[Throwback Review]: "Hedging His Bets"

Jen's got another Throwback Thursday Review for you. This time for a silly paranormal that's sadly not worth the (outrageous!) price.

Hedging His Bets by Celia Kyle
Publisher: Pronoun (January 26, 2017) Republished
Series: Honey and Fur, 1
Genre: Paranormal novella

Honey loves running her bar and grill, catering to humans and shifters alike. But there are two things that dim her love of the place: cocky assholes who think they own the world, and cocky assholes who think they can flex their muscles and wreck her bar when throwing a temper tantrum. Unfortunately, the drop-dead gorgeous, hotter than hot, shifter man she secretly loves is both.

Blake wants the curvaceous, gorgeous Honey in his bed. Now. He’s lusted (but not loved, let’s get that straight) after the luscious woman for months. True, he looks like a bad-boy biker mixed with a player and, yeah, he’s broken a few things in her bar… But only because the guys were hitting on his girl. With no hope of winning her over in sight, he does what any red-blooded werehedgehog would do in his position. He lies.

Some live on memories…

Almost dying during a pack uprising has a way of shaking things up. I’m no longer Mr. Laid Back now that there’s an itch under my skin I can’t scratch.

On a volunteer mission that goes beyond the walls of our compound, we enter the territory of a pack long thought dead, and find ourselves on the business end of their spears.

What I’m not prepared for is what I find within their walls—The one shifter I never thought I’d see alive, the one I’d mourned twice, the one I’d always loved. He is alive, and if I have anything to do with it, he’ll stay that way. But he’s got secrets, and exposing them could lead us to an enemy worse than the bloodthirsty undead shifters wanting to kill us all…

[ARC Review]: "How to Run with a Naked Werewolf"

How to Run with a Naked Werewolf by Molly Harper
Publisher: Pocket Books (December 31, 2013)
Series: Naked Werewolf, 3
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Caleb Graham is a werewolf by nature, a tracker by profession. He uses his “extra gifts” to find people, and not always in the most legal or ethical manner. He doesn’t care what they’ve done, or who wants them found, as long as his considerable fee is paid. He likes his life simple and uncomplicated.

Anna Moder, former physician to Caleb’s pack, happens across Caleb during a particularly violent “negotiation” that has left him bloodied and unconscious. She helps him, despite the fact that he’s cost her a car, so he insists that she stay with him on the road for a while. As they grow closer, Anna looks past the gruff exterior and and the questionable job to thoroughly decent werewolf underneath.

Anna – who is careful to edit her involvement with Caleb’s pack from their conversations – doesn’t talk about why a nice girl wants to live in the middle of frozen nowhere, but she’s obviously on the run from something. When Anna’s past collides with Caleb’s current assignment from one of his sleazier contacts, Caleb finally has to make a choice—protect his job…or his potential mate?

My Review:

I'm a huge fan of shifter novels. Hence the reason I started “Shifter-a-Thon-Read-a-Long” with Wickedly Delicious. But as much as I love this genre, the one thing I love the most is finding a new author, a new world to explore, and especially a new twist on the shifters. I'm happy to say I found all of these things in The Awakening: Aidan. I loved this book!

Niles created a wonderful shifter world, one that I'm dying to visit again and again! Niles, you now have a new fan for life!

Oh Aidan, I love you! I loved how he wanted to fight for his mate, and even for his friends when they needed him to. But most importantly, I loved how he took the time to woo Jaylin. Aidan's beast wanted nothing more than to claim here and mark here; this instinct was something he could have easily given in to. He fought it instead, holding it off until he could convince Jaylin that she should claim him, accept him as her mate. I loved that; it's not just the male who does the claiming, and in fact the most important claim in the relationship is her claim for him. Without it, there can be no HEA.

Jayline was a strong heroine, and I enjoyed watching her struggle to come to terms with her feelings for Aidan. She's worked with shifters for years, seen her own mother's pain and loss after her mate died; Jaylin knows how the bond between mates can cause more pain than anything else. But after meeting Aidan, she slowly begins to question her stand on the matter. After talking to Rafael, a Wydowed shifter and friend of Aidan, she begins to see the bond in a new light—but can she convince Aidan that she wants him for eternity?

