors as they fight not only the Razorbacks, but their own fate—can they find their mates and save them from dying while bearing their young? A sexy new voice in paranormal romance is on the scene, and this is one series that you will not want to miss, one full of fantasy and love that burns brighter than any flame you can imagine! Here's my final word on it: put Callahan on your list. I promise you won't regret it!

^Quotes belongs solely to the author. I do not claim them in anyway.

Book 1: My Beloved

My Review:

When love spans hundreds of miles, across two countries, and connects two lost souls long before they will ever physically meet, you know that something special is in the works. My True Love is truly something special!

The daughter of the laird of Dunniwerth, Anne Sinclair's childhood was a bit hard, though to an outsider they would think she had it all. And in many ways she did—but she wasn't spoiled by it, and her parents taught her to be giving, to be kind, and to be a hard worker. But at times having parents that expected so much from her was hard. It was during times like these that Anne wished for someone to talk to.

One night, when Anne was only 8, she had a vision, and in this vision she clearly saw a young boy, sitting in a castle, hearing the cries of his mother laboring in another room. Soon a woman comes in and tells the boy that his mother has passed on, as well as the babe. Anne watches as this strong boy, so young and yet already so old, breaks down and cries. Touched by the emotions and the connection she feels with this unknown boy, Anne begins to cry ,too. For the rest of her life, she continues to see visions of the boy—always random, always one sided. But as she grows, the boy does too, and by the time she is in her early 20's, she's watched Stephen grow up to become a man. She loves him, yet she's never really met him, and he has no idea she even exists.

When her father begins pushing for her to marry, she decides it is time to take her life into her own hands, and off she goes to find Stephen. Even if a relationship doesn't come out of it, she has to see him, touch him, at least once before she returns home and settles into a life that her parents want her to have.

Stephen, now the earl of his family's castle is intrigued by the stubborn lass that shows up on his grounds. What is it about her that has captured his attention so? She seems to know him, recognized him first thing and knew of his childhood hiding place—is she a witch, to know so such things? He doesn't believe so, but that still doesn't explain the way she acts, nor the words he has caught her saying (such as “I've seen you my whole life”, though they've never met). Regardless, he finds himself starting to care for her, and he wants to protect her, to get out of the trouble he is in with the crown so that he might have a chance at a life with her. But will her secret tear them apart—or will it be her father who keeps them apart?

I can't say enough great things about this book! It simply blew me away. Within the first few pages, I was hooked, and for the first time in a long time, I entered into a story where I didn't want to put it down. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough (cliché, but so very true!), and I was even teary eyed during a few of the more emotional scenes. I could feel the love between Anne and Stephen, first as she was growing up (and loved the image of the boy), then later as she finally realized that regardless of the visions she had of him, she loved the man he had become, not just the child she wanted to comfort.

The writing was excellent; Karen has a talent for words and the characters were very nicely done. I loved many of the quotes and passages from this book, and while most of them are more meaningful when reading the entire story, they are also very potent on their own. A rare treat, and something that not many authors can do.

As to the characters, I enjoyed Anne, she was strong, but not too pushy, and she thought of others, not just her self. Stephen was much the same way, very responsible and caring to the people around him, loyal to the very end. But I also enjoyed many of the secondary characters as well, such as Richard and Hannah (who have a very nice budding romance during this book, though they bicker so much it's sometimes hard to tell). Hannah was great, and I loved her dry wit and her jibes at Richard (though we know that she really likes him deep down—and since he knows it too, he takes what she says in stride). I think some of my favorite quotes/passages from the story come just as often from Hannah and Richard as they do from Anne and Stephen. That's always a sign of a good book, when even the sideline characters can produce as much interest and love from the reader as the hero and heroine.

5 STARS! Sweeping romance combines with passion and desire to create a love story that practically leaps off the pages! My True Love delivers on all accounts, and reminded me again of why I fell in love with historical romances all those years ago. I've read a few of Ranney's books before, and while I liked them, this one is, by far, my favorite to date. I will be grabbing her next book when it hits shelves, and I highly suggest that you put her on your list as well. A lushly written historical with great characters, deep romance, true love and a great deal of passion thrown in, My True Love is the perfect book to curl up with!