Really, I can't tell you how much I loved this book. I was completely engrossed in the story, my stomach in knots, hoping everything would work out for Aidan and Jaylin!

4.5 STARS! Not only will I be begging Niles for the next book in this series, but I will be recommending this one to other shifter fans as well! For a sexy, yet heart-warming read, this is the book to pick up! You will fall for Aidan, cheer for Jaylin, and want to stay in this new world Niles has created.

[Review]: "Pride Mates"

Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley
Publisher: Berkley (July 5, 2011)
Series: Shifters Unbound, 1
Genre: Paranormal Romance

CALL OF THE WILD

To most, they are animals even when in human form. They are to be collared and kept on the fringes of society, scorned because they are feared, hated for their extraordinary powers. And attorney Kim Fraser has to go right into the heart of their lair.

It is her job to defend those in need. But there is absolutely nothing defenseless about Liam Morrissey. His soft Irish lilt and feline grace can t disguise his sheer strength. Nor can the silver chain at his throat, designed to control the aggression of his kind, completely reassure her that this man has been tamed.

Yet when a feral shifter begins to stalk them both, Liam is the only one she trusts with her life. She'll let him claim her for her protection, for her pride, and for a passion that knows no bounds.

My Review:

I've been wanting to read this series for a while now, and when Wickedly Delicious and I decided to start the Shifter-a-Thon-Read-a-Long group, we knew this had to be our first pick. I'm glad that we picked Pride Mates; I must have my dose of shifter romance, and this one delivered just what I needed!

I've read Jennifer Ashley's historical, and loved them. There's just something about her writing style and voice that I love, no matter the genre she picks. Pride Mates was very easy to read, an enjoyable shifter tale with just enough humor to make the reader laugh, enough smexy time to leave a smile on the reader's face, and an actual story to it. All very important components! :)

“Liam, I cannot bring a shifter to work with me.”

Liam lifted his sunglasses, blue eyes dancing. “I don’t see any signs: ‘No Shifters Allowed.’ ’Shifters Must Keep Off the Grass.’ ’Absolutely No Territory Marking Anywhere.’”

Or this:

“How can you just sit there?”

“I usually sit when I’m drinking coffee. Or I lean against something. If I lie on my back, it goes down the wrong way.”

I found Ashley's Shifters to be a mix of "something new" and "typical shifter", and I mean that in a good way! I loved seeing the ShifterTowns (the strong sense of community and family), though I didn't like that they were being outcast and put into such camps in the first place. I thought the Collars were a new twist, and I want to know more about this world, and all the characters in it!

What I really loved was that fact that although Kim and Liam may have become mates before the half-way mark, it definitely took until the very last page for them to reach their HEA. Sure, Liam had the need to mark her, to claim her, but he didn't love her yet, and she didn't love him. Which was great; often times "insta-love" from mating leaves a sour taste in my mouth, so I was happy to see these two work through the stages, from friends to true mates.

The scene towards the very end, where Liam must decide between the Collar and "freedom", was very powerful. This scene was important in many ways, including helping to place that final brick in the foundation of Liam and Kim's relationship. I'll admit, I was nervous, wondering how it would turn out, but I think I knew all along what Liam would pick.

4 STARS! A sexy and at times fun read, I loved Pride Mates. I totally fell for Liam (One word: Irish *melts*) , as well as his dad, brother, and nephew. And I know that there will be other Shifters that catch my eye as the series unfolds! I will definitely be coming back for more from Jennifer Ashley.

Shifter-a-Thon-Read-a-Long!

Currently on hiatus. I'm not sure when I'll have the time to return to this project.

You've heard me talking about it for a while, and now it's finally here!

Wickedly Delicious and I are hosting a new group, Shifter-a-Thon-Read-a-Long, for fans of, what else, shifter romances! Come join the fun! :)

Here is the link to the GoodReads group for it:
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/98550-shifter-a-thon-read-a-long

This is where all the polls, discussions, etc, will take place. Help spread the word and invite other shifter fans. The more the merrier!

Now, WD and I already picked the book for this month (April). On April 28th we'll be discussing PRIDE MATES by Jennifer Ashley on the group page, so mark your calendars and get to reading!

Don't have time to read this one, or you're not interested? No problem! You can pick and choose which months you would like to participate! But if you want to help pick the next book, you have to join the group and vote, so why not head on over and join now!

I'll be posting my review of the book on May 2nd, and WD will be posting hers May 1st. You are more than welcome to post a review (GR, blog, Amazon, BN, etc), but it is not required.

We're trying to decide on May's book right now. Join the group, go to the "What Book Next? -- May 2013" post and submit up to 2 titles that you'd like to read. You have until April 25th to do this! Then the top 5 most common titles will be put in the May poll, and you'll get a chance to vote! May's book will be announced May 1st, and the discussion will be planned for the end of the month (exact date TBA).

Have I convinced you to come join the fun yet? :) Come on, you know you want to! Who can say no to a sexy shifter? And since Wickedly Delicious and I will be part of the group, you know that some slightly inappropriate, but fun discussions will be held! :D

Enjoy!

[ARC Review]: "Demon's Curse"

Demon's Curse by Alexa Egan
Publisher: Pocket Books (December 26, 2012)
Series: Imnada Brotherhood, 1
Genre: Paranormal Romance (Historical)

A fast-paced and captivating debut—the first in the dark and sexy Imnada Brotherhood series about shape shifters in Regency-era England.

A rising star on the Covent Garden stage, Bianca Parrino believes she has everything she wants. Independence. Wealth. And a life finally free of her violent, abusive husband. But when her close friend, Adam, is murdered, and Bianca is suspected in his death, she is unwittingly drawn into the search for his killer, and soon must question everything she believes—about her friend, about herself, and about a world she never knew existed.

A member of the mysterious race of shape-shifting Imnada and part of an elite military unit, Captain Mac Flannery gathered intelligence during the Napoleonic wars. As a result of a savage massacre, Mac and the men he served with are cursed. Now one of them has been found murdered, and Mac suspects the existence of the Imnada has been discovered at last. His only link to unearthing the truth is the beautiful actress who turns up unexpectedly at Adam’s funeral.

Before long, Mac has more to contend with than Bianca’s overt mistrust, his ill-fated attraction to the haughty and beautiful actress, and his ongoing search for an end to the curse. Because Adam’s killer is back, and Mac is next on his list.

My Review:

Reviewer's Note: Writing a review is never easy, but the worst review to write is for a book that was simply “ok”. But, as both a reviewer and a reader, I must be honest. Here, then, is my honest review of Demon's Curse.

Shifters. Magic. England in the 1800s. Yes, please!

I was excited when I first saw the cover for Demon's Curse earlier this year. When I was lucky enough to win an ARC from the author a few months ago, I literally did a little happy dance.

But after actually reading the book, I found myself...disappointed.

It's not that Demon's Curse was a bad book. No, it was good. But it wasn't quite as great as I had built it up to be in my mind.

The main flaw in the book was the lack of character development and world-building; I was left wanting more! I wanted more from Bianca and Mac. I wanted more about the Imnada and the Fey-blood. In short, really, I just wanted more.

What really got to me though was Bianca. Long before the book began, Bianca was married, but her marriage was anything but great. From what little is said, it appears that he was abusive and simply used her. She mentions, ONCE, that she finally killed him, though no one ever suspected her. And then it's never brought up again. Not once!

And even worse, she still suffers from the demons of her past, has a hard time trusting men, and never takes a lover. Until Mac comes along, and suddenly one roll in the bed with him and she's cured of her personal demons. No talking it out, no explaining her fears to him, nothing. She simply goes from flinching when he tries to kiss her to suddenly forgetting about her dead husband's abusive nature.

These two things pissed me off. Really? That's just not right, nor believable, and honestly I had a hard time liking Bianca. Perhaps if there had been more of her character shown to us my thoughts would be different.

However, despite my problems with the characters and world-building, I still liked the story, and I felt that Alexa Egan's writing style was actually pretty good, and I will be coming back for her future books. I really liked the idea behind the book, and even though it wasn't a “wow” book for me, I still enjoyed the journey and I am glad that I had the chance to try this new author!

Favorite Quote:

Her hands unconsciously curled into Mac's fur, her tears falling upon his face as grief spiked painful and bitter against her heart. “Can you change back Can you be . . . be Mac? I need . . . I need arms round me right now. I need to know this will turn out alright.”

Gods, Bianca. If I could do this for you, I would in half a heartbeat. But I cannot. This, you see, is my curse.

3 STARS! Alexa Egan's debut may only tell us the bare minimum about the Imnada and Fey-blood world she has created, but I am sure that future books in the series will truly make the world come alive. For shifter fans who want to try something new, especially one set in a historical setting, pick up Demon's Curse!

[Blog Tour Review]: "Broods of Fenrir"

Broods of Fenrir by Coral Moore
Publisher: Bared Teeth Publishing (November 19, 2011)

Genre: Urban Fantasy

Shapeshifter Brand Geirson was raised to rule the Broods of Fenrir, but he refused his birthright. Instead, he killed their brutal leader–his own father–and walked away.

For hundreds of years he’s avoided brood society, until a werewolf kills an innocent human woman and Brand finds himself dragged back into the violent politics of the shapeshifters. When the two brood women who mean the most to him come under threat, he must take up the throne and risk becoming the kind of vicious bastard his father was, or let the broods descend further into chaos–taking the friend he swore to protect and his lover with them.

My Review:

I am a huge fan of fantasy in any shape, but especially when it comes to shifters. I can honestly say it's been a while since I came across one that made me excited for the genre again. Broods of Fenrir did just that, and I couldn't put it down! Now, this may sound cliched, but coming from me, it's not. Lately I've been picking up and putting down books like crazy because not many have held my interest.

This one did and then some!

Brand can be the King of the broods...if only he can step forward and take the crown. His sire, the previous king, was a viscous bastard of the worst degree. When Brand finally broke free of his father and killed him, he walked away from the throne, vowing never to take the position. Now, centuries later, he finally realizes that by turning his back on the throne, he turned his back on his people. Can he fix the clans, who are stuck in the past and treating women and weak members as slaves, or will he die trying?

I truly loved this book. The writing pulled me in from the very start. There's just something about Coral Moore's writing—it flows very easily, and makes the reader wish to continue. I'm definitely adding her books to my list in the future!

Brand's tale does have a bit of romance to it, but it doesn't take center stage all the time, and I was okay with that. I loved his possessiveness, not just to Dagny, but everyone under his protection. He could have easily been like his father, drunk on power but with no honor. Instead he became very much the perfect hero.

4 STARS! For a captivating shifter tale, one that pulls from old Norse tales a bit, Broods of Fenrir is sure to be a hit with fans of the genre! I will be recommending it to others, and I am anxious to read book two ,as I'm hoping many of the secondary characters pop up again, or better yet get their own tale!

[NOR Review]: "Master of Darkness"

Master of Darkness by Angela Knight
Publisher: Berkley (August 7, 2012)
Series: The Mageverse, 9
Genre: Paranormal Romance

In the final book of New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight's Mageverse, two werewolves must save humanity from a madman, despite their mutual distrust--and growing passion...

Miranda Drake is the daughter of Warlock, a werewolf sorcerer and sworn enemy of King Arthur. Like her father, she's a werewolf with magical abilities, but after years of abuse from the Alphas in her family, she is determined to stop Warlock from spreading his poison throughout the werewolf population.

Born to a long line of cops, William Justice thinks that protecting Miranda is his chance to redeem himself for not being able to stop Warlock's manipulation of the werewolves into war. But despite Justice's insistence, Miranda has no interest in trusting another dominant Alpha, even if the sexual tension between them is enough to set her aflame.

As Warlock rallies his forces and sets out to destroy Avalon, Miranda and Justice will need to learn how to trust each other--before the spark between them dies along with all of Magekind...

My Review:

Years ago, Angela Knight created the Mageverse series. Now, after 8 books, it all ends in Master of Darkness. Any fan of this series will be sad to see it end, but happy with the way it turned out. Knight has done it yet again, creating one hell of a sexy novel, one with a fantastic storyline, a magical world (or two) and great characters!

I loved everything about Master of Darkness! I've been a devoted fan since book one, and I look forward to rereading this entire series for years to come—a sure sign of an amazing author!

If you have yet to enter Knight's Mageverse world, you don't know what you are missing! This series is a must read—sexy, unique, any fantasy lover's dream! However, I must warn that this is a series that needs to be read in order; so if you decided to start these books—and you should!—start from the beginning and work your way up to Master of Darkness. You won't regret it!

When your father is Warlock, the evil sorcerer trying to destroy the entire Mageverse world, life is anything but easy. Miranda's been tortured by him her whole life, and at the age of four he even put a spell on here which limits her magic and makes her fear him (and any other Alpha Males). She's nothing like Warlock though, and she wants only to kill him before he finally destroys everything she loves—and then kills her.

Justice may be a Dire Wolf now, but he's still a cop at heart—protecting the innocent no matter what. Miranda has become his life, the one woman he wants to create a Spirit Link with, and he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Can he save her, defeat Warlock, and come to terms with his new powers—before they kill him?

Master of Darkness may be the finale for this series, but I see a spinoff series starting (soon, I hope!). Angela Knight is a very talented author, and I look forward to her future books, regardless of the series they belong to!

I can't tell you enough how much I love this series--it's just so well done, so sexy, and so different from others out there. King Arthur legends, vampires and shapeshifters--yum! If you have not tried this series yet, what are you waiting for? Start with book one though--it's better when read in order!

Enjoy!

[Review]: "Just One Drop"

Just One Drop by Quinn Loftis
Series: The Grey Wolves, 3
Genre: YA Paranormal
Jennifer Adams, best friend to Jacque Pierce and Sally Morgan, spicy, out spoken, a little crazy and human...or so she thought. Jen has just found out that human DNA is not the only thing that resides in her veins, she happens to share that little pesky werewolf gene, although it isn't more than just a drop. Now that she and her friends are living in Romania with Fane's pack, she is also oh so conveniently stuck with the object of her affection, the fur ball Decebel. Drawn to each other by something they don't understand Jen finds herself frustrated by the lack of mating signs between her and said fur ball. Not only is she dealing with that not so un-frustrating problem, she now has been informed that because of that little drop of werewolf blood in her she is now required to attended a multi-pack gathering for un-mated wolves. This type of gathering hasn't taken place in over a century but with a shortage of females among the werewolf population the males are getting worried they won't ever find their true mates.
Meanwhile Decebel struggles with the emotions he is feeling towards Jen. He tries to keep his distance but there is just something about the mouthy blonde that keeps him coming back for more of her verbal abuse that he just can't seem to get enough of...go figure.

My Review:

While this series has improved greatly with each book, Just One Drop is my favorite by far!

I loved how Jen's stubborn, wild, and witty side came out in this book. I also loved the banter between Decebel and Jen, especially the sexy build up between them. Even though this is a YA series, it is not for the younger teens, yet man fans of adult romances will also find this book to their liking.

The only real complain I have is this: I did find that the ending was far too rushed and felt incomplete. By the last page I was frustrated. However, Quinn did her job well—I'm anxious to read book four! :)

4.5 STARS! Full of witty remarks, a funny cheer or two (trust me, if you read it you will know what I'm talking about!), and enough sexy Alpha males to make any shifter fan extremely happy, Just One Drop is a must read! I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series, and I'm glad that despite my doubts with book 1 I stuck with it. This book reminded me of why I love trying new authors—you just never know what you'll find!
